GTA IV has become the most lucrative entertainment launch of all time – dwarfing best-ever releases in music, video and literature.

Take Two has confirmed that GTA IV sold six million units globally in its first week – with an estimated retail value of more than $500 million.

The title sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.

The previous biggest entertainment launch week was that of cinema blockbuster Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007), which took $404 million at the Box Office.

"We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two.

“Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level."

"Rockstar's goal is to make each new title in the Grand Theft Auto franchise even better than those that preceded it, and Grand Theft Auto IV is a smashing success on that score,” said Ben Feder, Take-Two's Chief Executive Officer.

“Grand Theft Auto IV makes full use of the power of next generation technology, and offers players an experience unique in the interactive entertainment medium. This game sets a new standard in the industry, with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece."
Wow. Whoda thunk it? Of course, GTAIV is receiving the usual critic rebuttals - MADD, Jack Thompson and whatnot, but all in all, they're selling through the roof. I mean, I wonder if Jack Thompson realized that him fighting against Rockstar in a bid to oust GTA from the shelves contributed to their sales; Thompson is a hated figure in the gaming industry - his biggest opponent? Rockstar. Rockstar's biggest game? GTA. So buying GTA is like some weird form of sticking it to Jack Thompson. I wonder if they'll give him a royalty cheque.

I don't think Jack Thompson has drawn attention to anything and I don't think anyone's heard of him outside the internet game-o-sphere.

Damn though, I didn't think GTA IV would be that successful.

FOX News and everyone who subscribes to his beliefs; those people probably aren't very likely to spite-buy GTA IV.

On a sidenote, let's have this as the official all-purpose GTA IV thread. I would like to contribute that I do not own an X-BOX 360 and you can all go and die somewhere.

Is comparing a video game's opening weekend to a movie's opening weekend even advisable? I mean, GTA4 costs $60, the special edition costs $90... going to a movie? 10-15 dollars if you can't get a student discount or you don't go to a matinee.

GTA IV is the new Smash Bros. (in the sense that there are bajillion threads of it).

Sticky this thread and never take it down.

Yeah, comparing it a movie is a bit off, since to get 400 million dollars, at an average of 10 dollars a ticket, 40 million people went to see the movie (if DVD sales aren't factored into the overall amount made). To get 500 million dollars, only about 8 million, 300 thousand people had to buy the game. It does show that you can make a GIGANTIC amount of money if you can sell 40 million copies of a video game, though, so I can see people investing in the video game industry now...

Why, thank you, Captain obvious!

that what i said was sarcasm, all the cool kids are doing it...

still dosent change the irony that Thompson did an amazing job on promoting GTA 4, and i really doubt it would be such a big of a bang if he had kept his mouth shut
