Favorite DnD Character

So, 2008 looks like it's shaping up to be a historical one as far a Dungeons and Dragons is concerned, that is with the passing of Gary Gygax and the release of 4th edition. I thought it might be nice to a classic thread question almost in honor of the favored pastime of many rogues, rapscallions, and raconteurs...

What was your favorite DnD character you have ever played and why?

Personally, though a tough decision, mine was a Rogue/ Fighter/ Invisible blade by the name of "Maxwell Tree" with a penchant for lies, deception, trickery and all around thievery. When I started playing him, he was NE, but he slowly made is way to chaotic neutral through a soft spot for women and children. This lead to a climatic battle with his longtime associate Armand Roth (LE Sorcerer). Also, he had a thick cockney accent. In a lot of ways he was a classic DnD character, but I loved him none the less.

Gleaver the gnome barbarian. Big (for me) hammer. Raging badass with 20 Con.

I was four feet tall and fucking invincible.

I humbly submit...The Dog.

Not just a dog...but The Dog.

It started years and years ago, when my DM was running the party as a hunting group that would seal their wares at festivals and the like, and participate in tournaments and such. It was different from the normal "SAVE THE WORLD!!!" campaign, but loads of fun.

Anyways, my character in the party was a fighter. Long story short, the party got hired to take care of some trolls, and a few bad rolls later, my fighter was dead.

However, this particular fighter also owned a war dog. On a whim, and to do something just funny, I asked if I could roll up the dog as a character. The DM agreed. Oddly enough, the dog became one of the more skilled close in fighters in the group, so when things got hairy, they would "release the dog".

Anyways, after awhile, that party fell by the wayside, and a new campaign started, but I had grown attached to the dog, so I asked if I could carry it over somehow. Again, the DM agreed.

Now, it should be known...if it isn't obvious by this point...that we played by a fairly loose set of house rules, and are very definately power gamers.

So, eventually, after playing the dog for a few years, it basically became an immortal being with a breath weapon that would put a dragon to shame. I don't get to play as a straight up character anymore, but it pops up from time to time...usually when the current party needs to break into a fortress or something.

I had a half elf fighter that specialize in fighting with a magical animated knotted silk rope. He was a man hunter who refused to kill his targets.

His Use Rope skill was so high he could trip you, run up and bind you with a complicated knot all with one hand. Its also very satisfying to beat a barbarian senseless with a knot on the end of a rope. Plus, I killed a fucking minotaur with a grappling hook.

Of course, we had a special house rule in play that I got a +1 to dmg and attack rolls for every 4 ranks of my use rope skill.

I hope he had a cowboy hat.

EVILNess 05-12-2008 02:06 AM

Actually he had a bowler. The campaign was entirely urban.

EDIT: However, if I ever get a chance to remake him I will so wear a goddamn cowboy hat.

Mirai Gen 05-12-2008 02:12 AM

I should hope so.

You've got Use Rope skill causing damage and tripping opponents. He's a goddamn cowboy and I will not live in a world where cowboys don't wear cowboy hats.

EVILNess 05-12-2008 02:24 AM

Okay, duly noted and sigging.

Still, its fun as hell to play if you can set it up right. Of course there are more efficient ways to take down an opponent. IE anything that isn't rope.

EDIT: YAY! I found him! Here is a quick view of him.

Half Elf 8 Fighter/ 1 Exemplar
Str 14
Dex 18
Con 12
Wis 10
Int 14
Cha 15

Equipment
Animated Silk Rope
Chain Shirt
Bracers of Armor +2
Ring of Haste (2 Time per Day)

Feats
Class Skill: Use Rope (We have a house rule that you can trade a feat to make a skill not cross class.)
Improved Trip
Weapon Finesse (Rope)
Improved Disarm
Mobility
Dodge
Spring Attack
Weapon Focus (Rope)
Skill Focus (Use Rope)

My Use Rope skill had 12 Ranks + 4 dex mod + 2 from using a silk rope + 2 for having it animated and +3 for Skill Focus. Not to mention the Skill Artistry I get from being a level 1 exemplar, giving me a +27 on my use rope checks. Thats +6 on my attack and damage rolls. In hind sight I would probably be human instead of half elf, picking up Deft Hands with my bonus feat, bringing my Use Rope to +29.

Easily Faustus Geisteskrank, CE Human Wizard with necro spec.

Traumatized over the sudden illness and death of his lover, he became immersed in the family tradition of wizardry to bring her back. However, his subconsious tried to help him cope with his loss by making him believe that his lover was not dead, only very very ill. So ill that he had to carry her in a specially made case. He also began worshipping Nerull, with the belief that sacrifices in his name would make her well again. His necromantic skills would be second to none, and he had a small army at his command, with his father's skeleton horse, his familiar raven, an ogre zombie called 'Tiny', and the ability to summon several undead minions as well. He also used Magic Missile often, but never with his own spellcasting: He bought magic missile wands.

Now, here was the best part of playing Geisteskrank. He didn't just think his darling was sick. She 'talked' to him. Constantly. And he absolutely refused to believe anyone who tried to tell him that she wasn't alive and speaking to him. He would often do things because 'Darling said so'. He was also insanely paranoid about people learning the magics that he 'developed' himself (basically spells from other sourcebooks given names like Geisteskrank's Flames), writing his spellbook in the Yuan Ti language. He even had his raven speak the language instead of Common.

My friend John's favorite was easily Raspute.

He was a wizard whom, at age sixteen, was already practicing magic. One day he killed and reanimated the family dog, and the father was amazed at the sudden level of obedience the dog was displaying.

That is until some of it's flesh started to fall off and flies began to gather.

That was pretty much his whole backstory but I still like it.
