I may or may not be correct, but you could possibly be....misinterpreting the tone of their comments. Not being a frequent visitor to Something Awful, simply because I find alot of their material very lewd rather than racist, I've notice a general trend on the internet to kinda poke fun at Japanese culture, something I believe spawned from an extreme interest in Japanese culture (video games, manga, anime) and from there went to websites like engrish.com, and it just kinda escalated higher and higher. So while not necessarily racist, I think that Something Awful might simply be in bad taste.

I don't take them very seriously, becasue I don't think you can take sites like that very seriously, unless you like to send them hate mail about things like that. (Read the hate mail on real ultimate power and you'll see what I mean.)

uh ... what?
Never heard of this website. Anyone care to link?

What entries did you find racist, and why? So far as I can see, the only thing to do with the Japanese at all in the contest was that one of the categories was "kill an anime character in a really nasty/funny way". If that's racist, does that make the people who went on about killing the Teletubbies back in the day prejudiced against the English?
Here's a link to the top-ranking contest entries, for the curious: http://www.somethingawful.com/ (My favorite is #2. Rowr!) |
The fun part about that site is the area where you can read the lawsuits they have against themselves and the reasons why they are sued

oh man, that GI song is sweet.
mash - fitting that your favorite, #2, was drawn by a girl, and even more fitting is her prize. |
I love something awful. I'm a goon, so I've taken part in message board raids and achived websites. Nothing is better then shutting down a pedophile website.
Ha ha, some of these are really good. Good show. #5 is my favorite. |
ah
Oh that place. I've seen it before. Its funny at times, but i avoid it becuase they're just way to lewd for me... plus some of their supposed sponsers....

How does the image itself -- without the SA poster's commentary, which seems to me to be clearly a joke and in any case isn't actually a direct quote from the artist -- imply that the artist hates the entirety of Japanese culture? To me it was a very striking piece of visual criticism of Japanese cultural attitudes towards women as sex objects, using the Nazi uniform-clad zombie as a "memento mori" of the war crimes against women committed by the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII, which in the case of the "comfort women" eerily echoed those committed by their German allies. The piece asks the viewer: how much has really changed since then? It might be a little juvenile in its obviousness, but even so, I think it was kind of wasted on something as fun and intentionally dumb as a SomethingAwful contest.
It's possible to be very critical of certain aspects of a culture and its history without necessarily being prejudiced against it as a whole, which I really think was not the artist's intent at all. I'd sure be interested in hearing from him or her on the subject, though. |
