Shonen Manga
I have been on a shonen manga kick for the last week, and I must ask... Why is there always a tournament?
Also, I really like Fairy Tail. Its a fun little manga, even if I feel like I have read this all before. |

Tournaments are easy to write and keep the same settings and characters around for fifty chapters, so they're easy to draw.

Also, yes Fairy Tail is awesome. It's probably my favourite of the newer ones. Edit: Wow new Bleach had some crazy crap in it. Tessai was a Captain, fat vizard was his VC. Also it appears Kyoraku has a glasses fetish. Lisa was his ex-VC. |
Because testing manliness in a competitive manner is always cool and shit.
But yeah, it is an overtly used cliché. Though I don't read One Piece or Bleach, so I'm kinda wondering whether those use tournaments. I've never heard about something like that in them. |

Second, there is not a tournament in either, so far. (Unless you count the Davy Back Fight in OP, which I don't.) But honestly Tournaments are so over used... Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter X Hunter, 666 Satan, Flame of Recca, and Naruto. Those are all series that have significant portions of their story take place during a tournament. |

Actually there are 499 chapters of One Piece, but you are talking like you have to read them all in one sitting.
You don't you know. :D |
Fuck it I like my stories to have an end somewhere in the horizon.

Flame of Recca was a tournament. Every arc was set up as one and it was dumb. The characters were great, and none of the heroes overpowered the others, but it was still 1 giant tournament.
