Merchant or otherwise armed ships (thus, also mercenaries).
Otherwise armed ships may consist of an army fleet, or as mentioned, mercenaries.

They would also have times where they fought on land.

But... I can only think of Spanish captains wearing armour. And even then I'm not certain what I'm saying is right.

Hey, YOU brought it up, asking for a logical explanation for why Cervantes would wear armour.
I am fully aware of the fact that clothing conventions in videogames is like the eager, but underage, boy standing outside the local stripclub.

He knows what's going on, but sadly, he's not allowed in.

I just said it didn't make any sense. Like they had a hat with all the suggestions for his second outift and then picked up "plate armor" and went with it. There should be ANOTHER pirate outfit, instead. With a huge hat or something.

All characters can "armour" break. "Armour" as in pieces of clothing that do not resemble armours at all.

Ivy has always had "magic" too.

So, what will Taki wear after getting hit? Seriously.

And after playing SC2 and SC3 I'm pretty sure I never saw Ivy have a magic circle ( with geometrical power! ) that shoots lightning. Oh sure she has her amazing power of making her whipsword turn with some moves ( like one of her SC3 moves that has the whip extend and do a /\ ) but not magic bolts.
