Annual Video Game Music thread

So I never realized until now how totally great the Tenchu: Stealth Assassins OST is. Pretty amazing traditional japanese music, and the percussions are fantastic.

Brawl has an amazing soundtrack - I opt that we just all agree to that and not bring it up in the thread unless you're talking about some specific game or song within.

On that tangent, Star Fox has a pretty awesome soundtrack too. Assault didn't wow me with much but the music certainly did it, and obligatory link to the Star Wolf Team's theme song herein. Makes me sad there's no new Star Fox material that doesn't deepthroat these days.

Discuss.

I'm not one for video game music in general, but The Devil May Cry series has some pretty awesome music.

Seriously.

In the course of my completely legitimately rediscovering and playing old games I never had a chance to play before, I've discovered that the music to the NES game Faxanadu is actually quite catchy. Which is good because some other aspects of it, like combat and leveling/passwords, are kind of frustrating.

Also, the Final Fantasy games (yes, even Mystic Quest. In fact, the music's probably the only really good not-shit thing about FF:Mystic Quest) and Chrono Trigger. (I seem to recall it's a rule somewhere that threads like these have to mention Chrono Trigger.) Also also, the Phantasy Star games, particularly IV. Oh, and Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma, and really any Legend of Zelda game.

Pages upon pages could be filled with Final Fantasy alone, I move it likewise be categorized with SSBB as "terrific".

Xenosaga has great music, as does SoulCaliber 2. Drakengard 2's Learning to Fly is hauntingly beautiful and reminds me of Voices from Macross Plus. Also, I've got a soft spot for the music from Killer Instinct, which I still consider one of the most underrated fighting games ever made.

Every single time one of these threads comes out I mention the same thing -Kumi Tanioka, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Best Final Fantasy soundtrack ever? (Hint: Fuck yes!)

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Motherfuckin' Dragon Roost Island for the epic win!!

One soundtrack I'm really enjoying right now is the one for It's a Wonderful World. I haven't listened to the Western version (The World Ends With You), but I hope they didn't change it too much just because of the implied sex in the lyrics. It's not as if kids are going to be playing this game, right?

I second Brawl. It's the Soundtrack of the Forever.

Super Mario Galaxy's music is BEAUTIFUL. You don't believe me? You suck.

I'll also give a shoutout to Shadow of the Colossus. One of the few games in which I believe all of its elements form an almost perfect work of art.

That's it for now.

PAINKILLER. Yes, the 4 year old game that Yahtzee just reviewed. Awesome FPS, even now, and with an amazing soundtrack to boot.

Also, Zero Hour has some pretty cool songs too. GLA comes to mind, but USA has some pretty cool tunes too. Don't play China that much though.

And of course, this.

Ninja PS: And this too, though it's not video game OST per se.

Bomberman 64: TSA has some pretty excellent music. Unfortunately I'm having difficulty locating ISOLATED samples of it, so... here.

[EDIT] RT, you failed to mention Mt. Kilanda in your FF:CC music collection. I'm disappointed.

I could show you my master list again, but I won't. Instead, I'll list the latest entry in my "games with great soundtracks" master list.

That game is Xenogears.

Holy snikeys, the music in that game is powerful! I love it!

Normally it was just okay for me, until that E3 trailer for Devil May Cry 3.

Shawn McPherson is an amazing musical artist.

I think that SotC is a perfect example of a game not needing much mechanics in favor of epic camerawork, concept art, and music supplementing the game. I don't think that it would have been the same without those things making it feel like much more.
