S. Darko

Did the hair on the back of your neck tingle when you read the title?

Did you immediately hit Google, Wikipedia and IMDb to check on it?

Then you're probably one of the many fans who go deep space cowboy over Donnie Darko, the mysterious, mesmerizing, multiple-meaning-layered, masterfully thought out movie of the decade to feature plane crash shenanigans released one week before september 9 2001.

And yeah, they're making a sequel. Completely not endorsed by the creator of the original, so it might go the same way as Terminator 3, and nevertheless a certain attitude of let's-ignore-everything-in-it-that-doesn't-relate-to-the-original-in-a-way-I-like will probably be required of the viewer. But it might be cool.

Samantha Darko, now 18, is compelled by Frank, the giant bunny rabbit, to go on a road trip to Los Angeles. Hilarity/drama/hallucinations/refractional reality ensues.

I don't know. I don't want to know what moves are about until I sit down to see them. But I always have a good sense of how I'll enjoy a movie; 90% reliable. And I think I'll enjoy this one enormously. Just a heads-up.

PS: A funny story. I read an ad for Donnie Darko in a Brittish videogame magazine. I remember it had a picture of Donnie and Frank sitting in a movie theater, overlayed with the close-up of Frank's mask, and some tagline about a "dark world" or something. The weird part is, while I rarely remember when things happened, I remember exactly where I read this, and it was in a house I lived in between 1992 and 1998. And the movie came out in 2001.

I am definitely assuming it will be a horrible tragedy, but I can imagine myself being wrong.
I suppose the concept of the plot seems fine and all, and like any movie it could be good or it could suck, but there is a very deep sense of "do not want" with this one.

This is utter bullshit. The plot sounds forced already. Frank's an established visual, and someone wants to cash in on that, that's all.

Solid Snake 06-30-2008 03:30 AM

Yeah, Frank as the identity of the bunny really worked phenomenally for spoilerific reasons in Donnie Darko but I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how they're going to connect him to Samantha in a way that actually seems remotely viable.

One word:

Ugh.

Masked Jedi 06-30-2008 10:41 AM

About once a month, I am reminded that this movie will exist. And my reaction is somewhat unpleasant. That means I shout FUCK! at the top of my lungs and swear revenge.

Okay people, listen up. Richard Kelly is Donnie Darko. That man is a genius. Want more proof? Go watch Domino or Southland Tales. Anything Darko-related without him doesn't work. It had a clear-cut ending, and everything. Come on!

Also, it's not the same actor playing Frank. IMDB says that it's the little fucker who's gonna play Goku in the live-action Dragonball movie.

So, I will not see this movie. I might just boycott it. Or I'll just stay home and watch the original, Southland Tales, or The Box, if it's out on DVD at that point.

Roy_D_Mylote 06-30-2008 10:56 PM

There is no Frank! Donnie changes time, doesn't kill Frank the boyfriend, there is no Frank the bunny. What the fuck.

Odjn 06-30-2008 11:04 PM

So wait

Hollywood's taking a title with some cleverness and wit to it and wringing it completely dry for the sake of making some cash, and I'm supposed to be surprised?

Harpell 07-01-2008 12:29 AM

NO.

Fuck you whoever thought this was a good idea to make. I see nothing but badness coming from this.

Also, what Roy said! Come on, how the hell are they going to justify this?

Amake 07-01-2008 12:50 AM

A bad sequel doesn't equal a bad movie. Like I said, you just have to ignore that which relates to the original in a way you don't like. At worst, it might not add anything to Donnie Darko. At best, might cast cast Donnie and the events of the first film in a new light from the perspective of his little sister.

Yeah, I'm a total fan, and I know how sequels usually work out, but I'm hopeful.

Meister 07-01-2008 01:36 AM

I'm already fully prepared to ignore this movie entirely, I think that works out to us being on the same page.
