And now I remember why I liked Starcraft
I finally reinstalled this game after 2 years of really not playing it at all, because I wanted something new to play and had nothing. I think it took about 15 minutes for the computer to Zealot rush and rape me, so I promptly restarted and got raped by Zerglings in roughly the same time frame. This made me smile with glee, because I remember the variations in both Battlenet strategy and vsCPU strategy being the main reason I enjoyed the game so much.
I would like to know how some of the people on Battlenet get so goddamn good; I mean, I'm pretty mediocre at the game, so that's a contributing factor, but jesus christ are some of these people fast if you watch the replays. It's bananas. Any other love for this game on here or am I the only one who constantly revisits classic games. |
I like it, but the skill level of the pro communities is just daunting. Check out www.starcraft.org for the bestest replays ever; stuff to make you prefer watching instead of trying to play. :)

I never did like playing meelee maps that much. Mostly because of the pro players who just kill you while shoving insults down your throat. I do however, still love a good UMS map with my friends. Nothing beats a good zombie map or RP on Starcraft.

Those Koreans are fucking nasty. |

I mean seriously though, it's mental how good they are at that game. And how much they get paid and how popular they are in Korea. I mean here, you're like exiled if you spend that much time playing Starcraft. In Korea? They'd laugh if you told them that's how SC players are viewed. |
I remember watching some replays and it was nuts.
But I remember seeing some crazy things. Like this one guy was totally dominant, his base was bigger, he had more troops, more resources everything. He was playing Protoss and the other guy Terran. The terran had laid down some spider mines and the Protoss player hit them with those big spider like things that contain dead bodies. He lost two of those units and thought his strategy was lost and instantely conceded when it appeared to me he was still totally dominant. Are games so knife-edged that losing two troops to a randomly placed mined is the difference between victory and defeat? |
I've always found WC3 maps and replays more interesting. The heroes really add another dimension to gameplay, and the units themselves are... more entertaining.
To wit: Troll Batriders, Pandaren Brewmaster, and the Tinker. |
I have to say that I really never enjoyed the Heroes from WCIII. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned but I don't care about distinction when I'm playing an RTS, I'm playing it to make an army and go boom. Obviously campaigns are different because you need static characters for any kind of coherent plot, but in terms of general play.
You've also got to remember that there's a moderate (relatively speaking) age gap between SC and WCIII. |
The best thing about Starcraft and WC3 are custom maps. I finally tracked down my favorite Starcraft custom map - Kill That Zerg! but I can't play it 'cos I lost my starcraft cd keys.

I loved Starcraft, but I never took any time to develop skill to it. I have and always will be, a Red Alert, Warcraft/Diablo fan since the first games in those series (yes, I actually had Warcraft 1 when it came out). So when we got Diablo 2, Red Alert 2 (a letdown, IMO), and Warcraft 3, those replaced Starcraft. It was also around this time I got a PS2. Besides, I prefer a RTS that employs Less Units/More Customization vs. More Units/Quicker Gameplay. SC being the epitomy of the latter, while WC3 is a fine example fo the former.
