FEAR - Is It Any Good?

Yes, I know it's been out forever. But I have a really crappy computer (read: really crappy) and other such excuses. Being a fan of other survival-horror games, and seeing a few trailers for the PS3 version, I have to ask; what did you guys think about it?

Its a pretty average shooter, so I guess it would depend on two things:

1. Do you really like Shooters?

2. Do you jump like a little girl at scary things?

Even when you know it's coming, it's still creepy.

I love its immersion.
I love its creepiness.
I don't mind the overused bullet time ability.
I enjoy not being comfortable playing this game alone in the dark.

Oh please. This not a scary game at all.

Yeah, it can suprise you. But that's not horror, that's just shock.

I LAUGH at some of the 'horror' parts. Seriously laughing out loud.

That being said, I liked it. Definately reccomend.

EDIT- Now, when Eternal Darkness pretends to erase your memory card? THAT's horror.

I would say get it. It's not the best shooter, it's not the best at scaring you, but it does pretty damn good in both regards.

The only downside I felt is that the environments and enemies get a little stale, but that's something you get over considering your enemies can be quite smart sometimes.

Shooters are alright, as long as there's a relatively good plot involved. And with shooters, I know that I'm asking a lot there.

Being a Silent Hill veteran has kinda dulled the little girl scariness sense.

So kinda Doom 3-ish bodies falling from the ceilings?

Well... Half-Life, the original. You know how when you're about to go to the test chamber, and one of the computer panels suddenly explodes?

Like that.

I liked it. There are a few really good, memorable moments like when you turn around on the ladder and Alma is staring at you right in front of your face or when you glance back at Alice and see Alma standing in the elevator with her before the doors close and the lights go out again.

It gets pretty repetative and even though they threw in a small collection of different enemy types, you never fight more than one kind of enemy at a time, which is a little odd. The pacing is also extremely predictable Shoot Shoot Shoot Calm Scare Shoot Shoot Shoot Calm Scare etc.

But yeah I'd say go for it I guess.

A game as old as FEAR is always worth the ten or twenty bucks, because even if it's bad it's still cheap.

Seil 07-09-2008 11:39 PM

I'm talking about the $40-odd PS3 port.
