Recommend me an Anime
I'm looking for something to watch. Anything decently fighty-actioney, with a preference for guns & swords actioney as opposed to giant robots actioney. Doesn't have to be deep as long as it isn't too actively stupid. If you recommend me anything with the word "panic" in it I will fucking end you.
EDIT: As a guide, stuff I like includes Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, and Samurai 7. Also Afro Samurai if we count that as anime which I do. Also Bleach and Air Gear so I'm not clinging too hard to any pretense of dignity here. I really liked Gantz except for that one part which made me want to kill myself which is to say the part that was the entire thing. I guess I keep hearing you guys mention something called Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, so I'll look into that? |
Hmm... What to suggest. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Since you specifically asked for guns or swords then maybe you should pick up Claymore (Swords) or possibly Wild Arms TV (Guns). Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Witchblade, Devil May Cry, or Hellsing might also be up your alley if you lean towards more of an occult feel. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Black Cat is also pretty good. Its got guns, a attache case multi-tool, and transforming little girls who were bred to be assassins. Have you seen Black Lagoon? Its good too, and Gantz has ots of action. Even if it is depressing as hell. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann |
Gurren Lagan is giant robots. Now, watch Gad Guard. The robots are not giant (10-ish feet tall), and several have guns. Its also fucking awesome and shit, but not all pretentious and deep and shit.

Yeah, Black Lagoon is delicious candy, and Gantz is delicious candy offered to you by a strange man in a white van and then he invites you into his van so you can be 'special friends'. I added a thing at the top about stuff I've seen/liked.

Outlaw Star. Action/Comedy about Space Pirates and its totally awesome. You also may or may not be able to find every dubbed episode on Youtube...

If you like all those I really recommend D. Gray Man. Excellent series with powers and such and a pretty good storyline. It's currently ongoing though so once you catch up you have the week or so wait for a new episodes. There's a sword in it that I remember but it's mostly power combat as opposed to strictly melee weapons.
For one that does have guns I recommend Gungrave. All about a undead guy who wields guns with what is actually a really moving and human backstory as to how things got this way. Does the typical anime first two episodes future then a flashback for most of the continuing episodes. Lots of character development and betrayals and a mafia. I really enjoyed it. Or if you haven't already tried it Trigun. Great series in my opinion but some people disagree. |
I recently watched History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi and really enjoyed it. Its a martial arts anime, but there are no tournaments and there is plenty of laughs.
GunGrave has guns in it, but I have never watched it, however I have heard good things. Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex might cathc your eye if you haven't already watched it. Gunslinger Girl is about cybernetically enhanced little girls who cary guns round and kill people. There really isn't any more to say. |
I second Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate being the better of the two, even though it isn't finished.
Elfen Lied has some good action, or at least gore, though it falls on its face when it tries to be funny sometimes. As a bonus, it also has what I consider a very emotional story and theme, that theme being Humans=Assholes. If you like the Devil May Cry games, or at least the first one, I'd recommend staying away from the anime. Anime was okay, but didn't have several things it should've to make it much better. Also suffers from throwing in a "cute" little girl character. I'd second D. Gray Man. Only seen a little into the anime, but the manga is really good. |
I haven't been able to catch up with a whole lot of Trigun, but the bits I was able to catch were nicely full of gunslinging and explosions, and the writing didn't insult my intelligence any more blatantly than any other anime I've seen. (Altho' the English dub on the DVD I borrowed made me want to drive an icepick into my ears--I found the quality of the voice acting downright abysmal in many cases. Or maybe I'm just being too picky, I dunno.)
The thought occurs to me, however, that you've probably seen it already. Still, it's not bad. I'm also seconding Outlaw Star; I've enjoyed what I've seen of it. |
Tengu Topper Gruel Lager or however you spell it is like Gundam except each mech has the power to destroy galaxies and generous amounts of drill analogies.
It sounds awesome but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to make RT's brain implode. |
