The Mother of All Penny Arcade Ripoff

Gaze into the abyss, and despair!

Satan's Onion 07-29-2008 04:43 AM

So it wasn't enough that he ripped off the format like a squillion other webcomic artist/writers out there. Ho no no no. He stole practically everything but Gabe's Pac-Man shirt. That's...that's kind of incredibly sad.

Also sad: the artist replies to every single comment in the threads made about each comic, at the bottom of the page. I mean, I've been known to start threads and promptly kill them by replying to everything in them too, but I have the excuse that I'm insecure and a loser and I don't have my own Penny Arcade carbon copy webcomic.

Professor Smarmiarty 07-29-2008 05:43 AM

If you're going to steal, might as well be shameless about it.

Dear lord. Even the old comics look like Old Penny arcade, except Old Penny arcade still looks better.

Well the most recent comic actually made me laugh, but I checked four others and they failed to live up to the first.

But y'know, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery or some crap. If we were all crucified for that there'd be no human race.

Maybe I'm lenient...

But I say give the guy some time to find his own pacing. He probably started as a fan of PA, and is looking for his audience.

At least he's trying.

TDK 07-29-2008 10:01 PM

Wow, PA ripoffs aside, that is the worst archive system I've ever seen.

Also: "Every living organism that has eyes needs to blink."

That's not even TRUE.

The levels of overstating the joke reach CAD-like levels.

And fourth wall breaking and author insertion. This comic breaks every rule imaginable.

"Was checking out the new vids for GTA IV when I suddenly realized "This isn't really the 4th game!""

This guy is a genius.

Edit: Okay, this actually gets kinda funny later on...

Oh I have no problem with the comic itself, because at least it takes inspiration and doesn't throw half of it away in a lousy attempt to make the reader take the main characters seriously rather than just use them as cartoon characters, fully dispensable. CAD.

But I mean, come on, you can't even begin to tell me that isn't Penny Arcade with the serial numbers filed off. It has its jokes here and there, hit and miss with a 20% batting average, and I'm going to keep my eye on it, but it wouldn't be so unintentionally hilarious if, well,

it wasn't for that.

I mean, this, right here, just busted me up:

...

I can't say anything to that one. *shakes head in dismay*

TopHatAssassin 07-30-2008 07:04 PM

Jefferson is the only redeeming quality I can find in this comic. Only his leaping onto the Cloverfield monster (and sheer curiousity) kept me around.

Otherwise, it makes me cry a little on the inside.
