FF1 Warmech! Yeah, we all think it's scary and such...

The German army was called, if I'm not mistaken, the Wermacht.

Or something very close to that.

Does one think that the Warmech was named after that, or is it more plausible that the Warmech is a "War Mech" or War Machine?

Or is this a damn stupid question?

Wermacht inspired the question, so that gets the first vote. The one from me.

I've never heard of the term War Mech. I've head of Battlemech, but now War Mech

Martyr 04-04-2004 11:23 PM

Ah, I edited the title to FF1 Warmech.

It's the only video game I can talk freely about, and I felt like posting here so...

Anyway, I was just wondering about what the origin of it is. Since everything else in FF1 and other FFs is pretty easily traced to an origin.

(Excalibur, Thor's Hammer, Tiamat? I wonder where those all came from?)

So there's something called a Warmech, and I had an idea, and I posted it.

In Babylonian myths, Tiamat is a huge, bloated female dragon that personifies the saltwater ocean, the water of Chaos. She is also the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. Her consort is Apsu, the personification of the freshwater abyss that lies beneath the Earth. From their union, saltwater with freshwater, the first pair of gods were born. They are Lachmu and Lachamu, parents of Ansar and Kisar, grandparents of Anu and Ea.

In the creation epic Enuma elish, written around 2000 BCE, their descendants started to irritate Tiamat and Apsu so they decided to kill their offspring. Ea discovered their plans and he managed to kill Apsu while the latter was asleep. Tiamat flew into a rage when she learned about Apsu's death and wanted to avenge her husband. She created an army of monstrous creatures, which was to be led by her new consort Kingu, who is also her son. Eventually, Tiamat was defeated by the young god Marduk, who was born in the deep freshwater sea.

Marduk cleaved her body in half, and from the upper half he created the sky and from the lower half he made the earth. From her water came forth the clouds and her tears became the source of the Tigris and the Euphratus. Kingu also perished, and from his blood Marduk created the first humans.

Um, those questions were sarcasm, to help influence the point of my question, if you will.

But, uh, thanks for the info, I only knew very basics about the Tiamat origin, that it was the mother.

Edit - Now that's interesting. Is it Babylonian mythology? I only hear about Norse and greek stuff. I guess you don't study that in school. I ought to look it up.

i think final fantasy 1 was more "lets see how many cliches we can crame into it and still make it a good game" so you had things like elves, dwarves, excaliber, mage, lich, pretty much any aspect of FF1 is based off of some fantasy element, with the original ideas (crystals and airships) sticking around.

so more than likely, someone said "ya know, since we are using the "ancient but advanced wiped out civilization" cliche, wouldn't it be cool if one of the enemies was a giant machine? since it attacks you we can assume it was build for war, so we'll call it a war machine. I'm typing it in now...oh dang there isn't enough space to type machine in...HEY LARRY, WHATS A GOOD SHORTENED WORD FOR MACHINE?...mech? hmmm i like that, ok then, this thing shall be called a war mech"

That's a pretty good idea, but these were the minds at Square, surely they would have tried to put some thought into it. Right?

Martyr 04-05-2004 08:52 AM

Fine. If it's that obvious, then it's that obvious.

I just had a thought and decided to throw it out there.

The Tortured one 04-05-2004 05:18 PM

I'm not putting you down, im just musing with you. :)

thats why my vote went for you to go die for a cause. Uncle sam beckons son!

Mech is just short for mechanism, which is just another word for machine. So it's a machine made for war. There's no parallel to the German army, it's just an aural coincidence.
