Final Fantasy and the GameFAQs game contest

Final Fantasy is destroying Pitfall in their round 1 match of the "Best. Game. Ever!" contest:

http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/poll/spr04.asp?poll=1604

Anyone here following this contest? I'm hoping that Final Fantasy can pull the impossible and defeat Super Mario Bros. 3 (it'll almost certainly get past Contra), but that's a big stretch.

Still, it's nice to see an outbreak of 8BT references on the GameFAQs contest discussion board.

That Final Fantasy is beating Pitfall is no surprise. I'll bet most of the voters have never even played Pitfall. Hell, I'm sure there are lots who don't even know what Pitfall is. It's like Phantasy Star vs. Contra. Phantasy Star was a Sega Master System game and as such it had no hope. Just like if you pitted Phantasy Star against Final Fantasy it would have no hope, despite the fact that Phantasy Star far more than Final Fantasy heralded the console RPG in its mature form.

Besides, look at the choices in this particular contest.

PS. I think Pitfall 2 is better than the original anyway.

The original final fantasy? Why do people still think that's good? At the TIME it was good... but today?

It has next to no plot, and absolutely no character interaction. The battle system is horrible. The soundtrack is horrible. The exp curve is shitty. Elemental damage is negligible, making mages almost completely useless and incredibly expensive. Really, the only good thing about it is that you're able to customize your own team.

Pitfall, however, is timeless.

The original FF was excellent for it's time. Now, however, the biggest problem is the gigantic transition times between screens, as compared to most of the fare today. That throws many people off of its true wonder. Maybe I'm just being sentimental...

Yup, the original FF hasn't aged well. Sure it WAS a good game but it's by no means timeless. Now FF6 on the otherhand...

Mirai Gen 04-05-2004 09:45 AM

we're talking all NES and previous games. This is going to be horrible.

People are going to recognize names. Then they'll vote. They've never played the REAL timeless game. I mean...Pac-Man Vs Metroid? I can play a game of pac-man every single day for the rest of my life for about half an hour and not get bored. THAT's timeless

Gamefaqs is about 95% fanboys, so it's pretty easy to predict what's going to happen. I bet some FF title wins the whole thing.

"Some FF title?"

No no no... look at the link. This is not about "Some FF title." It's about FF. Final Fantasy. You know, the original one.

And this is not about the most timeless game, just the best game by comparison to all the others. I'd vote for Super Mario Bros 3, but if you consider street date against it, SMB3 was probably the last game created of those listed which gives it a bit of an edge. Pong would be the first, though it will probably beat Galaga.

I know what the topic is about. I'm talking about the contest in general though.

I half agree. The problem with this idea, though, is that if the underdog doesn't win, it must have been fanboys. I agree--I have seen stupid fanboys vote for FF, Cloud, Sephiroth, or what have you, and beat a relatively unknown yet good game. But what if someone like me just honestly thinks the other game is better? Pitfall was a great game, but you're thinking like the FF fanboys do: "it will always be good!" Pitfall is the equivalent of a minigame now, and versus an entire game by today's standards it stands no chance, fanboys or no fanboys.
