When it's so screwy that you don't even care...

This is a work-related tale of woe, but the thrust of the thread is more or less related to my reaction to the event. Let's begin!

I was working for a restaurant recently, and had hoped to remain on-call for weekend shifts even after finding full-time employment. It was going alright for a while, but one week I didn't have any shifts scheduled. Not too big of a deal, but still a bit sad as we are not in the greatest financial situation.

But then it happened again for the next two weeks. At this point I had doubled my efforts on the full-time-work search front, and have since been gainfully employed. In the meantime though, I really SHOULD be working, right? So I called in to check the schedule, this being the forth week of no-shifts. Rather than let it slide I ask some probing questions of my manager and am told that I should talk to the OTHER manager about the issue.

Ok, so honestly? Screw that. Not feeling inclined to be very accommodating, I decided to let them inform me when they felt like gracing me with an opportunity to gain some legal tender.

I'd pretty much assumed that I'd been let-go, fired, terminated, or whatever the hip kids are calling it, but today I called in just to see what was up. Sure enough, "Yeah, Hi Nick. How's it going?" My reply, as nicely as I can possibly be in the face of such insincerity "Oh fine. Just wondering what happened. I haven't been scheduled for any shifts in the last 5 or 6 weeks and even mentioned that to (the general manager). I wanted to know if you guys still had me on payroll or what...?"

"Oh yeah. since we didn't hear from you we went ahead and terminated you. Ok? Bye"

Of course, there is a long enough pause between 'ok' and 'bye' for me to interject with the appropriate "excuse me? You don't put me on the schedule and I'm FIRED? I call in every week to check my schedule and you "Haven't heard from me?" Etc etc, on and on..." But it was just so completely stupid, so not worth my energy, that I just let it go.

What in your life has been so absurd, so mindbogglingly upsetting, that you just couldn't bear even accepting it and flung it off like a sweaty shirt?

I worked for over two years at a local business. Thought it was a great job, but it was my first. Really, it was a sucky job, but the people made it awesome. Anyway, I quit when I went out of state to college, but after I came back to go to more local schooling, I decided to pay them a visit. During which I had the the following conversation:

"Hey, Joe! Back in the area?"
"Yep! Hey, if I came back here, would I be able to get back my old pay?"
"Nope! Gotta start back at the bottom like everyone else."
"Well, what would I be making?"
"$5.75 and hour."
"..."

They were offering me starting what I had been making after TWO YEARS of loyal service and several raises. I knew that the minimum wage had been raised while I was gone, but still. I turned and walked out of the door with my pizza and have been back there a grand total of three times after that in the two years I've been home, two of which were in the first year.

I've been yelled at for not brooming the floor properly...

The floor was clean, but i wasnt using the broom "right".

Also, i was working at a hotel, also, I was in Check-In. Brooming wasnt part of my Job. Nor was making breakfast, or cleaning tables, or serving Room Service. But that was "ok"...

But the broom thing? I was... "yeah, y'know what? Screw this..."

When discussing religion:

Me, already mad: What next? You believe in the *does quoting gesture* "reptillian super-evolved race" that lives inside Earth?
My aunt: ...I do.
Me: You're joking.
Aunt: No.
Me: *sigh*
Aunt: One day you'll understand.

( My aunt belileves in spirits, reincarnation, super-evolved beings living inside Earth ( Earth is hollow! ), Nibiru's existance and such. Along with my mother and some more people, one of the reasons why I hate religions. )

This actually happened today. Our dispatcher sent me and my partner a 1pm pick up out of a hospital over 20 miles away. The time was 1254pm. My partner, having been an EMT for over 15 years, calls up the dispatcher and says: "Hey, I know it's a 1pm pickup, but it's 1254 and we won't make that, so we'll be a bit late."

The dispatcher's response? (over the radio so the whole office could hear no less): "I'm 29 years old and have been doing this for a while, I know what damn time it is."

...wha?

Well, she might have a theory behind her on that....

There are so many problems with that picture it's not even funny. :sweatdrop

I personally have a variance of beliefs not 100% out of the Catholic Church, but hell if most of them don't include documented and/or proven science. The rest of them follow from my own observations and statistics.

I was recently told by our inter-corporation health inspectors that I need to use a different type of cleaner on the floors from now on. Okay, cool. It's called LF-150 and it's used in the floor machines that the night crew uses after the store closes.

Well despite all my protesting, complaining, demanding, and whining we still only get two jugs of LF-150 a month and both of them get stolen and hidden by the night crew because we keep stealing them back because I'm under direct orders to use it.

So I've been using the standard floor cleaner for the last month and I'm positive at some point a health inspector is going to demand to know why I wasn't using the real cleaner like he told me.

If I'm lucky the guy will know that I don't have any other choice and if he chews out the store manager maybe he'll do something about it.

Oh and my store manager - Andy - is like the most forgetful, ignorant dickhead you can imagine. He smiles, nods, gives you that kind of feeling that you're being patted on the head, and tells you he'll take care of it, then it's a week later and we still only have one half-dead palette jack and the other one is sitting there, dead, and we're this close to not having any way to move our stacks around to, y'know, do our jobs.

So yeah it's just fun and lolipops down here at Raley's.
