Gendo is a character I think they wanted to have certain traits, but they never really thought about how the whole engine should actually work. So what we end up with is a guy who has all these horrible traits, but really really shitty justification for them. This says to me; "the writer has daddy issues."

I think Shinji and Asuka were realistic characters, maybe Misato too... and that Nerv guy who had a massive crush on her. Everyone else was more... plot devices.

Edit: I should say that this isn't necessarily a bad thing though, as long as you make the plot that they are devices for worth it.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would not work had Kamina lived. The story is all about Simon, and not taking Kamina out of the equation would hinder Simon's growth into a hero.

I'm reposting the following essay for the new influx of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann fans. Spoilers for the complete series in here. I'm sure you'll find it interesting.

And fuck the Evangelion haters. Again.

Production IG's Reideen remake was better than Rahxephon anyway.

Eh, it doesn't bother me that much. Shinji is a character who will trick you into hating him very easily.

It only bothers me when people get into big protracted arguments over it.

See, If I had to get into a giant machine and fight huge ass monsters, and feel the pain my mech would feel, I think I might be a little angsty. Just sayin...

I personally liked Zoids. Just the idea of team gladiator combat in interesting animal-based mechs seemed fun to me. Plus I liked the little judge guys.

Some just really really hate Hideaki Anno. others, like myself, just hate a majority of realistic Mecha. especially when the characters are VERY clearly drawn as Bishounen (not really the case in EVA, this more aptly covers Geass, Gundam SEED, Gundam SEED Destiny, Gundam Wing. in fact. I myself like Gundam X because the character were more Hot blooded and awesome. the captain is awesome and does some good old fashioned "Bright Slapping." and Turn A just has tons of awesome for us Hot Blood fans, from Harry Ord being the most awesome Char ever, to another of the character's units having a more generic Shining Finger.) Malodrama doesn't appeal to people like me. the kind of people who grew up on Digimon, the Original Macross, Transformers, etc. and if character development and drama are there, it has to be written in a specific way as to not cross a line and make us hate the characters.

I've always thought that Zoids was some perfect execution of every kids dream. I mean, pre-historic animal mechs with weaponry kind of hits every pleasure center in the brain of a kid who doesn't care about the opposite sex yet.

And that final fight where the sabertooth fights the T-Rex, both of them equipped with some plot device that makes them both the most advanced fighter in the world simultaneously, was pretty badass.

I wouldn't call any of modern Gundam "realistic" in the sense of Evangelion. The original Gundam series was more of a realistic mecha anime, but the current ones are very obviously in super robot territory.
