I mean, seriously, some parts of life are simply not politically correct, like the honest fact that the Hmong in my area are incredibly insular, but God help you if you say so. Their kids, third, fourth-generation immigrants, often come into the school system not knowing English. So we spend buttloads of money to teach it to them in Kindergarten so they can have the language down when they're supposed to actually start learning the curriculum. But saying it will probably get you stabbed by a million daggers generated by self-righteous glares and the occasional verbal response.

Thinking of it this way, it's Fahrenheit 451 to a lesser degree. All we need now is the Mildred Show and we Americans are set.

I agree completely

See, the reason classic Looney Toons (and a lot of other classic cartoons in general) cant work today, is because they are incredibly racially intolerant, which doesnt fly today. Nevermind that stuff like Rocky and Bullwinkle had anti communist propaganda in it. Bad guys named Natasha and Boris who are clearly poorly disguised Russians? Come on.

Nique 08-12-2008 12:47 AM

But there's a certain, like, tounge in cheek quality about that stuff isn't there? Maybe not Bugs Bunny going blackface, or yellowface, as the case may be... But like, Speedy Gonzalez? And you know what, Looney Tunes (toons?) may have been really offensive, but it's not like they portrayed White People in any better light. Yosemite Sam? Elmer Fudd? The ostensibly white animals (Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, etc)?

It's kind of a giant cartoon 'finger' to the whole world.

Yea, but even Equal Opportunity Discrimination doesnt fly anymore. South Park gets no end of it these days, and that is clearly not a kids show. Looney Toons was a kids show.

They were made back when movies were an all-day event. See, back then Theaters just had one screen, and continuously played the same stuff. If my grandpa is to be beleived, it Went Newsreel-Cartoon-A movie-Cartoon-BMovie-Newsreel.

the point is every part of the program had to appeal to everyone.

No it wasn't. Not specifically or exclusively anyway. There were a lot of things in those cartoons that would fly right over the head of most kids- I know they did when I watched them as a kid (fortunately I'm just old enough to remember seeing them on Nickelodeon and occasionaly on TNT as well).

Nique 08-12-2008 08:18 AM

Most of the shows that are specifically for kids, or at least the shows where the entirty of the content is geared twoards kids, are crap, I would just like to point out.
