Martin Scorsese- Love him? Or Hate him?

I am a person who just recently discovered the work of Scorsese and I have found something very interesting when people are talking about his work. Scorsese has never made a film that everyone just liked. You either love the film or hate it. For insistence, I really loved Raging Bull, it should have won the Oscar. But I found the movie Departed to have one of the worst endings I have seen and that actually won him his first Oscar. So I am wondering what are you guy's favorite.

-My Favorite list-
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
The Aviator

-My Worst list-
Casino (for not doing anything different from Goodfellas)
Departed (for its ending, and having too many A-list actors)
Cape Fear (mostly because I can't enjoy looking at De Niro without seeing Cady)

I disagree in that I really, really enjoy Casino for not doing anything different from Goodfellas. If he made them I'd watch 20 fucking Goodfellas. (Although weirdly I've never watched Casino all the way through. I get as far as Joe and DeNiro falling out and then have to do something else or fall asleep or something.) Although Goodfellas is by far the superior movie. I attribute this wholly to Casino's lack of Ray Liotta.

I've never seen Raging Bull or Taxi Driver which is almost certainly stupid of me. I also haven't seen Aviator which actually doesn't appeal to me at all.

I'd like to know where Gangs of New York falls on your list, personally it is one I really liked.

Oh really, You didn't see my favorite scene in Casino. Finish the movie, your like halfway through the movie.

But I must admit I don't really hate Casino. I loved the love story (or lack of) in the movie but De Niro's voice is no Ray Liotta and his casting in that role could have been better, it was just to believe that De Niro was being talked down to. And of course Sharon Stone was perfect.

Gangs of New York, I'm pretty on the fence about that movie. Day-Lewis was perfect. DiCaprio continued his tradition of adequate acting. Cameron Diaz couldn't keep her accent throughout the whole film. All in all it was a great film especially the ending, but I'm kind of have a weird feeling about it, like in Casino, like I'm missing true perspective of whole film. So Yeah I'm kind of on the fence.

I loved Raging Bull. "Bring it ovah" is a big phrase me and my friends use

Gangs of New York

That's all you need. Simply because it has great action and it's fairly true to the source of New York in the 1800s and the Five Points of Lawlessness.

Damn Awesome!

You loved the domestic abuse scene (as if there were just one)?

Which he totally stole from the Flintstones even though your typical Scorsese-phile will swear up and down that a movie made in 1980 somehow predates a cartoon that ended in 1966.

In your list, I'd definitely switch around Aviator and Departed. I personally found Aviator to be a slog to watch and I can't really recall any memorable scenes (it's not a bad movie, just boring) while Departed had Alec Baldwin insulting people.

Funny, very funny.
To me, boring isn't a real selling point to exclaim a movie is bad. And Alec Baldwin was bad but it was nothing to Mark Wahlberg.

But my biggest problem with Departed was the ending. I feel like Spock, "So... illogical". After the movie I thought of at least two better ways for Billy to handle that situation. But maybe that's just me. I'm a stickler for a good ending.

I actually disliked The Departed for being a really bad Americanization of Infernal Affairs; other than an ending that wraps up the plot so there isn't a need for sequels, the inclusion of ridiculous gore ( Jack Nicholson fountains blood up out of his mouth at his death, ON PURPOSE, laughingly, lips pursed) and other elements made me hate it.

I agree with everyone who said it was basically a "sorry" Emmy; he should've won for any of his other dozen films, but never did, so they gave it to him for The Departed even though it was easily one of the worst films he's made.

Casino versus Goodfellas, hmm. I'll err on the side of caution and say that Goodfellas is better but Casino was pretty damn enjoyable. I agree with Fifth that he could've just made 20 carbon copies of Goodfellas and I would've watched them all.

Of his "non-mob related films" I'd say Taxi Driver is the only one I've really liked. I think it was his first real film, because I for one just didn't get Mean Streets. Did anyone else get the point of Mean Streets? I didn't get the point of Mean Streets. It didn't even have an ending, really.

Well, I just could never feel invested in anything that was happening. I think the A.V. Club calls it Biopicitis, where a movie stops being about the personal human story of a real person and instead devolves into a one-size-fits-all morality tale, which is kind of a shame since Raging Bull shows that Scorsese can make an amazing biopic.

Hmm, just in case I wasn't clear, I loved Alec Baldwin. I mean, he could have repeated "I'm gonna go have a smoke right now. You want a smoke? You don't smoke, do ya? What are ya, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go fuck yourself." for all of his lines and I would have been happy. Hell, Marky Mark made the film with his "I'm the guy who does his job.You must be the other guy." line.

I definitely think that he won an apology Oscar, but it was far from his worst film (Bringing Out the Dead). I mean, I'm still surprised they found 10 nominations to give Gangs of New York, since Daniel Day-Lewis could only possibly count for six at most.
