Tropic Thunder: A not-as-fruity as Pineapple express

The movie was pretty good. Coulda been way better though.

I saw it stoned, and I thought some of the dialogue was HILARIOUS. I won't go into detail so as not to spoil it, but man, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise were awesome.

Speaking of which, i did NOT know that Tom Cruise was going to be in this movie!! He was not headlined, nor advertised, and you only find out at the end of the movie, during the credits, that it really is him.

Really good performance, really shockingly good.

Anyway, the movie itself had a lot of funny parts, but overall, I didn't really like the plot. It seemed really condescending and hypocritical, and maybe even pretentious to me. But there were quite a few funny parts, so I can deal.

Thoughts?

I absolutely loved it. Almost as much as TDK or In Bruges. Genius script and all the acting is pitch perfect.

There have been a lot of pretty good movies out this summer...probably one of, if not the, best summer(s) of this decade.
It's only going to partially make up for how bad next year's gonna stink, though. The writer's strike of yore will really have a negative impact on '09's crop of movies.

Are you a cop?

Thought not.

Anyway. I might see the movie next week on Payday. Providing I don't need to take my car to the shop.

I gotta say, for some reason the Scorcher VI trailer just devastated me. From the initial plot (world stops spinning = cinder earth), to the "And then it happened again...and again...and again...and again...and then things got interesting." part, it was just perfect. Mentioning Toby Maguire's "MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss" accolade was great too.

Also, I get why people are genuinely surprised by Cruise's performance, but I wouldn't say he was the best aspect of the movie like I read before I saw it. The costume and lines were great without a doubt (I'm probably going to use "Now back up a few feet AND FUCK YOURSELF!" way more than is socially acceptable), but he was also competing with the full-retard discussion and the special effects breakdowns.

I remember see something from Special Olympics calling for a boycott of this movie for something about Stiller playing a 'retard'. Was it as bad as they wanted to make it out to be or is it more college-level frat humor revolving around that stuff?
Doesn't matter to me either way, I personally have no plans to see this movie to be honest, but I'll pro'ly Netflix it when it gets to DVD.
