The Indie Movement: The Modern-Day "Hippie" Movement?
Me and my friends were sitting around listening to Radiohead (Which is by the way, the best music, ever, ever ever. The lyrics...oh my god, it's the deepest music ever!) and we had a realization. We realized that music's movements all have origins.
If you trace back the Indie movement, you can see how it's beginnings trace into the end of the Hippie movement. And the same concepts - social rebellion, looking for deeper meaning in life, etc. A completely different tangent in music, not wanting to stay mainstream. Not to turn this into a Beatles thread, but similarly, the Beatles broke away from mainstream pop, and released Abbey Road, a mind-blowing album in the far left direction. Then I was thinking, the Hippie movement has it's traces in the Jazz movement that preceded it in the 40's and 50's. (For those that did not know: The 50's Jazz clubs were frequented as 'Beatniks', something that led to the 'Beat' generation, with authors like Ken Kesey. From there, the 'Beatles' derived their name, and took the Beatnik movement and turned it into the Hippie movement). Then I realized that I'm sure the Jazz movement had it's traces. This made me wonder - I bet you "Classical" music was considered revolutionary at one point, since it was indeed a step away from Church-related music (Choirs, gospels, etc.) Thoughts? Anyone that can further our revelation into something else? Or are we all just stoners that think we found something that doesn't exist? (If anyone can find traces into the Beatnik/Jazz movement by the previous movement, I'd definitely appreciate any sort of education you can bestow upon me!) |

Also, not to condone stoner-ism or anything, but the term HYYYYYYPPPPPSST-TUR is derived from the same sequence that gave us hippies, so you aren't just spinning your wheels. Of course, all HYYYYYYPPPPPSST-TURs these days are HYYYYYYPPPPPSST-TUR-hating HYYYYYYPPPPPSST-TURs, but that's a whole 'nother mess of worms. Any ways, I think I get what you guys were going for, but I think you're hampered by the fact that there isn't a unified 'indie' movement in this modern age, or for a while even. I'm sure there's a veritable shitton of genres with varying degrees of "fuck-the-man"-itude (your straightedges, DIYs, punk, etc.), but mostly we've entered a period where it's more or less a band's personal decision on how abrasive or un-mainstream they want to be, and if that quality is part of their message or just their craft. |
Come on, everyone knows ravers are the new hippies. Indies are the new mods.

I personally disaprove of the indie movement, because Im sickl of indie people telling me how much of a "pathetic mindless sheep" I am because I listen to bands like Metallica and Godsmack.

Anybody who labels you or any ground by point towards one single piece of an aspect of your personality is a utter moron. C'mon, that's a given

Wyn, I totally dig (quote-unquote) "Indie" music. I do - I love a lot of what's coming outta that area. That being said, I think I have to disagree with you on the whole "movement" front.
I think that while, things are similar, the "Hippy" movement (And I'm guessing you're referring to the 60's, which was the stereotypical hippy "era") the youth had a lot more to fight for. Women's lib, no more racism. We, as indy lovers, are just music fans. And take from my statement what you will, because I would love some counterpoints to this. (And I know I'm probably wrong in a few points.) |

Id argue that you can technically fight for that stuff now, its just less meaningful because its far less sever then like, 40-50 years ago.

Ok me being a jerk to Joshelplex aside, I find it interesting that modern Pop seems to be a fusion of the hippie movement and, I'm guessing Disco, which is also father to techno and house music it would seem. Damn I need this to be mapped out family-tree style. |
