Let the 8bit online AW commuinty begin!

It's obviously got tons of flaws, but hell, it's fun! Sure, you can't load units onto ships, sure there's a ton of work to be done, but for now it's a fun little diversion. Maybe we can contact the author and get him to make more?

Everything is operated with mouse. If you're lost, read readme. Tips: do not use cruiser, bugged. Right now, you only get a set amount of money per round. To end your turn, right click and click.

Edit: OH. MY. GOD. I just had a 2 hour game with my friend on the "Spann Island" map (shit it's 4:14 am), and it was the most satisfying RTS experience I have ever had in my life, and that's with a handicapped beta version of the game!

Allow me to praise myself cos someone just has to know.

The map is very small--picture below (this is after I won, obviously, since there are no red units). It started interestingly enough. We had our infantry and such, but eventually we both started making rockets--the long range trucks. We were wary of their range, and soon we had built up a sort of line of rockets on either side, just out of each others reach by a square, creating a sort of no mans land in the center that essentially meant death. Well, we kept trying several strategies. At first, I sent in recons to attack the rockets because they had long range and could get within their blind spots.

I, meanwhile, after some brilliant moves, decided that the only way to break through the 6-rocket barrier was to set up md tanks in several points (for those interested should note that these points were that little bridge at the top, the little bridge at the bottom, and two in the middle, all out of the rockets' range) and rush, so there was too much to focus on. The plan half-succeeded and I destroyed a few of his rockets, and a little hole was created in the barrier. The hole was soon filled with a new rocket, but not before i jammed a unit behind the rocket lines, and behind the rocket vision. The key to this entire game was jamming and blocking skills. Your infantry basically became your fodder because you had to place them so that the strong units couldnt attack your best units.

So it kept on like this. I then had a revelation. I set up another tank offense, but started building infantry--like crazy. I knew if I sent the infantry into no mans land, they would be shot. Why not send so many that there were no rockets left to attack my good units? I did just that. There would be 4 or so infantry at the top and several on the bottom, and only one rocket to attack my good units, who were already closing in. I had to keep making the fodder to keep the rockets busy.

Now there was sort of a fray as I blocked some of his factories, but that didn't do it. He began creating infantry as a sheer force of power to drive me back, with powerful units liberally sprinkled in between. I still had a presence, and the thing that lead to my victory was useless 1 hp units cleverly positioned in a spot where htey could not be damaged (in an enemy city for example, a 1hp tank that all the infantry could still not kill). I had successfully converted the battle into a ground battle. He began pressing more, but I finally built an anti-air gun which doubles as a great infantry-slaughter-machine. I plowed through the top and cleverly destroyed his blocking units so my powerful ones could destroy the last rockets.

Soon I landed my 4 units on his factories while all his powerful units were in the upper-righthand corner trying to overpower me--he could no longer build. He had to rely on 3 almost full-health md tanks, but that wasn't enough--my factories were all open, plus I had many blocking units. I let a few of his tanks escape and even extended the game a few rounds, but in the end my blockage units just dislodged themselves and destroyed him.

The game didn't have an official end because of glitches--but by advance war rules, i destroyed all his units and won. wow. that was freaking satisfying. i suggest you all go and play, there are some awesome maps.

i shouldve recorded this.

Thanks for the heads up, I love this game on GBA.

Is there Fog of War implemented? If not, I'm not interested.

Living Bobbeh 04-08-2004 12:26 PM

It will be in the newer versions. this is only beta with some of the stuff missing.

I checked the site though and it says this is the "final" version, which would imply that there aren't going to be future versions for it to be implemented into....

I e-mailed the guy, the game is clearly not finished, and the readme says something about fog of war, but I haven't looked into it.

I still suggest playing, it's so fun. The maps are very creative.

What about COs? I friggin love AW but I'll be damned if you've only got Andy to work with...

From the sound of it there really is no COs to work with.

Lockeownzj00 04-09-2004 11:22 PM

There aren't COs yet. But give it a chance! It's still fun. Maybe we can find a way to continue the project.

Jagos 04-09-2004 11:36 PM

I coulda sworn that someone else was putting the AW games online and having people dl the maps? I'll be back...

-edit- Nintendo scores again... there used to be a website at the address of advancewars.net that had a walkthru and info on people that wanted to get AW online. I believe that with an emulator, you can actually link up on the net right now with the Rom... dunno...

Okay I downloaded it and everything but I have a couple of issues.
1. I have never played Advance Wars (but I have got Fire Emblem!)
2. Who wants to play with me? And how do you play with someone over a modem game, Internet, etc?
