McCain Camp "offended" by Tina Fey's portrayal
I don't know if anyone caught the SNL bit (I'm dissapointed that I haven't seen a one since the campaign began) but apparently Cindy McCain and others are having trouble taking a joke?
Through the rumour-mill, word is that Sarah Palin found it hilarious, while the rest of the McCain groupies are going at the "utterly offended" angle again, as seen with the lipstick on a pig fiasco. They called Tina Fey's portrayal 'sexist', which, since they also claimed the actress playing the former US President hopeful gave Clinton a more dignified approach or some such nonsense, I don't really see how it would be sexist? But then again, I didn't see the skit. And uh, I guess if this needs to be moved... go ahead? Didn't really think we wanted a Political thread in general. |
I'm amazed at how utterly hypocritical they're being with this.
Five minutes of searching could most likely dig up at least three instances of Republicans referring to Hilary in a..less than equality minded manner. That and they seem to have the amazing ability to pick the wrong fights, You're trying to show that your VP can handle the stress of being a heartbeat away from the presidency? That your opponents are sexist? Then you should probably target those issues. But apparently the best way to do that is to show that she can't take a joke from a Sketch Comedy show? |
I didn't see the particular sketch in question, but this is nothing new. Humor, sadly, is the one thing that nobody can ever seem to accept, particularly if the one being skewered is the one likely to react badly. Politicians, in particular, seem to dislike the use of satire most intensely... perhaps because any good true humor always has at least a grain of truth buried within it.
That being said, those in the comedy business do have a saying: "F*** 'em if they can't take a joke." |
I saw the sketch. It was hilarious. I did not see anything particularly sexist (unless "portraying Sarah Palin in any way at all in a sketch" is the new "sexist" and I haven't heard about it). It's like McCain's people are going out of their way to choose the absolute worst and most nonsensical things to work themselves up over (or at least appear to work themselves up over). By the way, this sketch's been around since Saturday, and they're just working up indignation about it now?
Or maybe McCain is trying to come over as Sensitive to Women's Concerns by getting himself a female running mate and repeatedly crying sexist. "Oh no, that's sexist, and so is that, and that and, um, that too. I am so effing feminist now! No, seriously! Now all you ladies gotta vote for me, right?" (I have a sinking feeling this might just work, too.) |
They're playing a political gamble by trying to associate sexism with anti-Palin sentiment and garner additional woman votes.
In this instance, however, it is coming off as stupid on their part, because the sort of women who might fall for their ploy would also find the skit hilarious and are all probably aware that Saturday Night Live is a comedy show. |
Watching it parts of it that I can find on youtube (this one seems to be the best), the skit seems to dig at Hillary harder than Palin. But overall, this was pretty mild in comparison with past political sketches, and the McCain camp getting worked up over it brings up images of old man McCain shaking his cane and yelling at some damn kids to get off of his lawn.
McCain seems to be pretty bad at making gambles. |
Here's the whole thing. Considering the number of clips on YouTube that I've seen pulled down, I think YouTube was requested by the McCain campaign to pull it down.

Tough shit McCain campaign, it's free goddamn speech and welcome to the 1st amendment.
|
Actually, I think it's NBC that goes apeshit about the clips on YouTube. And they actually do have the right to have them removed. That's probably why you can only find clips of things like FoxNews talking about it (and showing clips). NBC technically has no rights over those clips.

I find this hilarious in that Sarah Palin's entire appeal is that she looks a little bit like Tina Fey.
