So the new James Bond theme is out

Another Way to Die ~ The Quantum of Solace theme

What do you guys think? I'll admit I didn't like it at first, but it is growing on me a bit. I just don't really care for the singing/lyrics. Mainly, it's just that I can't stand Jack White. At all. Ever. Alicia Keys is fine, though I wish the lyrics were a little more... Bondian.

The varying musical styles in this don't seem to gel completely, but I like what they're trying to do. Hopefully it'll be like Cornell's "You Know My Name" for Casino Royale, where the radio version was different (and in fact, inferior) to the theme eventually heard in the movie.

I am totally unconvinced this is Bond in any way. The singing just completely kills it; it's as if they injected rap/ethnic culture into Bond, which is the last thing I ever would have conceived them attempting.

Pass.

Masked Jedi 09-19-2008 01:45 PM

Really? I think it's total Bond. The tempo, the melodies, everything.

Prolly my favorite Bond song, though Cornell's one and Goldfinger are pretty damn close.

Mirai Gen 09-19-2008 02:10 PM

Oh no everything else is great.

I just can't stand the singing.

Masked Jedi 09-19-2008 02:51 PM

Everyone has different tastes I guess. I love the singing.

Also, Jonathan Coulton should do the song for the Bond movie after Quantum.

Honestly, the 'Bond song' is arguably the most unnecessary part of every Bond movie seeing as, at best, it merely exists to make the usually garish opening credits passable instead of grueling.

I'll admit I started to tune out after the one Madonna did, and they've all been pretty much the same since I stopped paying attention.

Magus 09-23-2008 11:51 PM

Yes, I don't think anything can top the Madonna one for horribleness.

One thing I can't figure out though is why, after having about 99% of the openings having a woman singer and floating naked woman, Casino Royale opted for a male singer and abstract card related male figures fighting? I know they wanted to sort of making it a "re-launching" of Bond, but some things probably shouldn't be changed.

At least this returns to a female singer. Now we just have to wait and see if the opening's visuals follow suit.

I disagree and believe the opening is fairly necessary, though not as necessary as the gun-barrel-follows-Bond-before-he-fires-and-kills-the-aimer part. The problem has been that some openings are good and some are just plain bad. I for one never liked On Her Majesty's Secret Service's opening, and as I said before Die Another Day's was absolutely terrible.

Code Monkey shoot terrorist banker.

Anyways...
Not a fan of this song, which is sad because I love Daniel Craig as Bond and I loved Cornell's theme for Casino Royale. Maybe through some freak accident they'll get a new song. Or this is a sick joke. Maybe both.

Why should these two things be part of that category, though? I really see no reason.

As for why, specifically, a male signer (even though I see no real need for a why on the question): the song seems to kinda, sorta be sung more through Bond's perspective than anything.

I think that also goes for the fighting and cards. Hey, it's the original Bond story, so you got to get essential. Still: yay less garish, gratuitous nudie figures.

They cut off the gadgets, then, the Trademark lines (the martini one on Cassino Royale, and there is talk about bond not presenting himself with the usual "bond, james bond" on this one) and so on so on... keep this up and the "James bond musical opening" will either fall or be the only legacy the movies have in common
