My creatures evolve the ability to roll while a spike ball, propelling themselves under cover when threatened.

IHMN: The birds cease to bother you. However, large, sheetlike predators which hide under the soil and pop up out of it and eat them now. Response? 8 notches up.
FZ: Okay, you're eating smaller creatures but the predators are still around and eating you. 2 notches up.
Biran: Okay, you do that, but a new species of predators that works with a snake-like sense of smell (i.e. tounges) starts hunting them down. 7 notches up.
Dr DR: Hmmm...the monkey creatures now wield bigger, sharper sticks, similar to spears. They begin shishcabobing (or however you write it) your guys, and then plucking off the spikes and eating them. (delicious!)

I evolve my claws for climbing trees into claws that can fight and kill, making it easier to catch smaller prey, and to fight back against my predators.
