Superhero Comedy Movies?
When have these ever worked? I mean throw in a couple of jokes into a superhero movie....sure, that works great.
But Seth Rogen as The Green Hornet? With Stephen Chow as Kato? I suppose this could be enjoyable if Chow were writing it instead of Rogen. Who wants to guess that The Green Hornet is going to be a bumbling idiot who gets all the credit for what Kato really does? |
I liked Mystery Men. I believe it worked fairly well. Hancock didn't seem half bad either.
But yeah, I don't get Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet either. It seems like they could partially serious about it, like your average '80s cop movie, without being extremely serious or anything. Full-on comedy, though, I don't think it'd work for that one...but it could work out. As for your theory of how the plot will go, you're probably right. Hopefully it's as good as, oh, Dragnet (the comedy with Dan Akroyd, not any of the actual serious Dragnet series or movies). |
Why will this suck? Because The Return of Captain Invicible has already been made.

I'm gonna contribute the problem to an inherent Curse of Bigness associated with superhero flicks. You can't make something funny by throwing money at it, and people enter into superhero movies expecting expensive looking baskets of shininess. Mystery Men is a good example of this, as there are some genuinely funny lines that are mired under mounds of absolutely unnecessary sets and production values.
Basically, superhero comedies work when you focus as little as possible on showing superheroics. No Heroics uses powers as punchlines, The Specials is basically Mystery Men with about 1/100th the budget but more laughs, things like that. |

God damn it, we need Mel Brooks on this case, and quick. He'd get a parody done right.

There's also Ant-Man being produced by the Shaun of the Dead folks.

Superhero Movie wasn't a superhero comedy. It was a movie parody comedy.
Unlike Mystery Men, which was quirky and somewhat unhinged but very quotable and throughly enjoyable if only ironically, Superhero movie is the same tired trash foul unfunny humour we've gotten with Scary Movie 1-whatever, Date movie, Teen Movie etc. |
