Caffeine makes me tired

First, I got to tell ya, caffeine doesn't affect me very much at all. I've had Coke, Jolt, Chocolate, Mountain Dew, and all sorts of other Caffine-riddled stuff before (actually, I've consumed all four during the coarse of one night once), but 90% it just doesn't do anything. I might feel a bit more alert but it stops there. I've tried drinking Coffee before to get an extra buzz, but I just can't stand the stuff. No matter how much creme/sugar I put into it, it still tastes like crap. But I digress.

Last night my bro and I stopped by a gas station and I noticed a package of Jolt gum. Y'all have probably seen it at one point or another. It's made by the same people who make the soda, and claim that 2 piece's = 1 cup of coffee. I though, "Great! I can get the immense amount of Caffeine of coffee with something that doesn't taste like crap!" So I bought it, and popped in two pieces. 10 minutes later and no affect, I was confident that I could handle the rush and promptly had 2 more.

Within the hour I felt immensly tired. It was the same feeling you get from playing a game all day, with all your senses drained from your body. I lasted as long as I could, but it wasen't long before I collapsed.

Does this happen to anyone else, or know why? I've heard of it happening to other people but I'm really in the dark as to why.

Also, I learned last week that Caffeine is addictive. Isn't that damned?

That happens to me when I have a tons of Caffeine in a short amount of time. For me I had just had 5 expresso shots, which is a lot of caffeine. I was pretty damn tired in about 20 minutes.

I think that your perception of a "caffeine high" is much different than what it actually is. It's not like going Super Saiyan or chomping an Energizer (Guess that reference! Most people don't know "Energizer" to be the proper name of the item...), but rather makes your metabolism run faster for a few minutes or hours. You shouldn't feel hyperactive unless you've downed a huge amount of the substance in a short time. For the most effective caffeine highs, you need to take in a small amount over a long period of time. "Ride the wave," so to speak.

I believe in your case that you simply process caffeine much more quickly than others. That's why you're crashing quickly. And once someone processes all that caffiene, they will crash. Your neural receptors have been physically altered by the presence of caffeine. They once accepted other chemicals, but now need caffeine to function normally. Because things aren't happening normally now, the bodily functions now associated with the caffeine slow down when there's no more caffeine. That's why you feel tired.

Your body can use only so much of the stuff at once, which is why consuming a large amount of caffeine in one sitting will make you crash more quickly. The excess will work its way out of the system while your caffeine receptors are completely plugged-up with other caffeine molecules.

Caffeine is probably the single-most-used addictive substance in the world. It's probably the only addictive chemical that doesn't seem to completely interfere with a person's life, so put down a liter of Dew, swig a Jolt, eat a whole box of Penguin mints, and eat chocolate (which has caffeine, yes) with gusto.

You shall know the zen one day.

Dude, you should change your subtitle to "A Science Bitch." This and the shrinking thing prove it. Plus, you don't seem to be pretentious enough to be an art bitch.

Caffeine has no real effect on my either. Or my dad, which, I suppose, is where I get it from. We need extra anesthetics when it comes to things like surgery and whatnot; we have a high tolerance. Which is scary, if I ever forget. Man, I hope I don't.

Caffeine also makes me tired if I have to much of it. I can easily stay up for two days at a time. Unless, I have a lot of caffeine. For some reason, I stay awake easier without it. I hate the tastes of coffee so I don't even bother with that. Sometimes just a little caffeine helps me, but to much of it and it will have the opposite reaction and I'll fall asleep.

Yeah, yeah, you're right. I'll lay off the science for a while. Best not to start out my membership on the boards as a know-it-all. I'll exhaust my useless knowledge too quickly and be SOL.

I'm only an art bitch in that I do all of the art and web design for my comic while Jesse comes up with funny things to write.

I wonder if thousands of years of exposure to a chemical like caffeine will eventually cause an evolutionary shift toward either caffeine immunity or pan-species addiction.

Hmm... I'm going into science again, aren't I? Curses.

YOu should try an Energy Drink. I had an EMX once, I was hyper for 5 hours
THen I crashed. WHoo.

Hmm, the only caffeine source that affects me is coffee. Chocolate, pop, etc never have the same effect. On the other hand, I don't get a caffeine high either, and I drink coffee black and super strong(two scoops per cup... !). I become less tired; that's the only effect it has on me, as well as the only effect I want it to have on me.

Caffeine is only addictive in the sense that, if you commonly drink 6-10 cups of coffee a day(around) and then suddenly stop taking in caffeine altogether, you'll suffer some mild withdrawal symptoms (like headaches). I wouldn't put it up there with nicotine.

I remember I waited until the last possible minute to do a school project (12:30 the night before it was due). I was fading fast so I went and got the caffeine pills I took from where I work (I knew I was going to need them that night) and popped one of them. It was the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee, but with my metabolism it seemed more like 6. I didn't get hyper, but all of my limbs started trembling. It helped me stay awake, but writing straight was a bitch. You should've seen the finished product. It looked like I wrote the whole thing in a car while going over speed bumps.

But, then it put me right to sleep. I know what you mean. I was exhausted after that.

No form of caffine seems to have an effect on me. I'm always half awake no matter what, and coffee and all that other stuff doesn't have any effect at all. It might be because of my energy output(which is very, very little), or something that can't be explained, but if something has caffine, it won't do anything to me.
