SETI@home: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence... With your help
I believe this has been around for quite a long time, but I'm going to bring it up again as I assume many of you haven't heard of it.
Basically, the University of California at Berkeley has been capturing radio telescope data from space for years, they're looking for anything that might resemble a radio transmission from intelligent life. But, with their computer systems it would take decades to analyze all the data they gather from the cosmos. So, they've turned to the Internet for help. You download a small program that can either run in the background, or only when the screensaver is on. It analyzes a packet of radio data and after it is done it sends the completed analysis back to Berkeley for review. I think it's pretty nifty to help out their program like this, and according to the statistics on the site, a lot of help has been offered. You can take a closer look at the program and all the information here. I've also taken the liberty to make a group, if you want to join it, follow this link. Hurrah for science! Maybe they'll find something someday with our help. ^^ |
Not to be confused with the SETI: Search for an Extra-Tiny Interface skin suite:
http://www2.wincustomize.com/skins.a...=1&SkinID=2333 http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.as...kinID=2337&u=0 http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/downl...omponentID=131 As for the real SETI, there's plenty of you people out there who leave your computer on and aren't even using it. This thing takes a small amount of computing power/clock time to thread a process through and complete some calculations. I know 'nix boxes have been able to contribute for a long time, and have been. I've considered installing the needed apps on the computers in the lab... |
Exactally, I leave my compy on all the time, and there's at least 10 hours a day that it's just sitting there idle, so I figure, why not donate those clock cycles to science.
Course, I leave the seti thing going all the time, I've got more then enough power, it doesn't make a big enough impact to slow anything down. |
What exactly is your group for?
|
Oh, there isn't really any real reason to make the groups, it's just a way to put people together and see how much analysis they've all done together. It's just for fun, really.
|
I am curious, speaking of groups, about one thing I thought I saw somewhere.
For forums such as this, aren't there groups who have small, dynamically updated sig images concerning SETI progress and help provided via the group? There is a good chance these images were for some other purpose and merely had SETI or something like it as part of the text. Or that my memory is creating false images based off of multiple things. [Edit] haha, ok, looking on the site first would be a good idea. http://www.geocities.com/theTFZ/SETI/SETIsig.html http://www.aouc84.dsl.pipex.com/setisig.htm That's kind of what I was thinking about. Though this is more like it: http://www.visualecho.org/setibanner/ |
469 data units completed! huah!
i used to have two comptuers running all the time, and i had left on a few old pentiums that were lieing aroudn. but it took, like, a week for each pentium to do a single unti, so i just packed those away. besides, my dad was complaining about electric bills. :( |
I used to do it all the time on my old imac, but the ones for me on my pc don't work.
|
i joined the 8bit group!
|
Heh, I heard that Seti@Home is running out of data for the people to analyze. D: It was some article on space.com. I'll look for it soon.
It just goes to show you the latent power of idling computers across the world. :D |
