Can I play this on my PS1?
So... My copy of the original Silent Hill got broken in half. Don't ask how. I have a working Playstation One and would like to beat Silent Hill and move on to SH3. I have the ISO file on my compy, and was wondering if there is any way that I could get it to play on my PS1.

Probably not without one o' them mod chips. I'm not actually sure about the legality of such.
If your computer's up to it you could try to emulate it. Here I am pretty sure that it's illegal though, although you do/did have an original copy. Alternatively you could of course get another one. |
Yeah, I thought it was legal since I own a copy but I could be wrong. Don't want to buy a new one since the game is out of print and people on intarwebs like to sell it for too much. Looks like my only hope is seeing if I can find it at a pawn shop.

I had figured this would be against the rules? Man piracy makes my head hurt sometimes.
If you don't mind taking apart your PSX there's a swap-trick I heard about. But I think it'd just be better if you found another copy. PSX games are incredibly cheap provided you aren't going for super rarities like Arc the Lad or Lunar or Valkyrie Profile. I got MMX4 and Symphony of the Night like, for fifteen bucks each right about when the PS2 was during half it's lifespan (called the 'five-year plan', hurr hurr). |
I think it's being left up to a mod more knowledgeable of the laws what govern vidja games. That said, I would like to avoid buying the same game twice if I can. Even if it only is $15. EDIT: Especially since the people who made the game wouldn't be making a dime off it.

I dunno man, it's nice having the originals. Same reason I've still got my copies of Mega Man X4, SotN, MGS, MGS: VRM, and Bushido Blade.
|
I know it is, it just isn't $35 nice, which is the cheapest I've found it online so far.

I've heard it both ways, but I do not think it's legal to make a copy of the game even for personal use. Not that I really care, nor do you, evidently.
Anyway, yeah, for the swap trick you need a modchip or gameshark unless you fancy snatching spinning discs out of your console and replacing them in like 0.1 seconds. It's the same with imports. |
Well, the way the ball bounces is that you do have an ISO made from the original disc, which was backed up for archival purposes, which much software allows. Not 100% on PS games, but I think computer software is okay with it. At any rate, if you can find an emulator you like (I prefer ePSXe), that can run an ISO (can't remember if ePSXe can), you can start a new file and probably run it up to speed on your computer. I'd say to make it all perfectly legal that you should dump your BIOS from your PS1, but it's a pain in the ass and you own it anyway, so you shouldn't feel bad about getting the exact same thing from someone who's been savvy enough to do it for you. Google is your friend.
