Unsung Heroes of our Favorite Games

Almost every game has them. Those small players, those few npcs, who nobody thinks about, but without whom the games would be nearly impossible or unplayable.

I dedicate this thread to remembering some of the greatest bit players and most important NPCs in video game history!

To start it off with Norstein Bekkler. You may remember him better is the floating head and hands in Chrono Trigger. If not for this single, almost completely overlooked character, it is possible that Crono might have not had a happy ending.

Recognize this guy?
Bogey from Kid Radd which isn't actually a game but a comic about a variety of games. But the thread is a fitting tribute to him if you know the story.

Nikola Tesla is an unsung hero of the Red Alert series. Everyone's always going on and on about how Einstein made the Allies unstoppable, but people ignore the scientist behind like HALF THE SOVIETS' FUCKING ARSENAL.

Also, for Blazing Angels, the greatest hero of the game was... umm, Joe, I think his name was. The mechanic. Because he was capable of fighting hundreds of enemy German or Japanese pilots at once even though it wasn't his original calling, and he was not only capable of fixing his plane mid-flight, he was capable of telling the player how to do it for himself from kilometers away, regardless of whether he was actually able to see or not.

Wait Bekkler of that fun house at the carnival?... how did Chrono have a happy ending because of him?

For me, it'd have to be Buzz Buzz of Earthbound. A brave soldier who awakened the fighting soul of a mere boy of Onett only to be swatted down in battle thus weakening him for the rest of the game (NO HE DIDN'T DIE STOP LYING TO ME). His sacrifice has been forgotten as the years pass, but he is... a true PATRIOT.

This little guy over here:

MOTHER 3

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9000/clausry2wg6.jpg

The first son of Hinawa and Flint, Claus is not only Lucas' brother, but also his best friend. They live together in Tazumili Village, a town in Nowhere Island, happily eating omelettes prepared by their mother every day.

One day, however, disaster strikes Tazumili. While Hinawa and the kids are visiting their grandfather Alec, a group of Pig Masked men set off a bomb in the middle of Sunshine Forest. Flint goes out to investigate what happened, worried about his wife and his two sons. He finds Lucas and Claus, but not without a high price to pay. The animals of the forest had become dangerous because of unknown reasons, and one of the closest to the kids, Drago, attacked Hinawa and stabbed a fang through her heart. The family collapses after the event. Swearing revenge, Claus leaves his brother and father behind in order to kill Drago. Unfortunately, he dies falling from a cliff during the battle. Flint and Lucas never find any trace of him.

Here is where the interesting part comes: a few years later, Lucas goes out to investigate the matter about these Pig Masked Men due to a string of circumstances. He eventually meets with the general of the Pig Mask army, a Masked Boy with a gun for an arm and with the ability to control lightning. Almost immediately, Lucas feels an attachment to his enemy. He cannot understand why, but the implications of this would change the path of his adventure forever.

Before going to fight Mecha-Drago, Claus went to visit the Magypsies, a mysterious race of cross-dressing psychics that live for hundreds of years. To end the incessant blabbering of the boy about his quest for revenge and how he needed to fight the Drago, the Magypsies agreed to awaken his dormant psychic powers, as they would later do for Lucas. Unbeknownst to the Magypsies, however, the PSI that Claus learns is actually PK LOVE, a secret and special PSI that can only be learned by a chosen one who can pull the seven needles. Pulling these seven needles will awaken the Dragon of Darkness that sleeps beneath Nowhere Island, and he will reflect the desires that the puller of the needles holds deepest in their heart. With Claus' death, however, it seemed that the Dragon might never awaken... but there are always those who will try to trick fate.

The leader of the Pig Mask Army had Claus reconstructed with his finest technology, using circuitry to suppress his soul and leave him a servant without will. He follows the Pig Mask leader's orders directly and exactly, executing them with deadly precision and not even letting his own brother get in his way. Claus unwillingly became the ultimate symbol of the Pig Mask's corruption of Nowhere Island. He cheated even death, and exists as an abomination of living tissue and machine parts. He is completely subservient to the Pig Mask's leader. His will stolen, he only cared for fulfilling the ambitions of the one whom he perceived to have power. Although his master would be defeated, Claus would continue attempting to fulfil his ambition, that of eradicating all living things aside from his creator, to the very end. He becomes the living embodiment of corruption and desecration of nature, and in the end, his true, pure soul would overcome the Pig Mask's corruption for just enough time to end his own dastardly path by the only way possible...

The clash of these two twins is so wonderful, and so poetic, really. The two of them serve as the perfect symbol of MOTHER 3. Their clash is the essential one of the game, nature versus corruption, what is natural and pure, versus what is self-gratifying and perverse. Lucas and Claus. Claus and Lucas. These tragic brothers can only truly represent their series together. Life and death, happiness and sadness. These two points get very emphasized in every MOTHER game, and the brothers' existence represents the duality of the series far better than any other of its characteristics. Claus and Lucas are the embodiment of love and hatred, and their confrontation and resolution make one of the most emotional and powerful stories, if not the most, of the entire videogame industry.

But I guess you guys will agree with me in few so he doesn't count.

Also, Mr. Resetti. That guy is such a courageous mole, preventing the universe from self-destruction at the cost of his reputation. What a man.

Well, he gives you the Crono clone so you can save Crono's life on Death Peak. Kind of indirect, but nonetheless important.

Interceptor always gave a nice extra attack plus sometimes blocking attacks for Shadow or Relm, so as far as FF6 goes, he's the man. Well, dog.

Crap I forgot about that :sweatdrop.

Oh yeah and that bubblegum monkey that accompanies Jeff in Earthbound. Now that monkey was a badass and if it weren't for him, Jeff wouldn't have been able to reach Ness. I sincerely hoped that he would stay in my party, but no he went for that harlot.

Speaking of harlots, what about the creepy cyborg metal-things-in-back-of-head-lady from starcraft? I always wondered who the hell she was, why she had so much stuff stuck in her head, and how she got that way. But the one thing I never doubted was how much she helped me. Always delivering messages with important news like battle plans, evacuation plans, ultimatums... ect.

Larsa from FFXII may count. I mean, he spends most of the game without being mentioned, joins your party for a bit and then in the end of the game has developed a Xanatos Roulette that makes everyone go "Wait, what?". He's 12 and has outsmarted everyone else, including the Occurians which are technically gods.
