Dead Space

Do yourself a favor. Play it alone. In a dark room. With the sound turned up. Bring a change of pants.

Not very far yet, but ho-lee shit is this game scary. Let me sum up the first ten minutes of gameplay:

La-di-da... Hey, this is pretty cool. No HUD or anything, just holograms... I wonder when I get a weapon... Oh shit! Necromorphs already? FUCK! Run, Isaac! Run like your ass is on fire and Godzilla's after you! ELEVATOR! ELEVATOR! FUCK! OPEN! CLOSE! Phew... That was- OHMYGODWHATDOIDOWHATDOIDOWHATDOIDO! I don't have a weapon! Oh, thank Jesus, I'm still alive...

If you haven't already, go buy it! Now!

I think my favorite part so far is (spoiler for Part 3) when you see like three or four of the holes that have been battering-rammed out by some sort of creature, then after you get the centrifuge running again a giant fucking tentacle bashes through the floor and grabs you, and it took me a few seconds to realize that I was actually in control. So I spent almost my entire clip of Plasma shooting wildly while being drug along the ground by a giant flesh tentacle.

But yeah, this game is incredible, go buy a copy. I think the Plasma Cutter is like my new favorite weapon, right behind the Spread Shot and Volcanic Hammer. It is immensely fun to be fighting in a zombie/mutant game where you don't get headshots and target the torso, and if you do, you will die.

I think I'm going to go make a first impressions big lengthy blog post.

I just got cut in half. And I'm happy cause it was cool. This game is like if System Shock 2 and Doom 3 had a baby, it was third person, and better than Doom 3.

I can't decide if all the live, uninfected victims going insane and doing all sorts of disgustingly horrifying shit is morbidly awesome or sensationalistically stupid.

Kim 10-16-2008 04:28 AM

I would argue the former rather than the latter, because, honestly, if you are seeing this shit and been stuck in this environment for any sort of prolonged time frame, you will probably snap. And hard. Given, you aren't necessarily going to start sawing people and yourself up for giggles, but it isn't out of the question.

Mirai Gen 10-16-2008 04:38 AM

Not even necessarily that, but like in the audiolog where the the guy got infected and started pulling out his own teeth. This game is full of all sorts of morbid, fucked up insanity stuff.

I just can't tell if the writers were trying to be all shocking and cool or if it actually adds to the feel of the game.

I may not be the best person to ask whether that is too much or whatever. I interpreted strategic dismemberment to mean stomping on every corpse I come across to make sure it can't come after me later. Even that medic chick from the beginning.

Know what?

I'm reading the backstory on this...
It's pretty damn freaky.

Mirai Gen 10-19-2008 02:11 AM

Just finished it.

Alright, criticism about the insanity thing = over. The story, by the end, makes sense. Let me reflect on it a bit and I'll have something to say.

But seriously, man, this is an incredible game. If you want to scare yourself shitless with a solid action game there's no better way.

Well, just got it today and I'm loving it. I've only gotten about three hours (and chapters) in, but so far everything has been a solid and engrossing experience.

Only problem I've had with the scariness so far is that I've been playing it on an absolutely puny tv, not quite in the dark, and with friends around me. I wanna try and play it for real one day, but it'll have to wait until I get my big tv into my college suite. It's almost painful to try and read some of the stuff in the inventory with how tiny the screen is...

But, either way, it feels like RE4 in space, with actual scares, more tension--which I think makes the game even scarier than it should be--and awesome weapons (The ripper is so cool in concept, just a little weird to use, and the plasma cutter is just awesome in general).

Now I just need to finish the game and get to a new game plus. THAT should be fun.
