Mugen!
I dont recall ever seeing a Thread about it around here, so here we go.
Anyone here eevr tried or uses this engine yet? Im not sure if this goes beyond the legal barrier of the forum rules, so i wont be posting any links until furter notice. For those of you who didnt know, Mugen is a fighting game engine for Windows and Linux, that allows you to make your own fighting games using characters and stages from other games. the current selection of characters and stages avaliable for free online are way into the thousands by now. And wit the proper Screenpack, you could add pretty much a couple hundred characters into your own custom game. So, who's playing it? |
I dunno, is there any legal controversy around it? I haven't heard of anything.
I've always been meaning to give that a try, too. (In fact just a few days ago I was thinking "man, what was that fighting game called again where you can put in hundreds of characters? I completely forgot." So, uhm, thanks!) EDIT: VV What I heard about it was you could more or less forget about any illusions of balance in this you might harbour, but it was excellent just for kicks. |
My tampering around with Mugen usually ended up with "What the hell, why is Sephiroth the most incredibly broken character ever? Oh, right. Silly me."
A cool system but god, user-driven content in a fighting game is just asking for trouble. |
It's at that point that I put Dragonclaw against some random character and watch the beauty unfold.
|
MUGEN has always disappointed me because all its characters are confined to either video games or anime. Where are my Harry Potters? What about some awesome Neo action? Maybe Asterix?
If I had any sort of spriting skills I would get on making a Freddie Mercury character. Alas, I have the artistic ability of a teaspoon. |
Im determined to make Breath fo FIre characters for this, once I can figure out how it works.
EDIT: after reading up on MUGEN and watching a few tutorials, I have switched my focus. As long as I get Ryu done, I will be happy |
It's a fun system but yeah, no balance whatsoever.. I remember how most of the characters become plain impossible to win against when played by the computer. Especially with combos that normally can't be done.

I have roughly 17+ GBs of content sitting in another hard drive. I fear that I'll never get around to really working with it. It's always fun to just pit two Lvl 8 CPU's and watch them be better than I'll ever be.
But I can't stop stockpiling characters. It's in my blood. |
Mugen is like anything else in this world, to make it worthwhile you have to work at it and sift through all the crap thats out there.
There are some amazing things on Mugen though, such as Yoko, Homer, and Ronald Mcdonald. |
I tried downloading it once but couldn't figure out how to a) make characters, b) put new characters in, or c) do anything useful whatsoever other than punches or kicks.
I'm pretty sure it's perfectly legal - I seem to remember reading somewhere that the engine is freeware. Plus, it's just funny to see Sephiroth take on Homer. |
