Doctor Who news: Stuff about the next series and beyond

First, the spoilery stuff:

He has agreed to a major role in the Time Lord’s next series after teaming up with the Doctor (David Tennant) on stage.

The pair starred in a production of Hamlet in the summer. Patrick — Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek — has been offered a role in a two-parter involving the Daleks, set to be screened next year.

The new series will also see the return of classic alien enemies the Ice Warriors and the Zygons. Patrick, 68, is a big Doctor Who admirer and has spoken in the past of his desire to star in the show.

He said: “I have been a fan, actually yes, and I’m deeply dismayed that I was never asked to be in it. I think it’s a terrific series.” A source said: “Patrick and David are firm friends now, and want to work together again. They’ve got chemistry and that’s what Doctor Who is all about.

“Patrick’s role is still being finalised but the plan is for him to play a renegade Time Lord called the Meddling Monk, who was last seen in Doctor Who in the 1960s. The Doctor thought his entire race was wiped out and gets a huge surprise to find another member of his species.”

The Monk was originally played by Carry On film favourite Peter Butterworth.
Our insider added: “Patrick’s agent is now involved and everyone is really keen. His role is a belter.”

And next, the sad news:

"In January I go back to make four new specials which take Doctor Who through to the end of 2009," he said. "But when Doctor Who returns in 2010, it won't be with me. The 2009 shows will be my last playing the Doctor."

Tennant added: "If I don't take a deep breath now and move on, I never will. I think it's best I don't outstay my welcome."

:( He's my second favourite. Above all, I'm sad Moffat won't be writing his send-off.

EDIT: Oh shit, wrong forum. Could a mod please move this to its proper place?

ooo Patrick Stewart. The Hamlet they did together was well received. I'd have preferred him as The Master mind you. Hypno Eyes!
Nooooo! David Stay!
I'm really hoping it isn't going to be Neil Morrisey. He just doesn't gel for me.

I heard somewhere that Patrick Stewart wasn't going to be playing that part but instead The leader of the Time Lords or something like that. But I could be wrong.

I am sad to hear DT is leaving tho... he was the best.

Oooo, Patrick Stewart? That'll be interesting to see.

On the other hand... seeing what that episode apparently will be about, I have to say Argh, die damn you Daleks! How many frickin' genocides will it take?! Yeah, I know they're a classic enemy, but can't they go one season without them? They're becoming crappy.

Although I am looking forwards to the Ice Warriors. I always enjoyed the Seeds of Death.

Hmm, I wonder who they're planning to get in after David Tennant?

The Sun isn't a very reliable source of information.

Plus, I mean, there's no two-parter in 2009. There's a 2008 Christmas Special, and then a three-parter 2009 Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day special miniseries.

And then David Tennant is gone, which is whom the Sun claimed Patrick Stewart would be working with.

It's probably all rubbish.

Actually, it never said he was going to be working with Tennant on the show, only that he had worked with him on stage.

It's very slippery language they used.

Patrick Stewart in Doctor Who? Is there even enough awesome in the world for something like this to be possible? Doesn't someone like Mr T have to die first so we can steal all his awesomeness to make this happen? Should be good.

As for Tennant leaving, all I can say is whoever they bring in to replace him I'll probably immediately dislike, much as I did with Tennant to begin with. I hate regenerations.

As long as they don't make a bunch of Star Trek references and jokes.
