This is a terrible trailer. We've all been over the morality discussion of World War II games, or any game that simulates an actual war in which real people we know fought. For this genre, that hard rock accompaniment to Call of Duty: World at War's launch trailer is atrocious, and I certainly hope it's not going out on television (where the trailer is much better). "NO RULES?" Is this a UFC montage? "NO FEAR?" What, we're reducing World War II to a rear-window sticker in a white trash lowrider? Where's Calvin pissing on Japan?

Sixty years later, there are men who still speak viscerally of the terror and confusion they felt, caught up in the "ONLY CHAOS" of total war. You know when you're talking to one, because they still show the signs of a man changed forever. To seek an understanding of their courage by playing a very accurate video game, that's something I could reasonably explain to them. But I'd be ashamed to watch this trailer in their presence. And no, it is not the same as the soldiers in Iraq who listened to "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" when they went off on patrol. If you need me to explain why, you're just throwing out argumentative garbage.

It doesn't make me want to buy the game, but it doesn't mean Call of Duty: World at War isn't a good one. And it doesn't mean I won't. It just means this trailer sucks. I know it begs the question of why we'd even post it, but you can't just dump that kind of nonsense on the web and not hear back about it.

So, the new recent Trailer for Call of Duty: World at War has eXXXtreme music and Powerwords to push the sale...

What you guys think? Games like this are Glorifying war? Do they even have this "Duty" to represent same shadow of the real face of war?

I for one thought the Trailer was not really tastefull... not because of the War angle, but because it was just a sucky trailer... it donset make any point towards selling "Call of Duty" or "World War 2" ... it felt more like "Far Cry meets Royal Rumble" or something like that

I don't really know what there is to say. Sucky trailer that a small few will find offensive, most likely people who want to be offended. Kotaku has a habit of blowing things out of proportion.

Habit?

It's like their bread and butter.

Should've gone "War: What is it good for?" In the title. :P

And to be honest, I agree. They're just going way out there with the assumption that games like this glorify war. Hell, to be honest, it's not that realistic... Yeah you got your acustic and visual effects, congrats. But in the end, it's just something that you can turn off when you're done. And how is owning games like this any diffrent then watching shows on the History Channel or the Military Channel when they talk about battles in WWI/II/Korea/Vietnam/Iraq. If one watches one of those and found it interesting, does that mean that they're a war nut too?

Mirai Gen 11-09-2008 04:36 PM

It seems funny to me that video games are tagged as propaganda by people who probably don't care or aren't even aware of those godawful army recruitment commercials.

They just like Ernie Pyle. :)

Seriously, I have to admit that this game doesn't look to be appealing. And with CoD being the only other viable game other than Medal of Honor for the consoles, what kind of competition do they really have?

And how many times can you tell the WWII saga? I would LOVE to see someone go to Revolutionary times or even Civil War times and make good game mechanics. Or use the same story telling devices and shoot up to more futuristic, laser battle times. I just figure, as long as people play, game companies will continue makikng WWII sequels.

I understand thinking WWII was pretty rad, learning about it is. However, I can only take so much of it before I no longer care. However, however, I've heard that they've taken many of the things that made CoD4 great and improved upon them, so we shall see how this turns out.

Which i might add... are also out of proportion via over-dramatic narration and editing

And are usually of the standard of a middling first year student.

We see so many things with WW2 as an entertainment I don't really see how this is any different.

Was I the only one who thought someone was releasing a borderline pornographic war-like game based on the number of X's in the title?

I mean I was all set to come in here and go "Aw hell, that just ain't right" and now I've kinda got nothing to work with but a bunch of idiot marketers.
