Bad Habit
I have a bad habit, or addiction might better apply, what it is is irrelevant, and I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on breaking bad habits?
I'm usually like, "Okay! I'm done! No more! I'm tired of this!" Later, I'll forget my decision to quit until afterwards, or I'll come up with the lamest justifications. Is there some way to break it. Little tricks to get yourself to stick to your guns? |
I would advise that you slowly kick the habit. Limit yourself to indulging in it a few times a week, (or a day, it depends on the habit), and slowly lower the amount you allow. Eventually, it'll be gone.

I'd argue what it is may be relevant, but that's your information to share, not mine to demand.
If it's something like chewing your nails, where it's always readily on hand and you don't think about it, they make this stuff that you paint on your nails (it doesn't show) and it tastes really bad if you try to bite them. Physical deterrents that don't hurt you are incredibly useful. Or maybe even just something that reminds you "hey, this is bad, don't." Gloves if your really desperate. If it's something like drinking or smoking, get rid of the item needed! Maybe keeping a tiny amount so you have to ration it and wean off of it. |
Cold turkey, all the way! Come on, someone had to say it.
But seriously, you just need to say "no" to whatever it is, and stick to it. It's all about the willpower. |
find a good replacement behavior. Whenever you find yourself about to perform your bad habit, do the replacement behavior instead while weaning yourself off the bad habit. Also, reward yourself for successful uses of the replacement behavior.
|
And mentally abuse yourself when you fail.
No really. It's propably better if you don't. |
Cold Turkey for the win.

I think he kinda implied that cold turkey isn't working.
I would prefer a mix of gradual weaning + replacement stuff |

But no, seriously, yeah, willpower. If it's something like drinking/smoking, get rid of the item, as previously mentioned. Full-time. It'll take less time for you to get rid of the habit, but it'll be much more intense. |
I find this helps against any addiction. Go for the full movie if needed.
