Sprite...we hardly knew ye

tell me something how many of you prefer sprite based characters over 3d ones?

Element_man 04-15-2004 04:05 PM

Depends on how good the 3-D graphics are, and the sprite bitage.

Zweihander 04-15-2004 04:14 PM

I prefer well-drawn sprites over clunky 3D models. In fact, I prefer well-made sprites and 3D models over crappy sprites and 3D models.

Some old sprites are good, but most old sprites (NES, early SNES) were bad. Only good NES sprite I can think of are the ones from River City Ransom. But 3D models look better then sprites overall (It's hard to compare a sprite to Ryu Hayabusa or Auron).

For me, it all depends on the game.

I think that sprites are better suited to crazy/silly/hectic games out there, such as Metal Slug, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Giga Wing.

However, sports, action, and 1st-person shooter games (among others) benefit from 3-D so much that using sprites wouldn't really be a plausible idea. I mean, could you imagine Halo or NFL Street with sprites? I didn't think so.

But Ryu Hayabusa original started out as a sprite...

Anyway, I am also one to agree it depends. However, for some reason I find Celes of FFVI to be far more attractive than Yuna or Rikku of FFX. I think I'm drawn to sprites more due to the fact that they have that anime-look to them. I mean, when people draw H-stuff of Tifa, I like it better than the FMV graphics. Same holds true for Biko 3. But, this isn't the place to type about H-stuff.

Yeah, I kinda prefer sprites over 3D models. Unless the 3D models are cel-shaded, and done so nicely(Dark Cloud 2). I'm still disgruntled about the X-Men: Next Dimension game, after all.

And, as Brian stated, there's hardly anything in modern games that couldn't be achieved if they were 2D sprite games.

Tehe, Tifa H-pics. <3

I always liked sprites. And it's possible to integrate sprites and 3D simply enough, for instance in Ragnarok Online. It might not be perfect but it's damn close. Very well made if I do say so myself. And I prefer cartoony stuff to way uber realistic stuff.

please tell me the unspoken H does not stand for hentai... please?

Flarecobra 04-16-2004 06:29 AM

'fraid so Storm.

And like it was mentioned before, it depends on the game.

Forever let it be known that dirty anime shall wear the brand of the crimson H. And it was so.

I like sprites.. Especially River City Ransom ones like IHMN said. I mean, they were used again and again in games, like the one my avatar comes from! It doesn't seem like a lot of effort goes into 3d models sometimes, though they're getting better with the before mentioned Ninja Gaiden holding point.

I don't know about any of you, but I like cel shading too. It gives a game a more enjoyable visionary sensation.
