New to Anime, Suggestions?
New too anime, first watched anime unleashed on Tech TV, then a freind gave me Cowboy Bebop. Anyway, I was just wondering what are the good ones, so i don't get burnt out on suckiness.

well, i'd suggest neon genesis evangelion and the end of evangelion instead of the last two episodes on the 8th dvd (man were those two episodes horible), serial experiments lain (it's really weird which why i think it's really good), and samurai x trust & betrayal (really one movie it's just broken into two parts when released in the US plus it ends on a sad note), the motion picture, and reflection (also ends on a sad note so to speak)

A couple popular series would be Trigun, Hellsing, Gundam Wing.
Movies: Princess Mononoke, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D. Most anyone who watches anime has seen these. |
Hm, newbie-friendly anime. . .
Series: Cowboy Bebop (which you already have) Trigun (a western) Berserk (don't watch if you get squeamish easily) Hellsing (utterly badass) Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (IMO you should avoid Reflections) Evangelion (one hell of a mind**ck) FLCL (Single most **cked up non-pornographic animated thing ever produced by humanity.) Serial Experiments Lain (not newbie-friendly, but then again, it's not anything-friendly, also a mind**ck) Excel Saga (Hit or miss. Download a few episodes before spending money) GTO (again, download a few episodes to see if you like it) Movies: Ninja Scroll (a good, violent classic) Ghost in the Shell (a good, more cerebral classic) Akira (a good, violent, and cerebral classic) Anything by Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, etc.) Cowboy Bebop the Movie (duh) End of Eva (strongly recommended instead of the last two episodes of the series if you decide to watch Eva) Grave of the Fireflies (wonderful, but the most depressing movie I've ever seen) That should keep you busy for a while. BTW, if you're over the age of thirteen you should avoid anything with "Dragonball" in its title like the plague. |
I say get manga; it's cheaper, and usually goes in-depth to the story of the anime series. Or, in the case of Cowboy Bebop, offers more stories to tell.
My personal preference is Love Hina. ::Hears people start whispering about the big, bad, Otaku's favorite anime is a shoujo:: Hey, shut in there, will ya!? Don't let people rave you just because Love Hina's a "girl's anime." It's as much for boys, too, what with all the fanservice provided(the manga provides more, but eh). I even wrote about it the "Best Anime Ever"(title may be wrong, but it's close) thread. So, I definately recommend that one. I strongly don't recommend DragonBall Z because Cartoon Network sucked the life out of it, and for reasons I stated in the above-mentioned thread. Project A-ko is another anime you should look into. It's old, and it's probably the pre-Love Hina anime stereotype; all stereotypes are hit up here(including males wearing superheroine skimpy clothing...but don't let that driveyou away!), but beware of the pseudo-lesbian-pedophile references. Ghost in the Shell, and I'm not typing that to be hip. The story combined with the beautiful anime/CG scenes maks this fascinating. In fact, unless you have the DVD and look at the "Making Of" segment, you wouldn't be able to tell where a good 75% of the CG takes place. On that note, stay away from Armitage: Dual-Matrix and Sol Bianca; both had anime and CG combined, and it just didn't look right. Sorry, but when an anime's craptastic effects keep me from paying attention to the actual story, I strong disrecommend it. However, Armitage III(OVA) is strongly recommended. I also recommend Armitage III: Poly-Matrix, but not as strongly; you get more footage out of the OVA and the true ending to the series, but if your attention span doesn't last longer than 90 minutes and/or you don't care about the real ending, go for Poly-Matrix. (Note: A movie's voice-actors should have nothing to do with the popularity of the movie) X is a must, actually. It's Clamp's "best work." I recommend you watch the movie fist to get a feel for what's going on, but the movie can be really confusing. So, after you're done watching the movie, watch the series. The series will better-explain the movie. And Akira is a must only because all true, hardcore anime fans have seen it. I personally didn't like it a whole lot, but I saw it because, in order to be accepted into the realm of true Otakuism, it's a must. Edit: Please note that the above references are scattered across various anime genres, so it should give you a feel for what it is you're looking for. The only genre I didn't cover was the pervert genre, because I don't think I can on this board. Besides, I don't know your age, and so I wouldn't want to be corrupting a minor. |
I can tell you what to watch out for... anything that is labled "Naughty Tenticle"

Inuyasha is kinda newb friendly. That's my favorite. Tenchi Muyo is good (but if your young watch out for the uncensored version). Yu Yu Hakasho is good if you like animes that fight a lot and aren't DBZ. Ruroni Kenshin is good too. Big O might take a while to get into, but its worth it.

3X3 eyes, 88 Black Magic (..I know that's not the title..but maybe someone can correct me.), and Psycho Diver are good.
3X3 eyes is a demon anime 88 Black Magic is a partial mech anime. Psycho Diver is a violent, brain mashing anime (but still followable.). |
Another good anime for beginners are all three of the Slayers series.
Slayers-Not as good as the other two but still good. Slayers Next-It might very well be the best of the three. Slayers Tri-If it isin't as good as Next, its very close to it. Try it. Its what got me hooked on anime, and its entertaining and sutible for most ages. |
