BUTTS

Bartz Klauser

【Concept】

"Utility Player/Arrange Player"
His style is designed for those who like trial and error, but when he's able to link Tidus and Cloud's combos together, being original doesn't matter when those are the perks of taking the path of the the "Mime." He fights using the techniques of his fellow warriors of Cosmos. As such, he combines their various skills into his own fluid arrangement of attacks. And the skills of the "Mime" allow him to change those skills easily. Furthermore, when he has an attack ability equipped, such as "Jump +1" he will gain special skills and further benefits than the others would not. Not only is he constantly changing skills and weapons, he also vocally mimics the characters they come from.

【Position and Personality】

Guided by the winds of adventure, Bartz is a young man who engages in freewheeling travel. His very character exemplifies freedom. He needs to be convinced to follow a single path, but he will not be silent when he encounters injustice. Also, he is very inquisitive, and has the ability to find the bright side no matter what crisis he finds himself in. He is competing with Zidane to see who will find the Crystals first.

【EX Info】

EX-Mode Effect: 3 Stars float above his head, the symbols of a job master. His cape turns red.

EX-Mode Bonus: No name given. Although he doesn't gain any special power-ups, pressing R + Square will give him access to special a attack.

EX-Burst: "Rapid Fire Dual-Wield Spell Blades" He kicks off to fly into the air, accompanied by the cry of an unseen chocobo, as each of his companion's swords are empowered with magic to attack with in turn, ending with all of the swords blending together into the "Brave Blade" for the final slash. Two directional buttons are shown at time as part of the sequence to be pressed, and you need to follow all of them to succeed. If you make a mistake or the deadline passes then the attacks will be cut off.

Exdeath

【Concept】

"Guard Counter/Press Defender"
His movement speed is slow, almost bordering on the point of being humorous*. To counter this, he does have warp spell to bring him in closer to his opponent. "When you can, use Air Dash," is a bit of advice given, though why the term "when you can" is used is rather odd since you'll want to use it often. When it comes to this "tortoise" gathering EX-Cores is terribly difficult, and can only be counter-acted by raising his Luck attribute (It effects how close to you EX-Cores will appear). You can use counter-attacks after first using a guard skill, while the guard is still in place, and many attacks can only be used after mastering defense. This character already has peculiar strengths, but his Brave attacks are certainly strong, hinting the ability to easily Break his opponents if the destructive power of his guard and counter skills is utilized properly. Unique amongst the characters, guarding against his opponents is his strength, something which can be combined with his HP attacks as a counter. These strategies are summed up with quotes from the staff such as, "He has a variety of guard skills, which when used precisely, can make him impervious to all attacks," "He may be the character that tests the player's skills the most," "He may be invincible if you can master him."

*Actually, it's already humorous.

【Position and Personality】

Original a tree in the Great Forest of Moore, a vicious heart was created within Exdeath from the souls of demons and the necromancer king, Enuo, transforming him into a dark warlock who wished to manipulate the power of the "Void." Though he has a haughty attitude, he is self-conscious in his decision to appear to be just another member of the troops of Chaos, and stands to stop the warriors of Cosmos from obtaining the Crystals.

【EX Info】

EX-Mode Effect: Takes the tree form of his second-to-last battle. His armor becomes dark blue, and the lower half of his body is covered in a strange bark.

EX-Mode Bonus: No name given. The gap between using guard commands is reduced, and his counter attacks become stronger.

EX-Burst: "The laws of the universe mean nothing!" His opponent is throw into the limitless power of the Void. The O button is held to decrease his gauge, and if you stop when it reaches 0, "Neo Almagest" will be cast. When input incorrectly, the power of nothingness does not reach its full potential, and instead he sets his sights on his opponent to send out bullets of darkness in the form of "Grand Cross," which is inferior to "Neo Almagest."

I find it weird that Exdeath would reconcile himself to be just a low trooper of Chaos. Bad fanfiction am confirmed once again.

I wonder if by "mimicking vocally" Bartz says the same quotes as his companions or if their voices are heard instead of his. Either way, Mimes are awesome and so is Buttocks.

You forgot Chaos characters rankings, mudah:

Quote:

Garland - 71.1 overall

"The hand is quick but the legs are slow" - 70
His attacks require a lot of memorization, and you need both initiative and creativity for him. Just swinging wildly is last thing you want to do! And it should be noted that the targeting on his HP attacks are user-friendly.

"He's got slow feet..." - 65
I was so uneasy while playing as him - whatever you want to call it, he's still damn slow. Should I really feel like hiding behind a column when I have a character gliding over me?

"Even hardcore players are puzzled" - 80
He is so heavy with his armor and transforming sword, he moves slowly. But on the other side of things, I would recommend him for hardcore players. The way he drags that sword along is like poetry in motion.

Emperor - 76.3 overall

"Blood Sword users* need not apply" - 69
I guess he's the same guy who tormented Firion. His role as a trap maker in battle is very peculiar though. But, hearing "Ungaahhhh!"** set me at ease.

* Using the Blood Sword is considered to be the cheap way to kill Mateus, so some fans look down on those who followed that strategy.
** Here's something else to know about the FFII Japanese fandom - they love Mateus' death cry. It's like their "spoony bard" line. It's the name of his online fanclub. And it helps that it's far funny than the English version, essentially being romanticized as "Uboar."

"Watch that Flare" - 80
You find that when you have a Flare spell following after an opponent, they're not so bold in attack you. When playing as the Emperor, what some people would call mean instead feels so satisfying.

"For those with the blood of a strategist!" - 80
He has an interesting passive strategy with how he lays out traps behind him. His degree of difficult is top class, but he has his own type of fun. Opponents who try to run away will be slaughtered...

Cloud of Darkness - 85 overall

"Can you get drunk on sexy?" - 100
With that body and Ikeda Masako's voice, she is certainly a sexy character. From the green skin to the tentacles, and how she shoots her wave cannons, she has a high fidelity to the original.

"She's Number 1 in looking erotic" - 80
I really lept at her performance. She was the first one I started really leveling. And when she wins, it's fun to watch her tentacles make that zigzagging motion.

"You notice that wiggle..." - 85
(Sorry, first sentence is eligible) Her techniques change depending upon the timing of your button presses, and it is sometimes hard to find the right rhythm, so practice with her is required. She is for advanced players.

Golbez - 66.7 overall

"Attack rapidly!" - 90
Since he casts off short and long distance attacks at the same time, you can attack without worrying about where your opponent is. He looks tough, but beginners can use him.

"Aim to make fireworks!" - 60
His body his so big it takes up a lot of your field of vision. As it is, his attacks resemble fireworks soaring towards his enemies and bursting in the air, and that is exhilarating. It's just launching them in the right direction that's the problem.

"He's strong when you understand him?" - 50
With so many warping skills and combos, he is a very technical character. Entering his EX-Burst commands can be hard. But, Takeshi Kaga's voice does have that aura of refined masculinity.

Exdeath - 53.3 overall

"Nerve-wracking, totally nerve-wracking" - 50
I was so worried, I had no idea how to fight with him. As far as walking goes, he is so super slow that his skills feel like they're all defensive. If you want to test if you've mastered this game, then use him.

"Walk gracefully dammit!" - 30
His motions are so painful slow. You mainly have to rely upon his countering attacks, so it takes a maniac fan to use him. But he is strong if you master him. ...surely...

"Use him after the second-half of the game" - 80
Yes, he walks slowly, and its difficult to guard, so he is really hard for beginners to use. But, in comparison to the other characters, his EX-Burst is the best.

Kefka Palazzo - 93.3 overall

"He is my character!" - 100
He's so fantastic! How he treats everyone with contempt with his words and actions, I was even floored by the names of his techniques. He's not only funny, but is also a very effective character.

"Surprising and easy to use!" - 90
The paths the attacks take are unique, so you need to have tracking skills to be able to attack easily. I completely adore Chiba's performance, and you should try him out at least once!

"Such a great sense of the character" - 90
Since the same joking manner and techniques from the original game are faithfully recreated here, Kefka fans would be bereft not to use him! He even skips while fighting.

Sephiroth - 85 overall

"Slash, slash, slash some more!" - 80
With his long reach, you need to judge the right distance when approaching your opponent. Though the HP attack "Prison Gate"* is not exactly user-friendly, it does inflict a great deal of damage.

*If you don't remember, this is the official name for the attack he killed Aerith with. Somehow, that made this comment funnier to me because I have a sick sense of humor sometimes.

"He was awkward when I played with him..." - 80
Isn't that long reach unfair!? I guess the attack lag makes up for it. He is a real threat when you're fighting against him, but using him is a different story. He takes a lot of skill.

"For those FF7 lovers!" - 95
In fact just using Sephiroth gives me butterflies in my stomach. Even if it is unavoidable that some people will consider the super-long reach of the Masamune an unfair advantage.

Ultimecia - 76.7 overall

"Even without obstacles..." -75
On a complicated map, her magic tends to run uselessly into walls, and she's not the easiest character to approach your opponent with. She is one that requires elaborate tactics.

"Attacks with a long reach?" -70
Her appearance is glamorous. Her rapid fire attacks feel like a rain of bullets, and I would recommend her for people who want to level a character. She is comparativel easy to use then.

"But she can't beat the Cloud of Darkness' boobs" - 85
She has a lot of long-distance attacks, so she can easily attack an enemy without approaching. However, she is weak in close quarters combat. And yah, she has a great rack.

Kuja - 83.3 overall

"Lots of indecent magic attacks" - 70
Since his magic changes depending upon his distance to the opponent, so you need to be flexible. Since he moves differently than other characters, getting used to him could be a problem?

"He's basically an escape artist?" - 85
He's a character that walks his own path. Since he is always flying around there is no reason to care about "falling." But with a character like this, don't call him chicken.

"Here comes the narcissist" - 95
When a character's voice matches them perfectly it pumps me up while fighting. "Ultima" and "Flare Star" and other techniques from the original game look great here.

Jecht - 91.7 overall

"Charge attacks take courage" - 85
Rushing into close-quarters combat is the heart of his techniques. I want to him to check people into walls. And charge attacks are hot. And you can stop and fight in the air.

"What a mighty good man!" - 100
He's so proactive on the attack - Brave attacks, HP attacks, all do well by him, but you win or lose depending on timing. And incurring explosive amounts of damage feels so good.

"Tough guy motions!" - 90
Powerful attacks are what he is all about, and he is hard for beginners to face off against. But, those manly motions of his are so cool!

That's one thing that strikes with me despite my anger at what Square has become nowadays. It's a fanservice game, you should have not expected more.

Right now I'm just waiting for the game to show up. Well-dressed, cool... Can't tell if it is the shit, or just plain ol' shit. Yes, so it's styling, fast, agressive, and packing heat, badabing! Or at least it is supposed to be. But who knows? Could kick arse. Could be dangerous! It could totally suck.

Whaddaya say bro? Let's see how far we can take this. Any self-respecting leading man would do the same.

Of course we're going to see how far we can take this. I'm actually interested to see where this leads. This is perhaps one of the riskiest ventures in video gaming history*, as the potential fan base being affected ranges across ancient, old, and modern player generations, while trying to appeal to as many of those gamer generations as possible by creating a fun and innovative game. I applaud square for this, and so far it looks like they are going to succeed. I've seen all the hype, I've read all the news, now all I want is to hear people tell me how it feels to play. The ease of playability is the last defining factor that could turn this genius idea into either a complete success worthy of sequels and songs and rewards, or a disappointing cash cow which will no doubt none-the-less develop a dedicated cult following.

The Wizard Who Did It 12-14-2008 01:51 PM

Genius? Am I the only one who, when he first saw this, just saw Squeenix trying their hand at Super Smash Bros with their characters? I mean, it's got it's own style and all, but it seems as if most of it's innovation has a helping hand from Nintendo.

Of course, maybe I just don't understand the combat system as well as I think I do.

That said, I can't honestly get hyped at this for the sole reason that I don't have a PSP and I don't want one.

EDIT: I didn't even see RT's first sentence in the goddamn quoted text in Lord Setheris' post. Wow.

I finally got explained what the Command Battle System is.

There's another mystery solved! Call me the king of scrubs!

I suggest you read the link posted above for details on the battle system. This is as detached from Smash as it can get.

Okay, this is what I meant (bear with me is I suck at fighting games, and therefore do not know much about the genre as a whole). What I meant was it seems to copy SSB by having a secondary goal.

As a summary for my understanding of the archaic Fighter game. Your goal is to decrease the enemies hitpoints to 0 with attacks, and in some games you can knock them out of the ring to win also.

In SSBM, your goal is to knock them out of the ring. Rather than dealing the damage being the central method through which you win, the central method is having the opponent essentially "ring out". As an addendum, as you get better at the game, you need to "damage" the enemy less to kill them. Therefore, you have a central goal, and a secondary means that helps you reach that goal.

In Dissidia, the main goal is again to decrease the enemies HP to zero. However, you help accomplish this by fighting with your opponent over this stat called "brave". As your brave stat gets higher (and I guess as theirs gets lower), you have an easier time killing them, much as doing more damage in SSB means you can kill them easier. This makes the brave battle a secondary battle going on, much in the same way that the damage battle is a secondary battle going on in SSB.

Kim 12-14-2008 02:25 PM

Then you could say that games that have a Rage meter, or the special meter in Street Fighter are being ripped off by Smash Bros.

Can you control the character seperately like in FFXII or not?
