D&D Character Build for Fighter McWarrior
I'm not sure if this is the right place for it but, o well-
So, a friend of mine is starting up a campaign, and I wind up missing the first meeting. I didn't bother to create a character, since I knew I would miss it and told him to let me know who everyone is so I can create someone that fits in. Well, due to the setting and the fact that everyone is a magic user- they are in serious need of a fighter, or some other melee skull bashing BAMF. Now, I usually play as a cleric, or a monk; and have played as a fighter once (human chain- fighter, template from Twinkin' out, lol); and a Khorn Berserker a few times (blood for the blood god!). So I know how to create/use these guys. As I was thinking what to do, an idea came to me- "sword- chucks, yo!" needless to say I knew it was a sign from the heavens, and immediately set to work busting out my 3.5 books. As an avid reader since comic 150, I eagerly jumped to it. Then it hit me- if I was going to create Fighter, I had no idea where to start. So I come to you, the loyal readers of 8-bit theatre for help. I humbly beg that you bestow upon me your auspicious wisdom and guidance in creating one of the more amusing characters from this great web comic. Here's what I got so far: Class & Level: Fighter & lvl 1 Alignment: LG Religion/ Diety: ?Swords? / Dr. Swordopolis Height/Weight: ?/? Ability Scores: Str, Dex, Con, and Wisdom should be highest (at least +2 modifier) with average charisma, and obviously low intelligence. Recommendations for actual stats? Feats: Two weapon fighting +++; Weapon Focus +++; Power Attack ++; Improved Bull Rush & Overrun; Combat Reflexes; Exotic Weapon Proficiancy (sword chucks, lol); not sure if there are any moer or what oder to get them though, since we're starting at level 1. Skills/Ranks in: ??? Thanks in advance tl;dr making Fighter in D&D, halp |
Honestly, for this I would go Warblade (ToB: Bo9S). The Iron Heart and Stone Dragon disciplines have a number of manoeuvres which would sync nicely with your concept, and the Warblade is like the fighter, but better. Alternatively you could go Crusader (Same book), but it doesn't work as nicely mechanically IMO. Fits the class change to Knight better, however.

I would say Fighter might actually have a pretty decent intelligence and a pitiful wisdom score. Its obviously hazy as the character is all over the map as suits the funny, but that seems the more accurate representation.

Figures, I have Sword and Fist... looked at the online preview though- you're right about Warblade = Fighter (character) and being greater than fighter (class)
Seeing how 3.5 books are getting increasingly harder to find, let's work with what I got (all 3.5 of course): Player's Handbook 1 DM's Guide 1+2 Sword and Fist gonna go look for a torrent, sshhhhhhhh *edit* @Jay- nah, fighter isn't smart- though interrupted by moments of sheer brilliance. This led me to conclude fight is knowledgeable (wisdom) but can't apply the knowledge do to his inherent stupidity |
The first thing to do would be to template a variation of sword chucks that your DM allows. Would yoru DM be amenable to creating new weapons or are we limited to sourcebook weapons?
|
He'd be open providing I can make a good case for it; this is only his second time DMing, but he knows the rules pretty tightly.

Just dual-wield swords except make mention that there's a length of chain connecting them, and that there's no in-game effect.
Spin a tale of finding a wandering monk who had a pair of nunchauku that whirled like the wind, and that was when it hit you. |

I think you can find some versions of homebrewed swordchucks in older threads on this forum. I wouldn't make it the incredible superweapon that automatically crits you on a natural 1 like everyone seems to do, though; if you make it basically two longswords and give it some reach like a spiked chain you should be good to go. Probably shouldn't be vastly more powerful than either weapon on its own. |
Raise the damage of the spiked chain in return for dropping it's special disarm/trip capabilities? The sword-chuck seems to have a short length of chain between relatively long swords for it to be used in more contemporary chained-sword fashion like this. Personally, I think it's a weapon more suited for a different system, as DnD does whacky fighting styles pretty poorly.
It'd still work pretty well however, if you're willing to drop the silliness in regards to a critical fumble table, which is silly considering it'll come up more than 1% of the time by default. The overpowering point of the spiked chain is mainly it's synergy with trip/disarm, a variable reach longsword really isn't anything too crazy. I'd suggest giving it a 20/3x critical rate in favor of the sword's 19-20/2x also, as it seems to fall more into that Axe-level craziness. |
well, I just accidently the entire 3.5 edition so here's what I'm thinking, for the sake of simplicity:
Fighter pre- sword chucks. Just let him dual wield longs swords (or short, the comic doesn't specify) So I'm looking at this now: how should his ability scores play out, and what skills and feats would fighter have? any 3.5 edition book can be referenced to, though lets keep it in the realm of the players hand book, Tome of Battle, and Sword and Fist. thanks guys- while I really think sword chucks would be awesome, I'd rather not go that into it. |
