Frank Miller: A man and his whores
You know how it goes. You tie Frank Miller to a typewriter and ask him to write a female character who isn't a prostitute. You hold a gun to his head. He writes WHORESWHORESWHORESWHORESWHORESWHORES. It's hilarious. But is it true? I decided to take a look at all the female characters in his works that I could think of and see what their professions are. Thus:
In Sin City we find all the following dames: Goldie: Whore! This doesn't start well. Wendy: Pimp. Yeah, she's the boss of Old Town, and from what we can see not whore. Nancy: Striptease dancer; perfectly chaste. (Except for Hartigan.) Not whore. Gail: Enforcer; not whore. Miho: Bodyguard/samurai/contract killer. Try finding any hint she even has time for whoring. Molly: Whore doctor. Okay, that's not a real job. She's just a doctor, as far as we can see. Esther: Actress, unemployed. Not whore. Ava: Whore. While it would be tempting to give her an impressive title like Machivellian puppetmaster, she sleeps with people for money and various services, and that's what we call whoring. Delia: Pneumatic nymphomaniac. I mean assassin. Honestly, she only sleeps with everyone before killing them for funsies. Not whore. Mariah: Mob hitman. Not whore. Maxine: Doctor, not whore. Becky: Secret undercover agent for the mob. Psych! Whore. Lucille: Lawyer/parole officer. Smoking lesbian notwithstanding, not a whore. Claire: Head shrinker; not whore. Mrs. Marv: I'm guessing old age pensioner. Totally not whore, anyway. Kadie: Bar owner and perpetrator of large numbers of perfectly illegitimate business enterprises; not whore. Josie: Bar waitress. Not whore. Yawn. Shellie: Also bar waitress. Also not whore. Sally: Totally professional whore. Nameless Woman Who Orders A Hit On Herself: No clues given. We are forced to consider her not whore until proven guilty. Mary: Nun. (Not whore.) Maeve: Freelancing terrorist or whatever. Anyway, not whore. Dallas: Whore, ostensibly. Eileen: Housewife, presumably. Probably not whore. Tammy: Nurse/whore. Amy: Serial killer/daddy's sex toy/whatever. It's creepy. But not whorey. Peggy: Full-time drunk, apparently. Faded prima donna, if you will. Not whore. Desperate Cop: Well, cop. So yeah, not whore. Carmen and Daisy: Twofer whores. Besides Sin City there are but a few: That Oracle In 300: Slave, not whore. The Unnamed Queen Of Sparta: Whore. Robin: Girl wonder. So not whore. Elektra: Assassin. (Not whore.) Wonder Woman: Hopefully not whore. Kara: Superhero, not whore. (That's Superman's and Wonder Woman's daughter in Dark Knight Strikes Again in case you're wondering.) In a final analysis, that's nine out of 35, that I know of. Not too bad for a writer working mostly in a fictional whore capital of America of his own making. It's not that I have anything against whores, I like whores, I think it's shitty how we as a society vilify whores just because of ancient patriarchal tradition. I just want to point out the rumors of Frank Miller's obsession with whores is exaggerated. Also I was bored. |
Good call, although I think the WHORESWHORESWHORES thing is more meant to be a jab on how apparently everything Miller writes is gritty and violent in a very specific way. I'll leave it to someone else to decide why, if you're trying to distill someone's writing style into one word, you'd choose the one that vilifies prostitutes. I want to point out that I just tried to do the same for Garth Ennis and immediately thought "gaysex." I dunno, maybe "violence" is just too unspecific and it's the next best thing.
(Warren Ellis: "internet", Neil Gaiman: "fanfic") |
Actually you forgot Catwoman ala Year One and Dark Knight Returns, whom is in fact a whore, and Black Canary ala All-Star Batman, whom had sex with Batman while in costume right after beating a bunch of criminals up and is, therefore, very much a whore.
Still, there's plenty of things to hate on Frank Miller about, I don't see why WHORESWHORESWHORES shouldn't be one of them. EDIT: Quote:
It seems especially silly when compared to Moore who did it tastefully; just one quick set of panels of Rorschach walking in the red light district. Plus I think when Shortpacked makes fun of you, people remember. |
to be fair, none of those characters Seems at ALL positive,so, whore they may not be, but the certainly are bad.

Frank, what are your thoughts on the subject? http://dietrichthrall.files.wordpres...ank-miller.jpg I'm glad you asked, Fifth! Quote:
No it doesn't refer to their literal field of employment, it refers to that Miller's writing style (and anything he himself has ever had to say on the subject) makes it pretty clear that scrawled somewhere across the festering pit that is Miller's booze-ravaged mind in enormous block letters are the words WOMEN = WHORES WHO WHORE. ALSO, BITCHEZ. I mean hey is the huge-titted nazi with swastikas on her nipples who works for the Joker in All-Star Batman and Robin technically, as strictly defined a whore? I dunno, probably not. When Miller came up with her did he think to himself "FUCK YES TITS NAZI WHOOOOOOOOOORES UNGH UNGH UNGH"? I'd bet fucking money on it. |
just for the sake of avoiding confusion.... i belive we all agree on what a "Whore" is in the comic unniverse? Because i cant really say i see the outline of that clearly

When we say WHOREWHOREWHORE, we mean slut, not prostitute. And almost all of his women are sluts.
