Suggest a Present Thread

NPF, I come to you for aid.

I'm completely bloody terrible at choosing gifts, especially for my girlfriend. I mean, I have zero skill at choosing this kind of thing. Hence, I need suggestions! Something that will show what a wonderful guy I am at choosing presents ;)

Stuff you might need to know:
- She loves music. Classical especially, although some modern stuff. Jazz too.
- Plays bassoon, flute, and alto sax
- Not into much other nerd-stuff
- Loves movies, but has most of the ones I could buy for her
- Things I'm thinking: a nice piece of clothing accompanied by some sort of bath scent and some flowers. Opinions?

Clothing is not very Girlfriendly... and flowers/bath stuff is more something for Valentine's day... but most important, what's your budget?

Right from the top of my head, reading what you just said... i would say that a Silverish-looking necklace with a Sax pendant (maybe with both your initials in the back) would be just about right. Or a flute pendant, would work too... earings to match are optional, but good. Specially if you can afford pearl earrings.

If you're unsure of what to buy her, perhaps you could use a skill you possess? Can you draw/sing/play an instrument/anything else creative? In my experience in regards to getting gifts for other halves, doing something she isn't expecting/that is unique will leave more fonder memories than a more material gift. Plus all they usually end up costing is your time and effort.

This could range to making something, making a short film or serenading her whilst wearing a ridiculous outfit playing the only five chords you know properly on a guitar.

Also maybe presents with in jokes or past experiences you've had together, this one is a bit harder for us to do as we have no idea what you two are like!

But the gifts you've suggested seem pretty safe, if she's into Classical I could suggest perhaps buying her music by the likes of Gustav Holtz or some Tchiakohsky. If you wish to slip in something a bit Geeky without her being none the wiser, go find The Final Fantasy - Celtic Moon Collection. There are some pleasant songs on there. (Then again Classical itself is a very broad term!)

Ignore the first token of advice if you buy her a helicopter or anything, as that would be pretty sweet.

Sorry, other things I should have mentioned:

Budget is < $100. Within that I'm pretty flexible. As to jewellery: I've bought her enough jewellery at this point to...shit, I don't have any witty statements about jewellery. The point is, we've both decided that it's time for me to get something other than jewellery. That being said, maybe a jewellery box?

Corel; unfortunately my creative and musical talents fell to a flat when I stopped playing the trumpet; I don't even have one any more. The Holtz piece is actually a stellar idea; we went to the local symphony rendition of the same, and I must say, it was out of this world ;) (Oh god shoot me). Ok, so, some music.

Another idea just suggested to me: a stuffed animal. She's a bit of a collector; in addition, she loves dogs, but her apartment won't let her have any.

What about a couple of these? I'd mix-and-match, but the idea is a litter of puppies. Or I could go with one of these. The folks over at Real Life Comics think very highly of them; the issue is would it make it to Canada in time? Bloody hell.

I'm really bad at second-guessing on these things. What do you think?

BTW go to windows movie maker, make a slideshow of photos of the both of you together and splash "more than words" as the background song. There... you made her cry

Well, if she's an alto sax player, you could always get her the album Something Else by Cannonball Adderly. It's a classic jazz album, kinda like a ''must have'' for jazz musicians. Either that or Kinda Blue by Miles Davis (it also features Cannonball on it, and John Coltrane on Tenor Saxophone:D).

This is a win-win-win, she either loves it for it being touching, loves it for being so cheesy and I love it for it makes Bellsouth Minion shed tears. Do this!

That seems pretty cute; I'd order sooner rather than later if you want it to arrive on time. I wouldn't worry too much about what you actually get here in the end. Gifts are gifts and I'm sure she'll love whatever you give her!

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't go with the bath scent. Bath scents/(cheap)perfume/etc are what anyone gets you who doesn't know what to get you, unless there's something she really likes and you think she would really like that kind of thing. It all depends on the person, I suppose.

I think a stuffed animal would be really cute, since you said she loves them, you can never go wrong with a cute stuffed animal.

You say she plays those instruments, perhaps some sheet music from her favorite movie? Maybe I'm a nerd, but I always loved being able to play the music from my favorite movies on my clarinet. Although if she's not super crazy about her instrument outside of wherever she plays them, then it might not be that great of an idea.

Eltargrim 12-18-2008 06:48 PM

Hokay.

I ordered one of the squishables express, hoping it'll get here in time. I'll pick up the CDs over the weekend (And pray that they still have them in stock). Bellsouth, you're a genius. Starting to work on that now. I just hope I have 4 minutes worth of photos available. In the event that the squishable doesn't make it in time, I'll get a box that was sized for it, get a photo of the squishable from their site, and fill one with the other.

Geniuses, all of you. Geniuses. Thanks very much.

Go to build-a-bear, and build her a really cute doll (it'll cost easily 50 bucks to get her a nice one).

(unless you already got one)
