Head south!

Save puppies!

Krylo 01-02-2009 11:00 PM

We... just came from there.

You fail at voting.

Also: I'm pretty sure I have a good way to do the police station without compromising Lucy's current personality, so don't worry about that in so much as your voting goes.

Just what you'd rather see next.

Edit: P.S. Voting is currently tied. Six and Six for north and west (Germantown and then Scrapyard and Arefu, respectively). Next update will be on Monday or Tuesday (my days off this week). If it remains tied, my own vote will be for Germantown/North. I only count my vote if it's a tie breaker, though.

Telephalsion 01-03-2009 07:32 AM

I quote diablo 2 and the village people: Go west.

Diablo 2 was about going East. I therefore conclude that you are voting to stay where we are now!

PhoenixFlame 01-03-2009 10:08 AM

North! Because, well... I have an idea why Krylo wants that.

Rokrin 01-03-2009 09:01 PM

Voting North as well. Hopefully that throws it over.

Youwantmilliondollar?! 01-04-2009 03:32 AM

Wesssssssst.

greed 01-04-2009 05:52 AM

I say west to Arefu, it'll work with the story better. Also having her meet that drug making ghoul would be a nice believable start for her down the evil path if we're going that way.

MasterOfMagic 01-04-2009 05:54 AM

North! Just because she encounters a horde of mutants doesn't mean she has to engage and slaughter them all. Maybe they'll want to play chess. :D

I fail at quoting.

To the west, there might be cowboys there!

The Argent Lord 01-04-2009 08:46 PM

I say west, too. Mutant-fighting sounds unlike her.

Fenris 01-04-2009 09:23 PM

I'm actually a big fan of Lucy being mostly neutral with slightly evil tendencies, as she has now. I don't really want her to turn into a psychotic maniac, Krylo is too talented of a storyteller to use a cliche fully evil character. I am rather enjoying reading her as she is now.

And I think I would enjoy seeing how she, as she is now, handles the super mutants.

Sir Pinkleton 01-04-2009 11:10 PM

Yeah, I vote that she goes North. Maybe she'll spy on the Super mutants to see just what they are? That's what I thought to do when I first played anyway, so it's how I would justify her going there.

MasterOfMagic 01-04-2009 11:38 PM

That's what I'm sayin'. its no fun to only have her encounter things she can handle easily.

Krylo 01-04-2009 11:58 PM

Anyway, I actually played through it earlier and am putting together the post.

I am tired as el fucko, though, so it might not be finished until tomorrow.

We went to the cop shop.

But that doesn't justify not getting the fuck out as soon as you see one. I did something different for that.

Oh, I know. I thought maybe she'd be seen, and then she'd have to fight or die to escape, and it would go from there. I dunno how she would be goaded into actually entering the building, but I figured you'd think of something better then that idea anyway.

Krylo 01-05-2009 10:04 PM

Tested by Fear, Forged in Battle, Quenched in BloodThen again, maybe I should just see what these things are. I'll be better off that way if I run into them in the wild.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot244.png

I set off toward the North, wondering if this is really such a good idea.

Things weren't looking any better as I moved. The world was still dead, roads and homes cracked and destroyed by nuclear devastation... a complete wasteland. I may never understand why my father left the vault for this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot338.png

The most promising thing I've seen so far is a town on the edge of extinction and a bridge that seems to still be standing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot245.png

Over a camp with more people... and what looks like a working boat? I almost decide to check on it, but I notice they're dressed just like the ones who tried to murder me on sight earlier. I quickly decide I'd be better off just sneaking away.

The trip through the wasteland drags on, and I almost forget where I'm heading as I travel past the endless death. I'm pulled out of my thoughts as I hear the sound of a growl coming from behind me. I spin around pulling my gun.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot250.png

Fuck!

I stumble back in surprise, pulling the trigger. I'm certain at least a couple of bullets hit the half decaying dog, but it doesn't slow down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot252.png

I backpeddle continuing to fire until first one, and then the other dog lays dead on the ground.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot253.png

It's starting to get a bit dark now, but I decide that making camp out here would be suicide. I decide to travel forward until I can find some kind of structure to hide in, at least.

A storm is blowing in by the time I find anything, and I have a feeling it's the police station the people back in Big Town were talking about.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot255.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot256.png

The place is fortified all to hell. If I'm lucky it'll be some remnant of the military camping here instead of mutants. Maybe I'll finally find a safe place to stay out in this hell hole.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot258.png

Shit! What the fuck is tha...

I hear a sound behind me and turn my head before I can finish my thought.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot259.png

I feel pain as the club smashes into the side of my head.

And then I don't feel anything at all.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot260.png

Urrrgh...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot261.png

I let out a groan as I regain consciousness... at least it's dark.

"Hey! You alive over there?" it's a female voice calling from the darkness.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot262.png

"Urrgh... y.. yeah..." I call back as I pull myself to my feet, glancing around my surroundings. My head's throbbing, and as I reach up I can feel a little blood on the side of my face. I'm alive, though, so it can't be all that bad.

"Good!" She sounds happy, excited, but her voice comes back down quickly as she continues, "Though... I guess you might have been better off if they had killed you."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot265.png

It's about now that I realize I'm standing in a cell. A jail cell. This must be the prison. And she must be... what did they say her name was? It doesn't matter I guess.

"Why... would I be better off dead?" I ask back as I lean against the wall, letting the pounding in my head slowly beat away to a low throb.

Her voice sounds... broken. Weak. Like she'd be crying if she had any tears left. "I... I don't know what they did to them... I just know they drag them away... and then... and then the screams... they last for hours... and then... nothing. They... they took Shorty away shortly before you woke up, but I haven't heard the screams yet. You'll understand soon..."

I shudder and check to see what I still have on me. They took my gun, obviously, but they don't seem to have found my grenades. Not that they'll be helpful here. And... my bobby pins. They left those and my trusty screwdriver.

Maybe if I'm lucky...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot266.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot268.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot267.png

Bingo.

My first act was moving to let out my fellow prisoner, but as I pulled out my screwdriver and bobby pins a voice came from in the hallway.

"Hide," she hisses between her teeth, "and get out of here if you can. Don't worry about it."

I nod and scurry into the shadows of a nearby corner as quickly as I can.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot272.png

Thundering footsteps move closer, and I can see the barrel of a gun poking through the door way for long minutes that seem to move into hours, before the footsteps begin moving away, and finally fade into nothing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot273.png

I move into the hallway cautiously. My heart feels like it's going to jump out of my chest, and I'm sure those creatures can hear it as I sneak along the corridors, trying to find a way out. Any way out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot275.png

Land mines... if I could just...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot343.png

Yes!

I quickly stuff the landmine into my jumpsuit, figuring this is the kind of thing that just might save my life if they notice me. I hear someone coming and quickly scurry out of the room, moving through the corridors as silently as possible.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot276.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot277.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot279.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot280.png

No exit... but I find another land mine which I quickly disarm and steal away.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot281.png

Everything's silent. I start to feel a little safe... until I look toward the door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot282.png

Shit shit shit!

I toss a landmine down and back out as a bullet embeds itself in the wall behind me.

Fuck.

I duck around the wall and watch as he plods through the room.

Just a few more steps... And then he steps on it. The explosion follows.

YES!

...

The smoke clears and...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot284.png

FUUUUCK!

I turn and run, dashing into a supply closet and closing the door behind me as I crouch down in the corner, praying silently that he doesn't find me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot287.png

"Where arrrre yooooouuu!"

"HAHA You're right here! Or HERE!"

"STOP HIDING!"

I can hear him as he searches for me. He's not far away now.

The door opens trapping me in the corner, I can see his arm through the broken glass for a moment. My body begins to tremble and it takes a conscious act of will to stop it. To stop myself from sobbing in terror. I'm going to die. I know I'm going to die.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot288.png

After a moment the door closes again and his footsteps trail away. I let loose a breath I didn't realize I had been holding.

I open the door as quietly as possible and move back into the corridors, hoping to find a way out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot278.png

I stumble, knocking a few pieces of rubble down, and I hear a shout.

"I CAN HEAR YOU!" The sound of a deep terrible laughter follows. My blood freezes as the sound of thundering footsteps come straight toward me and I scramble into a nearby room as quickly as possible.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot289.png

A bathroom.

I throw myself into one of the stalls and hope he walks past.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot290.png

He doesn't.

He laughs once more as he lowers his gun toward me, but I don't really hear it. My fear drives me, no longer paralyzing, as my instincts kick in. Like a cornered rat, I fight. I don't expect to live, but still I fight.

Leaping forward I grab his gun, managing to move myself away from the barrel before it fires as I sink my teeth into his arm, across one of the burn marks from the earlier land mine.

He screams and throws me backwards into the toilet, shattering it. I don't feel anything except the sharp piece of of broken porcelain in my hands as I drive forward again. I don't know what I'm doing, but I can feel the blood. See the gouges across his face. Feel his arms beating into me, but I'm in a death lock now, driving the shard of porcelain into his face again and again, even as it cuts through the flesh of my own hand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot291.png

I don't know how long it lasts, but when it's over I'm barely standing... he isn't.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot292.png

His rifle is at my feet, and a quick search of his body reveals a few more rounds.

I heft it and limp from the room, barely moving.

Another mutant. I'm too tired, too injured to run.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot301.png

The bullet tears through its arm, and the gun he had been holding falls to the floor. Whether from surprise or pain, I can't be sure. All I can be sure of is that he needs to die before he reaches me.

I slide another bullet into the chamber and fire again.

And again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot303.png

He falls dead.

I check his body and the area around it. A chinese assault rifle. Nice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot304.png

And the key to the jail cells.

Someone's going to love me.

The cells aren't far away. In fact, it seems like I've gone full circle as they're about two steps away.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot305.png

"Hey, are you alright?" she asks as I unlock the door to her cell.

I don't answer her, just tossing her the hunting rifle from the last mutant and a few rounds of ammo. "Let's just get the hell out of here."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot312.png

"You don't have to tell me twice."

The corridors are about the same as before, but quieter now. Maybe those were the only two mutants?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot313.png

I notice a trail of blood on the floor and follow it. It either leads to wherever they've been killing people, or it leads out. I'm hoping for the latter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot315.png

I'm starting to believe the former. Either way I don't have any better idea of where to go, and my companion isn't saying anything one way or the other.

It occurs to me we still haven't heard any screams.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot316.png

I come around the corner and enter the next floor. It doesn't seem too much diff...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot317.png

I fall to my knees as I struggle to keep the contents of my stomach in place. I manage to succeed, but judging by the sounds behind me, the lady in red isn't having as much luck.

Lady in red? Oh yeah, that's her name. Red.

Weird thought to have as staring at organs an... oh god.

I quickly turn away and notice some kind of storage area and a first aid kit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot318.png

Riffling through the boxes and cabinet I find my old pistol, which I quickly shove into my belt, some ammo, and some medical supplies. All of which I help myself to.

"You're going to eat me, aren't you!"

Voices.

I follow them silently.

"Sooo hungry..."

"You've got plenty of limbs right over there, why not eat them!?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot320.png

"Not fresh... not warm..."

"I hope you choke on my bones!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot321.png

"Not on YOUR bones, little man!" That same sickening laughter from before. I'm not sure if I'm more afraid or angry now, but I know that thing has to die.

"WHO'RE YOU CALLIN' LITTLE!?"

I pull the trigger.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot323.png

I don't let go.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot324.png

Red moves in to look at the body.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot325.png

I try not to concentrate on the bags of body parts littering the room as I walk over to Shorty.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot326.png

I tell him Red's here as I untie his arms.

"Let's go."

He nods and grabs the mutant's rifle before following me out the door. I still don't know where the hell I'm going, but I noticed a locked door

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot328.png

I easily jimmy the lock hoping it's the way out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot330.png

It's not the way out, but I don't think I can complain right now.

I search around the rest of the room hoping to find some ammo for my new hand held nuke launcher, but all I manage to get my hands on is another hunting rifle and some ammo.

Not that I'm complaining.

It's about then that Shorty speaks up.

"Hey, this is the basement. The way out should be up stairs, you know, if you plan on leavin'. Just seems like a good idea to me."

I look over at Red and she looks down. I make a mental note to mention something about maybe telling me I'm walking into potential death instead of the way out after we get back to town. Probably not a good idea to say anything with Shorty here, though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot334.png

I make my way to the stairs and hobble up, the weight of the fat man wearing on my injured body. I hand it to Red and ask her to carry it for me. She just nods and does so. It seems a little heavy for her too, but fuck if I care.

The whole place seems a lot easier to navigate now that I'm not running for fear from super mutants, and it doesn't take long to find a door leading out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot335.png

I've never felt so happy to see the total devastation of the wasteland. Well I've never been happy to see it at all before now, really, but that's beside the point.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot336.png

If I never see another super mutant, it will be too damn soon.

TDK 01-05-2009 10:46 PM

Do you really get thrown in a cell if you get your ass kicked by a super mutant there?

Krylo 01-05-2009 10:54 PM

No. You die.

I had to use console to turn off clipping and sneak into the jail cell in order to pull all that off. There were other difficulties as well, which resulted in multiple reloads. Namely that the mutants really enjoyed wandering into the prison and killing Red for no reason. It wasn't until later that I realized I could have just used the console to revive her.

Oh, yeah, by the way:

Arefu or Scrapyard, or someplace entirely different, next?

Obviously I'll go back to Big Town first, but I don't think that's going to be a full post.

Also: Stick around to help with the midnight attack or get out of town asap.

Solid Snake 01-05-2009 11:04 PM

I'm just going to keep voting Arefu until we actually get there. =)

Fenris 01-05-2009 11:04 PM

Krylo, reading that passage made my hand hurt.

Mr.Bookworm 01-05-2009 11:24 PM

Stick around, and then head to the junkyard.

Dogmeat. Best videogame animal companion ever? Discuss.

Aerozord 01-05-2009 11:54 PM

arefu for me,

and stay the attack comes at midnight? when I played it took place almost immediately after I got back, though that might just be timing. Incidently if you do stay toss down some frag mines on the bridge. Something satisfying about watching the mutants run over them

DFM 01-06-2009 12:00 AM

Vote to stay and help the town since we're kind of running on zero allies at the moment. I don't care where else we go.

Also Lucy's a badass.

Marelo 01-06-2009 12:01 AM

Stay. Loot for bottlecaps!

Wigmund 01-06-2009 12:48 AM

Stay and fight off the Mutie attack on Big Town, then head to Paradise Falls. I guess stopping by Arefu wouldn't hurt either.

Mirai Gen 01-06-2009 01:44 AM

Wow I was reading that and was like, wait, what? That totally doesn't happen.

Made for good storytelling.

Krylo 01-06-2009 01:46 AM

Made for an interesting play, killing two super mutants with one bar of health left, too... after killing one with my bare hands.

Mirai Gen 01-06-2009 01:51 AM

Surprisingly worked really well, considering I had figured A - you would have died instantly and B - the only way I saw you take two Super Muties yourself was with some pretty crazy tactics.

Either you told the story really carefully or berserking unarmed fits Lucy well. Maybe both.

Solid Snake 01-06-2009 02:39 AM

Yeah, there's definitely a level of skill entailed in beating up those muties at Level 2 that I simply seriously lack. I know it wasn't until around Level Six that I began to find muties remotely manageable with guns. Then again, I played a small guns character with next to no explosives, unarmed or melee skills.

though if you know the truth about the super mutants it makes sense

MasterOfMagic 01-06-2009 04:43 AM

*claps* Wow, you did a good job with that one.

I'd say with Lucy's leaning towards evilness, she should probably just get the fuck out of there after that experience. Aerfu seems like an alright idea, its more west than north from Big Town.

Telephalsion 01-06-2009 01:03 PM

If I had just been on the verge of being possibly eaten by mutants, I'd savour the chance to rest in a "safe" place. Now if that safe place is assaulted by mutants, then, what are you gonna do?

Stay and fight, then head towards Arefu I suppose.

Khael! 01-06-2009 01:03 PM

Arefu or the junkyard seem reasonable. As far as I can tell, Lucy's already done what the town asked her to do. I'd rather not stay the night with them.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 01-06-2009 05:05 PM

Going to Arefu leads to a quest you can't actually complete without first speaking to the other Lucy in Megaton, because the whole quest to save Arefu is directly linked to saving her brother, so there's no point heading there yet. Even if we can do the quest, it's all talk and no action, which is boring.

I still say Scrapyard first; we can pick up Dogmeat and then wander north into Minefield and be accosted by a deranged sniper. Good times will be had by all.

Also heading that way brings us ever closer to stumbling over the crashed alien ship....

Eltargrim 01-06-2009 05:26 PM

Actually, I think you can complete Arefu with a high enough speech skill. Not 100% certain you don't need the letter first, but you don't actually have to mention the letter to complete it.

Mirai Gen 01-06-2009 06:05 PM

The letter only sends you to Arefu, Lucy West almost has nothing to do with the quest. You don't even have to return to her for experience if I'm not mistaken.

EVILNess 01-06-2009 06:10 PM

If I am not mistaken, you can give the letter to her brother and tell her you delivered it though. You can't tell her her parents are dead though.

Incidentally, she doesn't pay you what she said she would.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 01-06-2009 06:34 PM

You can tell her her parents are dead if you start the quest in Arefu. I did on my second go, but couldn't gain access to the Families inner sanctum without first returning to her and getting the letter (well, I could, but everyone except the guard tried to kill me. It was only by saying I had a letter from the guys sister that I was allowed inside).

Not sure if high speech can overcome this though.

Aerozord 01-06-2009 07:52 PM

well when I went there I used lady killer to get the password. Ultimately I think you just need to speek with the boy, but you might be able to get around that too, not sure, haven't been there

Fenris 01-10-2009 06:46 PM

So, next chapter?

Krylo 01-12-2009 12:49 AM

Gatling FeverWell, let's get the hell out of here then, shall we?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot344.png

The trek through the wastelands is mostly quiet. I can hear Red and Shorty talking between each other, but I don't really pay that much attention to it. I just keep my eyes on the wastes. I've yet to walk through them without SOMETHING going wrong, and with two more people traveling alongside, I doubt I'll have better luck this time.

But, the travels ARE quiet. Nothing seems to go wrong. That is until I reach the bridge from before.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot345.png

I remember the people camped down there so I turn and signal Red and shorty to keep down and quiet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot348.png

We move across the bridge carefully and silently, hoping to avoid trouble.

Gunfire.

I turn around.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot349.png

Where are they?

I hop down off the bridge to see the gunman aiming up at the bridge. I take careful aim and...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot351.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...hotdeadman.png

I love this gun.

I rush toward the encampment. I know I saw more than one before, and his friends must have heard the commotion.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot352.png

As they see me they pull up their weapons.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot353.png

I return fire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot354.png

My bullet tears his head clean off, decapitating him. Yesterday that would have probably made me ill. Now, however, I just smile lovingly at my gun.

I walk back to the corpses and free them of any valuables they might be carrying. Ammo, weapons. Whatever.

Rummage through the camp, as well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot357.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot358.png

Turns out I was wrong about the boat, by the by. It doesn't work anymore.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot364.png

Either way, I head back to Red and Shorty, and we head toward Big Town together. It's not much further.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot365.png

Home Sweet Home.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot366.png

"Yeah, hey, they said you were a doctor, you think you could patch me up a little?"

Her eyes widen a bit, and she nods quickly, "Oh... oh yeah. You got pretty beaten up, didn't you? I'm sorry, I was so scared I didn't really even think of it..."

"Yeah. It's fine. Just... take care of it, would you?"

She nods and brings me to her clinic, pulling out some bandages and painkillers, wrapping, and drugging, me up. I'm starting to feel better when she suggests I go and lay down at the common house across the street.

As I walk in I'm accosted by a young girl. Looks to be in her late teens, maybe. Probably about my age.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot368.png

I answer her civilly enough, trying to maybe make a new ally. "Hi. I'm Lucy."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot369.png

She... just keeps talking about fashion and how everyone thinks she's silly and how she likes the word like, so on and so forth. I'm about to deck her when I hear something outside and use it to excuse myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot370.png

You know, I said I'd be happy if I never saw another one of these things again, but I'm actually feeling pretty good about this. Sure it might knock me unconscious drag me back to its lair, and eat me alive in the most gruesome manner imaginable, but at least it's not going to talk to me about lipstick.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot371.png

I fire the sawed off shotgun right into the thing's head, turning it's face into a red goo, but it doesn't even slow down. I fall backwards, out of the way of it's swing as gun fire rings out around me.

I roll up onto my feet and come around behind it as it prepares to attack a bystander

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot373.png

Firing another shot into the back of its head finishs its life and it slumps to the ground, more slowly than I would like.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot374.png

Ejecting the shells from the chamber I spin around to another mutant preparing to charge. I quickly slam a few more shells in and flip my wrist snapping the shotgun closed as it comes at me with a sledge hammer.

It pulls back for the strike and I pull my trigger. Shotgun versus hammer. The way nature intended.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot377.png

Shotgun wins.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot378.png

I look back at the town, the mutant corpses littering the ground and decide to get the hell out. To hell with resting, and to hell with being these people's hero. I've done nothing but nearly die ever since I've been to this godforsaken hole in the ground. I'm out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot379.png

That looks like a good direction, why not?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot380.png

Fuck.

FUCK FUCK FUCK!

I'm taking aim before I even know what I'm doing, the cool lacquer of the shotgun's pommel against my sweaty palms.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot382.png

The gun flies from his blasted hands, and I feel a momentary elation, but he's not done yet. I pump my other chamber into him.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot384.png

Shit, it didn't even slow him down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot385.png

I backpeddle away firing at his legs hoping to slow him down, but it doesn't seem to phase him as he continues his charge. It becomes apparent that he's going to catch me and tear me apart, and I stop running, taking aim as he charges for one last shot. Either he dies, or I become lunch.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot386.png

Yes!

Super mutants--Zero. Lucy--honestly I've lost count. God, I hate those things.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot387.png

...But not too much. He was even nice enough to leave me a box of ammo. Now I just gotta find something to try this thing out on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot389.png

...Where's a one of those murdering assholes when you need one?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot390.png

Oh, there they are.

Gotta get a little closer to really get a feel for this, though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot395.png

HAHA! FUCK YEAH!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot397.png

Oooh, that looks like it hurt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot392.png

Hey, he had a friend.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot399.png

It would have been insensitive of me to let him die alone, don't you think?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot401.png

...Well that was fun.

And I feel pretty good about ridding the world of those two... though I'm a little worried by my lack of reaction to this. I know I should feel ill, disgusted... angry maybe, but I just can't help feeling anything but justified in killing those two.

Whatever. It's not as bad as the mutants, anyway. I'm getting out of here.

Still don't know where I'm going but not here sounds better than here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot407.png

Then again...

I head up the bridge right next to the slaughtered... creatures. Whatever they are.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot410.png

"Fuck!" I shield my eyes from the debris, screaming in shock, and a little bit of anger.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot411.png

...Great. More crazies.

So we're at Arefu. I'm going to guess you people want me to help out and go hunt down The Family, but once I find them... then what?

Kill them? Ally with them? Marry Vance and have his babies*?

*Last option not really an option.

Solid Snake 01-12-2009 01:13 AM

"Kill the family, take the shiskebab, and utilize it as an awesome weapon" is my preferred option, and Lucy could well be justified in slaying cannibals. I see it is an ideal potential "neutral-turning-evil" option for her as she could still justify it as a morally acceptable solution insofar as she views The Family as inhuman.

But I suspect others will want Lucy to be nice and learn the dark arts of the Family. Either's better than siding with Arefu, negotiating with the family and not indulging in some vampirism.

Khael! 01-12-2009 01:30 AM

I'm pretty sure food isn't an issue in this game, but the back of my head keeps telling me that she'd be friggin hungry out in the middle of nuclear nowhere.

I'm a little undecided about whether to befriend the family or kill them, but starvation might be a good motivator.

Hungry enough that she sides with cannibals? But yeah I vote leave the family alive. You could also justify it by them being the only group that hasn't shot at her or asked her to save them from super mutants so far.

Well okay no, not at this stage in Lucy's character development. But if she allies with them instead of killing them it's then a possibility left open for later down the road if forumites vote that way.

Krylo 01-12-2009 01:54 AM

To be honest, food's not actually hard to find. It's all over the wasteland. Like ALL over. To the point where you stop picking it up because you already have too much.

There was pork and beans on one of those shelves that I looted earlier, and probably some other food, too.

Khael! 01-12-2009 01:58 AM

Oh that was salvageable? Explains a lot.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 01-12-2009 02:19 AM

Not to mention the literally hundreds of stimpaks everywhere. But I don't even use food or stimpaks; I live on a diet of purified water, bloodpacks and cannabalism. I haven't touched another form of health restorer in well over 10 hours.

On this matter though I'm split; on the one hand, shishkebab (we absolutely must aquire this at all costs) so we could just kill them and steal it, but on the other, we can gain shish schematics from helping them anyway and we can also learn the hemophage (sp?) perk.

Also judging from how Krylo's been playing Lucy I doubt she'd really want to side with vampires anyway, or do anything that risks her life again, but she certainly may enjoy the ruthless killing that can ensue.

Meh, as long as we get a shish, schematics or otherwise, I'll be happy with whatever we do.

Solid Snake 01-12-2009 02:28 AM

If you let the Family live, though, don't you almost automatically gain positive karma?

I'm still of the impression that it would be awesome to have a paranoid, cannibal-hatin' Lucy dispatch some not-so-friendly "justice" on The Family the moment she realizes who they are and what they've done in the past. But my perspective is very much influenced by the necessity that Lucy use a shishkebab immediately. Also, don't we have enough Let's Plays going on starring neutral-leaning-evil women who drink blood? ;)

Krylo 01-12-2009 02:36 AM

You get the schematics AND the weapon for killing them. You also get a unique sword that's not the shishkebab. Looks like a chinese sword, but has a cooler name.

I really can't guarantee I'll use the shishkebab a lot, though, either way. It'll be used sure, but it's probably not going to be the go to weapon.

Mirai Gen 01-12-2009 02:47 AM

Honestly Lucy sounds like she's turning neutral and enjoying combat, not exactly 'evil.'

Leave the town alive and help them out for a return payment of caps. If they can't, fuck em.

Yeah but the Vampires Edge is crap. Shish is by far the best melee weapon in the game (yes, even better than the Deathclaw Gauntlet).

Nikose Tyris 01-12-2009 06:18 AM

I'm torn. I'd kill for Vance's Jacket alone.

But the perk for talking things out is a good arguement too.

Aerozord 01-12-2009 08:00 PM

you know we can negotiate now, kill later. Lucy doesn't seem like the type to make enemies needlessly. Keep in mind from her perspective every place has been under constant threat. I doubt she'd want to kill the non-violent owners of the first safe place she has found outside the vault.

Krylo 01-12-2009 10:54 PM

You do realize that Arefu is not run by The Family, right Aero?

Arefu is under attack by The Family.

So yeah, not exactly non-violent. And their place ain't exactly safe, either. What with the being full of cannibal mutants who are so crazed as to murder and devour their own parents.

Jus' sayin'.

Aerozord 01-12-2009 11:08 PM

Did they shoot at you when they first saw you? Did Arefu? I mean non-violent to you

Yes. Both of them.

Jus' sayin'.

Thought the only cannibal mutant in Arefu was Lucy's little bro, the guy you're supposed to 'rescue' from the Family. Lucy should kill off the Family, since they're vampires and they're 'attacking' Arefu - at least, to her point of view.
And the massacre of the Family and the resulting bad karma could lead Lucy further down the path of the dark side, so eventually she'll get a Regulator ambush.

Youwantmilliondollar?! 01-14-2009 02:04 AM

Kill the Family.

No real reason. I just hate the fucks.

Krylo 01-14-2009 02:10 AM

I'm on my stretch, which means no day off until probably monday. I don't know, I haven't checked.

Point is, I'll probably try to update before then, as that it's kind of a long time to wait. I may or may not succeed, but I will be working on it. This means further votes may or may not be counted, depending on how far in I am.

By my count killing is ahead, barely. So I'll be doing that, probably.

G.I.R. 01-14-2009 09:44 AM

I'd say... talk to them.. get the perk, because 20 HP per bloodpack is awesome, and then kill them all and let god sort them out. Then you get the schematics, a brand new shish AND Vance's sweet sweet jacket.

Now, I don't know about anyone else but I went down there and tried killing them all and releasing the boy, but some glitch cause it that after I killed enough Family members the people of Arefu became hostile to me! So I had to go to a previous save and try the "Talking" tactic. Which actually worked out since this character is a good guy.

But yeah... talk to them, get the boy out then slaughter the lot of them after you get the sweet perk. Then you can raid their supply stores too! Although... I think even it they're all dead it's still considered stealing so you'll rack up negative Karma... but hey, who knows. Go for it!!!

Solid Snake 01-14-2009 01:04 PM

I still think we should have one Let's Play going on here where the woman isn't drinking anyone's blood anytime soon. =)

This is exactly what I did. I APPROVE OF THIS PLAN!! With the added side of also killing off all of Arefu.

And yeah, you still get neg karma if you steal a dead persons stuff.

Also the perk is ridiculous from a story telling point of view.

"I'm going to teach you how to heal yourself by drinking blood!"

...Wait... what?

So yeah, probably not gonna get the perk, regardless of the killingness of vampires.

G.I.R. 01-15-2009 08:26 AM

Well then... get in nice with the fam, so it's easier to get the boy out. Then when she listens to their "Laws" and realizes what they are, she can go ape shit on them and slaughter them wholesale! That way you get the schematics and the shish and the sweet trench! Everyone's happy!

MasterOfMagic 01-15-2009 11:04 AM

They'd have to actually do something to her to make her want to kill them. Unless she's a serial killer, but I don't think anything has pointed to that.

I don't know, after listening to [spoilers], and understanding what they do because of them... I'm not really sure how much I want to say for the benefit of those whom haven't seen it firsthand, but I feel it's entirely possible.

The thought certainly occurred to my (wholly good) character multiple times, even though she didn't follow through in the end.

Aerozord 01-15-2009 01:30 PM

this also depends abit on diolog. You will notice that many conversation trees, they dont say exactly why they were isolated. Initially I didn't even realize they were cannibals

Yeah I didn't find out what made them outcasts til I talked to the shopkeeper. He made it pretty obvious what was wrong with them.

Spending the Holidays with the Family Pt. 1http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot411.png

"Get over here before they see you!" He waves his arm gesturing me over.

I decide that he isn't going to shoot me anymore and head over, though I keep my hand on my side arm.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot417.png

"Who the hell did you think I was?" I ask, with maybe just a little more anger than was entirely necessary.

He sighs a bit, "Sorry about that, really I am, but it's just... this goddamn gang. The Family they call themselves. Been patrollin' around here and harassin' us. Normally it's just a bunch of stupid bullshit, bustin' shit up, makin' lots of noise, scarin' people, you know, nothin' big but," he gestures wildly toward the bottom of the bridge, "They gone killed our Brahmin! That's goin' too far! They're our lifeblood out here in these wastes yanno!"

Gangs? Apparently assholes like Butch exist everywhere. At least their name isn't as stupid. Tunnel Snakes. Jesus...

"So if they're just a gang, why don't you just take them out?" I mean, he's obviously got some decent weaponry considering the dust cloud he blasted up in front of me.

"Nah, there's somethin... not right about them. I don't know, they're stronger than us and they got bigger guns. Got the weapons and the muscles. Why the hell don't they just take us out? What the hell do they want!? It's got me goddamn creeped out!"

"Yeah... well... I was just passing through so..."

"Hey, if you don't mind... I ain't heard from the Wests in awhile. They live in the house all the way to the back there, and I can't leave my watch. Could you maybe check on them? Tell 'em Evan King sent ya." He seems genuinely worried, and I figure, it's just a quick little walk.

"...Yeah. Why not?"

"Thanks a lot, miss... we're in a bad way out here, and I can't risk those hooligans gettin' at the citizens."

I just wave and continue into the town.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot419.png

...What a terrible place. And it's under attack... isn't there any place decent in these wastes?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot420.png

Sun's setting. Maybe I can find someplace to sleep... the wasteland is bad enough during the day. I don't want to see what it's like at night.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot421.png

Welp... this looks like the place.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot422.png

...And this explains why King hadn't heard from them in awhile...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot424.png

I can't tell what killed them, but I have trouble believing it was human. They're pretty messed up...

I turn the light on my Pipboy and take a closer look around...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot423.png

The Family.

...But... wounds like these, it looks like they were attacked by a wild animal or something. This... isn't good. Best let Evan know.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot425.png

I inform him that Mr. and Mrs. West are dead, AND that 'The Family' was written in their blood on the wall. I also mention that it looks like a wild animal tore them apart.

He goes pale. "Ah hell... they... attacked? But I've been watchin' this the whole time, and there ain't no bridge back there how'd they... Shit, you said Mr. and Mrs... you didn't see no kid there did you?"

"Um... no, just the two terribly mutilated corpses... why?" I ask, a bit confused by his sudden leap of logic.

"The boy! They had a son, and I seen him talkin' to the family down there... Ah hell, he was always such a nice boy too... he musta snuck them in somehow. God only knows what they're doin' with him now. Listen... I'm... I'm too old for this. Could you help me out... just find the boy and bring him back, and if you happen to kill some of those freaks along the way I ain't complainin'."

I look out over the wasteland for a few minutes thinking about all the things I've seen up until now. The terrible things that have made me so desensitized in two fucking days that I can look at what The Family did to the Wests without feeling even a little sick. Fuck it. I need someplace to sleep.

"Tell you what, you get me a bed and I'll bring you a couple of heads. Sound good?"

He looks a little surprised by that. "That's... that's it? Just like that?"

"Listen, I'm really tired. Don't test my giving nature, alright?"

He nods quickly and then thinks for a minute, "Well... ain't really no place to sleep 'round here... though I guess The Wests won't be needin' their place any time soon, and I doubt The Family's gonna try to kill 'em again..."

I just sigh heavily. "Yeah... great... thanks. Fuck it, I'm going to bed."

I don't listen to anything else he has to say as I turn back toward the murder scene.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot426.png

Then again... there is one more house, and Evan said he's not leaving the barricade...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot427.png

Nice place Mr. King...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot428.png

I decide to relive him of a little ammo while I'm here. Sure, it's not the most... moral thing to do, what with The Family and all, but I figure as that I agreed to hunt them down for him, it's the least he can do to give me a few bullets.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot429.png

...Even the bed is wonderful. Hope the old man doesn't walk in on me while I'm sleeping, god knows what the old crazy would do to a young thing like me... fuck it, I'm too tired to care, and I can be reasonably sure he's not gonna kill me at least.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot430.png

I wake up and head out. It's just after dawn and the wastland is positively hideous. God I hate my life. Whatever. Best get after the Family... where the hell would they be?

Maybe Evan would know?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot432.png

"Yeah, about that... any idea where I'd start lookin'?"

He thinks for a few minutes. "Well, it's pretty dark when they attack, but they usually seem ta come from the east someplace. There's a few places out there. The Outdoor Movie Theater... the old Baseball Field... and uh... the Mersetti Train Station, I guess. Don't really know where exactly. They're all somewhat to the east. Station's on the North Side of the river here, while the other two are down on the south."

Great. Well... the Theater and Field I've been to... so that gives me a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for, and more or less where it is. "That helps a lot..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot433.png

As I leave town I wonder why the hell I agreed to help them...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot434.png

Welp, over the river and through the woods, to the crazy murderers I go...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot435.png

What the fuck is that thing!?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot436.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot437.png

I fire my minigun into it, bullets chipping away at it like a jackhammer, but it barely seems to notice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot440.png

More bullets! ALL THE BULLETS!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot441.png

It finally dies. Jesus. What the fuck was it?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot438.png

I toss out the old ammo box and reload my nearly empty minigun. Odd that they call it that. It's pretty fucking huge, after all.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot439.png

I decide to check out the dock and find a medkit. Grab some stimpaks from it, and a few bandages. However, as I'm pocketing them I hear the dock boards creak behind me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk1.png

Goddamn, another one of them. My back's to the water, and they seem to be aquatic. Gonna have to stand my ground.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk2.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk3.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk4.png

I'm panting as it finally falls to the ground. I'm running low on ammo in this thing. I'd best g--

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk5.png

Shit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk6.png

Double shit. How many of these things are there? No time to think now. I start backpeddling and shooting. It's difficult to do with the weight of the gun, and its considerable kick. Thank god I spent so much time learning how to handle a rifle--gatling gun ain't the same, but without some basic understanding I'd probably be on my back being torn apart by these things.

The bullets rip through their carapaces, but not fast enough, and the whine of the spinning barrels turns into an offensive clicking noise.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk7.png

I turn to run while stripping myself from the harness as quickly as possible, letting it drop to the ground behind me, while I reach around to pull out that assault rifle from the police headquarters. . .

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk8.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extralurk9.png

One goes down, but it clicks empty, too. I toss it back on my back in the sling, and draw my side arm.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...xtralurk10.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...xtralurk11.png

I'm panting, and trembling as I stumble away. My breath is ragged and I just want to be away from there now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot443.png

After what feels like hours of wandering around I find something that seems pretty familiar. I must be just north of Big Town... but there's a train yard, and this does seem east.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot452.png

Hey, another human, and he's not dressed like one of those psychos. Ain't seen that in the wastelands before. Convenient too...

"Hey!" I shout while waving one hand, the other on my pistol, ready to pull it and blow his ass away if he was like every other crazy I've seen so far.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot453.png

He's not.

"Hey, how's it going?" he asks, leisurely. Apparently some people HAVE gotten used to this place.

"I'm alright," I respond half heartedly, "getting used to the wasteland..."

He looks me over an eye cocked, then smiles, in what I hope is recognition, "Ah yeah. Vault Dweller, eh? Didn't know there was any vaults left locked up, well, welcome to hell," he says taking a drag of his cigarette, "'course, even in hell we can always have a little fun, eh?"

I groan inwardly, resisting the urge to punch him, "Yeah... I've seen just a few too many unholy terrors the last two days to even think about anything like that... but um... is this the Mersetti Trainyard?"

He looks a little disappointed as he answers, "Yeah, this is it... why?"

"I'm hunting down a band of crazy killers."

He stops for a minute looking me over, and then laughs a bit. "Yeah, well, maybe it's best you turned me down. Radiation musta already gotten to your head. Well, good luck kid, you're gonna need it. I'm getting the hell outta here before those 'killers' of yours notice there's me."

With that he waves and walks away. Maybe he's right and I am crazy. Then again, I managed to blow apart quite a few super mutants, so maybe I'm not. Guess it doesn't really matter. Not like this hell hole of a world is any better than death.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot456.png

I turn back toward the train station imagining myself being torn apart by murderers. Strangely, the thought doesn't bother me as much as I feel it should.

"Whatever..."

I head in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...renShot457.png

Nice place. Great decor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot458.png

I decide I'd best proceed as quietly as possible.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot459.png

Well, someone lives down here, judging by the fires...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot460.png

And the traps.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extratrap1.png

A baby carriage?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extratrap2.png

Oh. Well. Guess I'd best get the hell away from that.

I feel the heat of the explosion on my back and turn around to check the devastation.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...extratrap3.png

. . .And so my nightmares for the next month have been decided.

After all that, I decide I'd better keep my eyes peeled. Can't risk turning on the light, though. Lot of good avoiding traps is going to do me if I get killed in a hail of gunfire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot461.png

An automatic pitching machine? Really? Clearly set up to shoot down the choke point created by the trains.

Amateur hour.

I grab a sharp rock and jam it into the bottom wheel, making sure it's wedged in good and tight. That oughta break it.

Good thing, too, as a second later I feel a pull on my ankle and hear its motor fry out behind me, as it tries to lob something at my back.

Need to be more careful.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot464.png

Well hello thar Mr. Tripwire. How are you this fine evening? Just wonderful you say? You certainly hope no one breaks you and causes some kind of awful trap to go off in their face? Well alright then Mr. Tripwire, I'll just step over you nice and carefully.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot468.png

Well shit, the traps are getting a bit more dangerous now, aren't they? Good thing I noticed that wire or I'd be meat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot469.png

I can hear a radio... must be getting close.

Spending the Holidays with the Family Pt. 2http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot470.png

SHIT! He must've h... wait, he's not shooting?

I need to get in there... see if the kid's there... find out about the murder, but he's got that gun trained on my head, and I don't want to start shooting yet. I don't know how many there are... though I find it hard to believe the people who did... what I saw... I can't believe they're not murdering me.

"It's, well, I'm looking for something really important, please, you've gotta let me by!" Shit, that's never gonna work.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot471.png

What the shit? It worked?

He continues, "If I were you, I'd speak to Vance. He's our leader. Likes to hang out on the Mezzanine watching over the common area. He can probably help you find whatever it is you're looking for."

I nod simply. "Thanks a lot... hey, who's The Family, anyway?" I ask, trying to sound innocent.

"We are a badass gang and we don't take shit from nobody. Don't like too many questions either, get in there before I change my mind."

I just nod quickly holstering my gun and raising my hands. "Right... thanks again! I'll be going now."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot473.png

As he goes to open the gate, though, I think that there was something odd the way he said 'badass gang'. I believe the part about not asking questions... but... something seems off, here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot474.png

This place is nicer than Evan's place, really... and he wasn't kidding about the ordinance, Judging by the assault rifle on that box. They've definately got guns.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot475.png

Well, let's meet the leader. I take a deep breath and open the door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot476.png

I walk down the 'hallway' as calmly as possible, trying not to look like I'm here to kill everyone or whatever.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot477.png

...They don't look like crazed killers. What the hell is going on here?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot478.png

A woman approaches me, got the same hair cut I do. Cute.

"If you got the money I got the time"

"...What?"

She smiles a bit... oddly. "Well, well. I'm surprised you don't know me. I'm Brianna... I... take care of the men around here. Well, unmarried ones anyway."

Well, they've got their official gang whore, anyway. I try not to look too disgusted, but I think she picks up on it.

I just thank god she doesn't say anything.

"So... taken care of any new guys lately? Maybe by the name of Ian?"

She thinks for a minute, "Oh yeah... Ian. He hasn't really joined our little family, so I haven't had time to... sink my teeth into him." Her smile is strange. Predatory, but not in a purely sexual way. It sends shivers down my spine, and she catches on again, letting out a laugh at my reaction. "Don't be such a stick in the mud, cutie... you gotta have fun out in the wasteland..."

"Um... yeah..." it wasn't the sex that bothered me, "But... about Ian?"

"Oh yeah, he your boyfriend or somethin'? You must be into some fun stuff to be datin' that kid." She gives me a once over, licking her lips one more time and sending another shiver down my spine, elliciting another lilting laugh from her. Thankfully, the sexuality leaves her voice when she finally answers my question, "Anyway, Vance has got him in lock down for the time being. We all had to do it. Let's us think on ourselves, you know... decide if we really wanna be part of this. No one's forced." She actually sounds somewhat... loving? But not in a sexual way. Like talking about a parent someone deeply respects. "You're going to have to talk to Vance if you want to see him."

"Thanks." I disengage myself from her as quickly as possible. I can feel her smile boring into my back. Jesus Christ, she was looking at me like she wanted to... EAT me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot479.png

I hope Vance isn't as goddamn creepy.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot480.png

That must be the man.

"Welcome to Mersetti, Human."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot481.png

I really don't like the way he said 'Human'. What... are these people?

"My people call me Vance. I lead this group of weary travelers and outcasts who need a home. And... to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"

"What... is this place?"

"What you see before you is the last bastion for the down trodden and..." I tune him out as he goes on and on about how wonderful this place is, beneath the sun-baked wastes blah blah... wait... what was that?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot482.png

...Holy shit. Guess this explains the traps on the way in... sure lead people to your doorstep but kill them before they get there. It's like ordering take out! But better because you don't have to actually order anything! Fuck.

My skin goes pale and it takes an act of will not to reach for my gun. They haven't gotten violent yet... but there's no doubt these are the people who killed Ian's family. Fuck, no wonder they were so mutilated. Fucking eaten alive, probably.

"Wh.. what?" I ask, stuttering slightly, hoping that I misheard. Misunderstood. Something.

"Humans call for our extermination or reform. Reforming implies something is wrong with us..."

Goddamn right there's something wrong with you. You fucking eat people. Fuck.

He's still talking, though. Still talking. Must not be hungry. Shit this explains the way that woman was looking at me, too. She DID want to eat me.

"I see my teachings as an improvement. A way to transcend our cannibalism."

"...Transcend?" I ask, my voice wavering a little bit.

"You are more accepting than most of your kind." Not really. I'm just scared shitless because you out number me and the only working weapon I've got is a goddamn pea shooter. "But, yes, transcend. You see, we no longer eat the flesh of humans. We merely drink their blood. What would that make us in your eyes."

Great. They just rip out people's throats and drink their blood! THAT'S A LOT BETTER, VANCE! WAY TO REASSURE ME YOU AREN'T PSYCHO KILLERS OR ANYTHING!

Fuck fuck fuck.

"I... don't know?"

"Then that is a mystery you will have to solve on your own. In ceremony..." He talks more. Lots more. I don't care. Something about each member having to recite some stupid laws. He wants me to go find out what they are or something. Fucking why? Is he goddamn toying with me?

I must look like a goddamn juicebox to these people and now he wants me to go find out about their laws? Fucking my head, that's all.

He walks away after his shpiel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot483.png

And his wife walks in. She seems like an alright sort. Maybe...

"You know Ian?" I ask, testing the waters.

She smiles a bit, "Yeah. Vance has him in meditation. Sorry, but he's gotta stay locked up."

I put on my best sad face before speaking, trying to make it as believable as possible. "Hey... I uh... I was his girlfriend," I decide to go with the lie Brianna thought up, "We were pretty serious before he disappeared, and I'd like to at least see him, you know? Make sure he's ok... make sure WE'RE still ok..." I sound so good I almost convince myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot485.png

...And I convinced her too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot487.png

Guess it's time to meet Ian... don't know how the hell to get out of here though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot488.png

He's an alright looking kid. Wouldn't have minded if the girlfriend thing hadn't been a lie.

"Eh? What do you want?" he asks as I enter.

"Evan sent me to find you..." I don't say 'after I found your parents brutally killed by the people out there.

He smiles a little bit at that. "Guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm sure he's pretty pissed right now."

I shake my head. "More worried than anything, really. You alright? They hurt you?"

"Hurt me? ...No... they haven't. They've been protecting me. They're even going to let me join their family if I want once I finish this meditation." He doesn't sound scared of them at all. Actually a little worshipful. Like they're his heroes or something.

"Ian they..." He looks up at me questioningly. "They killed your family Ian... I saw 'The Family' written in blood over their corpses."

Ian looks down shaking his head. "No... they didn't."

"But I..."

He looks back up cutting me off, "I killed them... I ... I've always had the urge. Back when my sister was around she helped me control it, but my parents? They... they never knew about it and I just couldn't help myself. I blacked out... attacked them... I don't know what happened... when I came to Vance had pulled me away from them, and then he and one of the other members drained their blood and wrote that there... don't you get it!? They protected me... protected me from killing my own parents... so that... so I could go back there if I wanted to."

Oh God... this kid... he's... all thoughts of him being cute leave my mind. This place... these people, they're all sick.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot489.png

I take a deep breath and walk to the door, mechanically almost. It swings closed, I hope it'll muffle the sounds.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot490.png

I say something flirtatious. It takes a few minutes but he smiles and starts walking toward the bed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot423.png

I can only think of what I saw... his family. He's not human. He's a monster. Some kind of monster.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot491.png

I pull the pistol free and take aim.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot492.png

Ian is no more. The gun shot echoes through the room, though. I'm almost certain they heard it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot494.png

I put down a few mines I liberated earlier in the hallway to Ian's room. Figure I can use it as a fall back point if they heard me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot495.png

They did. Someone's coming. Looks like Holly, Vance's wife.

I reach into my shirt, pulling out one of my grenades. These fuckers deserve nothing less.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot496.png

Plant it right at her feet. Should have killed her, but a hail of gunfire from the debris tells me I'm not that lucky.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot497.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot499.png

I run back to Ian's room, ducking bullets and leaping over my own landmines, before letting the door close. The gun fire stops and there's silence for a few moments.

I hold my breath. The waiting is awful. I know it's probably been under a minute but it feels like days. I'm trapped in this small room. What if they disarmed the landmines? What if she got the others and they're about to bust in?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight1.png

Then the blast throws the door open.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight2.png

I feel almost bad about it, she seemed like the best person out of all of them. But, she was still a blood drinker and she tried to kill me.

Besides, I can't feel too bad when that's a submachine gun there. My chances of survival just sky rocketed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight3.png

I head back into the hallway, and I hear a sound to my right.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight4.png

A grenade slides out of my jumpsuit with ease that feels almost unnatural, as I slide it into the door, while turning my face away for cover.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight5.png

I can feel the heat and pressure, though I'm far enough back that it's not painful. A few shards of shrapnel hit the rocks around me, and I make a mental note not to throw them so close anymore.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight6.png

I have to backpeddle out, though, drawing Holly's submachine gun, as Lance manages to pounce through the blast, his legs looking like ground beef. I open fire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight7.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight8.png

He was a tough son of a bitch, but now he's just more mess on the walls.

I help myself to his flaming sword, though I turn it off and slide the blade into a belt loop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../famfight9.png

Nobody else seems to be coming right away. I slink forward, and find no one else has come up. Maybe they couldn't hear from way down there? Doubtful. . . might be they just figured Vance and Holly were enough.

Either way. . .

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot500.png

I decide to place a land mine at the top of each stair before looking down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot501.png

They really seem oblivious.

Gives me time to line up a shot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot502.png

He barely even moves as the bullet smashes through his brain pan. If I couldn't see the gray matter across the table I'd think I had missed.

Regardless, bullets start to impact around me and I pull back before I can even see what's going on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot503.png

I hear a blast a few moments before I see a couple injured family members coming around shooting.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot504.png

I return fire, but I feel the sting of bullets tearing through my abdomen as I stumble backward, barely holding it together.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot505.png

I grit my teeth and draw Vance's sword as I cower around the corner, figuring I can get the drop on them when they come around.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...famfight10.png

I see one and come out with a swing. The blade's sharper than it looks and I feel the flesh of his throat give easily, even as I notice another standing next to him ready to fire.

I continue moving my blade along the same line, and it gashes through his arm and into his ribs. I place a foot on his chest and kick him off down the ramp as I roll back into cover, my arm and stomach taking AR fire as he shoots wildly in his death throes.

I smash against the wall and fumble for a stimpak. Blood is running in rivulets down my arm as I inject it into myself. The painkillers calm my nerves, and I pull out my hunting rifle.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot506.png

My arms are still shaking. They've got no strength left in them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot507.png

Explains why I only clipped her head instead of killing her flat out, when I roll out to take a shot.

I quickly roll back in to cover however, and drop the rifle, pulling out the SMG again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot508.png

The second she steps past the wall I pull the trigger.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot509.png

Not much left of her.

I take a moment to survey my work. Everyone dead, and riddled with bullets.

Well... except the guard... he might not have heard all that, though. Might be able to get the drop on him.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot511.png

I head back out, weapon drawn and ready to go.

Though I fully grasp the importance of stealth, right now. He has to die quickly if I'm going to live.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot512.png

He saw me again... opened fire... I opened back. A bullet slices through my cheek. Another rips through my naked stomach... but my aim was more true. I'm holding in my guts as I inject another stimpack.

I head back into the station. There's plenty of first aid here... enough to keep me alive, at least. Even find some, non-human meat, food. Some guns. All kinds of stuff. More stimpaks. As I bandage myself, allowing my wounds to heal I realize that King's not going to be happy with Ian's death.

Whatever. For now... I'm living here.

Lonely weeks pass. I would love to see someone else, but at least it's safe here. More time passes before I start to run out of food, and I realize I'm going to have to leave.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eenShot513.png

My wounds have healed... but I don't know where else to go. I just know I'll have to go somewhere, for food, at least. And... some company.

So now where?

greed 01-19-2009 06:14 AM

Tenpenny Tower. Dealing with Roy and Tenpenny should be fun.

Mr.Bookworm 01-19-2009 09:02 AM

Back to Arefu. You've at least got to try to explain to King about Ian.

But before you go, make sure you grab the assault rifles, swords, ammo, and all of the other stuff.

Solid Snake 01-19-2009 02:24 PM

So by killing Ian, we're hostile with Arefu now too?
Bummer. I as hoping there'd be a way we could stay buddies with the Arefu folks. Strange to think Arefu would shoot you on sight without even knowing what happened to Ian or the Family. (Why not just tell them Ian was an evil son of a bitch? They'd probably believe you.)

Anyway, I still think it's in character for Lucy to return to Arefu first, given it's one place she knows and given that she shouldn't know that Arefu would respond violently to her. I think it'd be a nice wakeup call...have Lucy expect to return to Arefu some sort of heroine for having stopped the cannibals, only to get shot at.

Long-term? Assuming Arefu doesn't take a whole update, that is. There's a fire ant quest involving a young'un in the outskirts of DC that should be easy to take on and actually complete at your current level. I forget the name of the quest, but it's not that difficult and results in you getting a chance to "buff" your character with a permanent boost to a single SPECIAL statistic. I think it's the next place to go. Having done something terribly "evil" just now, Lucy could benefit from a more...positive experience.

EDIT: Actually, I think it's impossible for Ian not no turn hostile the moment you start shooting at The Family unless you have his sister's letter. So we damned ourselves to hostility with Arefu by deciding not to go to Megaton first. At any rate, my first playthrough, I was able to kill all the Family members, set Ian free, and then convince Ian that the Family were evil and that he should return home to Arefu. It required that letter, though. In that case, Arefu remains friendly.

Mirai Gen 01-19-2009 03:12 PM

On the bright side, now you have an arsenal of weaponry, which is one of the nicer things about being evil and killing the Family.

The quest is called "Those!" Exclamation is part of the name. I'm actually kind of surprised you didn't remember it with how hilariously silly the name is.

Lucy's lean towards the dark side starts to make sense with this encounter. Though, Krylo, when the Wastelander said 'have some fun' I didn't quite catch what he was referring to until I read it a second time.

I honestly want to see what she's going to say/do in the Megaton quest, so I say go there. Even if you end up killing everyone in Megaton and Tenpenny Tower you can use Miserti Station and The Family's headquarters as a base of ops.

Aerozord 01-19-2009 06:20 PM

I say head north. I wonder how Lucy will react to Paradice Falls, and assuming she has the caps she can get a companion

G.I.R. 01-20-2009 02:22 PM

Don't forget to grab Vance's coat and shiskebab! Oh.. and all the weapons and ammo their little store had. :D

Paradise Falls sounds like a good place to go from here. Although... something tells me when Lucy finds the slavers that she'll be inclined to murder the lot of them for their horrid practices.

And something tells me she won't take a liking to the Ghouls... She seems more likely to side with Tenpenny and kill the lot of them.

Aerozord 01-20-2009 02:43 PM

I am perfectly fine with her slaughtering the slavers, I'm guessing right after she finds out about the kids. Of course paradise falls has people with gattling guns. Krylo could probably handle it, but Lucy might think twice.

Also I think she is avoiding stripping the dead for clothing

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 01-20-2009 04:33 PM

Crashed spaceship! Go get the alien blaster! Then nothing will stand in our way!
