Worlds Ending: Sign-Up

In the distance, the Foghorn sounded.

“So, that means that some poor sod just got dropped out there, right?” Chester Hatfield asked.

His companion nodded.

For about the hundredth time that day, Chester found himself pondering the differences between himself and the man he was standing watch with. The man called himself Kenneth Geralid, and when pressed about his past, Ken claimed to be the leader of an elite squadron of dragon riders, from a world called Archana. Aside from the squadron leader thing, Chester found himself no longer surprised by the man’s claims.

On the other hand, Kenneth probably had the same doubts about him when he told his history…being from a world called Earth and part of a secret organization. Chester chose to keep the primary purpose of B.L.I.N.D. to himself…there were a number of non-humans running around, so claiming to be part of a pro-human shadow organization was probably a bad idea.

Chester looked behind him, at the source of the sound. Chester had been in this world for some time…but even now, the sheer size of the Lighthouse astounded him. The massive tower reached up from behind the horizon…the base of the structure was hidden by the curve of the planet they were on. He knew they had to be quite a ways away from the Lighthouse…but the building was clearly visible in spite of the distance. On the top, a light, bright enough to be seen clearly even during the day, blinked on and off as the turret of light rotated around.

“And it always makes that sound when someone gets dropped out there?” Chester asked.

“You should know,” Kenneth replied. “You heard it when you got here.”

“Yeah, but I was half-conscious at the time,” Chester muttered in reply. He back into the Wastes...the Wastes of Arrival, if you wanted the full, official name, but most everyone that Chester had met so far just called them the Wastes. It was the one thing that everyone had in common here. All of them woke up suddenly, out there. They traveled towards the Lighthouse, and that had lead them to the safety of the River…and to the town of Wayward.

“So, we just wait for them?” Chester asked.

Kenneth chuckled without humor. “I’ll be the first to say that I’m a little crazy. I would take my squadron into battle, outnumbered and outgunned, without thinking twice. But I am nowhere near crazy enough to go back out there and face the Horsemen again.”

Chester shuddered involuntarily, his own memories of the terrifying monsters that stalked the wastes returning to him. Like many others, he had tried to fight them…at first. But then, just like everyone else in who made it to Wayward, he had ended up running…running and scared.

“You think whoever is out there will make it?” Chester asked in a quiet voice.

Kenneth shrugged. “As long as they keep moving towards the Lighthouse…they usually do.”

The Foghorn sounded again. Chester didn’t even bother to look back. “Another bad day for someone,” he said quietly.

It’s the start of a new year, and as such, it is time for I, Toastburner B, to inflict another attempt at GMing an RP upon the unsuspecting forum.

Bypassing my usual method of having you, the people, vote for the RP for me to run, I have decided to pull an executive decision, and do one of my choosing. For those of you who have been have been paying attention, you know that this RP is called Worlds Ending.

For those of you who didn’t read the interest thread, I’ll give you the gist of what’s going on here:

The point of Worlds Ending is to give you, the player, a chance to play a character you didn’t get to complete an RP with. I figure there has to be quite a few out there, seeming as the majority of RPs around here don’t get finished.

I am, however, laying down some rules as to what character you can choose:

[2] Max of 2 characters from any one RP. First come, first serve. This is a looser rule...give a good reason and I'll allow more than 2. Remember: a good reason is something more than 'because I want to'.

[3] No "uber" characters. I'd like everyone to be basically about the same strength. If you have a character that you really, really, really want to use that might throw off the curve, I'd be willing to let you tone down the character to fit in with everyone else.

[4] Has to be a character from inactive RP...no characters from an RP that is still in progress.

[5] Limited to characters that took part in an RP: No rejected character concepts, no characters you created but never used.

[6] Character's as originally posted, please. The characters will be equipped with whatever they had in the RP they were in...so don't try to sneak a mini-gun into the inventory of a character in a medieval RP, or magic into the skills of a character from a sci-fi RP.

[7] As discussed in the Interest thread, I am open to the possibility of accepting characters from RPs outside of NPF. HOWEVER, I will be taking it on a case-by-case basis, and you will need to be able to link me to the character sheet and the RP that took place.

A little background:

As far as your character is concerned, one second, they were up and about, doing whatever it was they were doing, and the next, they woke up in the Wastes.

The Wastes of Arrival, or simply, the Wastes, are where everyone who is dropped into this world starts. They are awoken by the sound of the Foghorn, in the distance. The Wastes, as their name implies, are almost completely lifeless. The ground is covered in a fine, gray powder...whether it is dirt, ash, or dust is beside the point, really. The Wastes are mostly a plain, broken up only by small, rocky outcroppings or gently slopped hills. There is no food...no water. You're only hope of survival is to get out of the Wastes, with the Lighthouse being our beacon, if you choose to follow it.

The Lighthouse is a massive structure. It is so tall that the tower can be clearly seen from anywhere in the Wastes, despite the fact that the base of the Lighthouse is actually out of sight, behind the horizon. The light from the top of the tower is easily seen, even in the brightest hour of the day, even during the cloudiest nights. The Foghorn sounds whenever someone arrives in the wastes.

The only other living things inside the Wastes of the Horsemen. No one travels through the Wastes without encountering one of these creatures. They are swift, but seemingly mindless hunters. They're greatest weapon is fear...literal fear. They cause a near overwhelming fear in whoever or whatever they chase. It doesn't matter what world you can from, what species you are, what you fought in your old life...the Horsemen will inspire fear in you. As far as anyone can tell, they are, for all intents and purposes, invincible. No one has been able to so much as knock over one of the Horsemen, let alone kill one. You're only hope against these fiends is to try to loose them in the Wastes, or to cross the River.

The River is the first sign of life you see in this new world. The waters seperate the gray of the Wastes with the green of grass, and it seems as though nothing of the Wastes can cross the water...not even the Horsemen. Once you cross the river, you are safe. Along the river, there are camps set up to assist people who just escaped from the wastes. At these small camps, recent arrivals will find supplies for the short trip to Wayward.

Wayward: The Home of the Lost. Wayward is set on mass of land, protected on each side by the River, and appears to be the only place that can substain life on this world...at least, as far as anyone can see, it is. The town of Wayward itself looks much like a sprawling old west town, for the most part, and by and large, that is where the tech level is at. There are a handful of exceptions: for example, a steam generator provides the town with electricity, and a few of the houses have indoor plumbing...but by and large, the tech level is pretty low.

For those who come from modern or high tech worlds, they will be hard pressed to find ammo for their weapons...energy weapons especially. They can procure new, old-fashioned firearms, but for the most part, the ammo they have for their modern or high-tech weapons is all they will have for that weapon.

Magic users will find that the energies of his new world are a little different from their worlds. They can still use magic, but the spells will be less powerful, and harder to cast.

Yeah...I'm trying to level the playing field...sue me.

So, yeah...the sign-up sheet.

EDIT:

While I'm thinking about it, I'll mention this:

I know that, with my last RP, Devil Arms, I limited the number of players that could join. Well...that experiment failed miserably, so I'm going back to the tried and true style of accepting all comers and letting the pack thin itself out.

The only problem I'd see in playing Suzume is the fact that he runs off of demon souls, which may or may not be available to him. I figure it'll work itself out, but it's still a bit problematic.

((Since Arhra's gone, I picked a more generic sorceress type to play with. While spartan because she's an older character, I think I've improved it significantly since.))
