Fusion Fall is upon us - Jan 14

Is anybody brave enough to try the Cartoon Network MMORPG??

Quote:

Planet Fusion, ruled by the evil Fuse, has traveled throughout the galaxy for millennia, devastating countless planets and civilizations. Earth is its next stop. The player joins forces with the characters from various Cartoon Network series to repel this threat.

The game begins with the player character participating in Dexter's time traveling experiment. As Dexter starts up the machine, Dee Dee, Dexter's sister, sneaks in and messes with the controls. This causes a timejump error, sending the player much further into the future than Dexter intended, where they arrive in the midst of a war between the Fusions and Cartoon Network's characters. This section of the game serves as a tutorial, introducing the player to the controls and items in the game. After completing the tutorial, players are tasked with repairing Dexter's time machine to return to the present. Upon gaining four Nanos and completing a number of key missions, the time machine is considered fixed and the player can return to the present for the main portion of the game.

Characters from various original Cartoon Network shows appear in the game, redesigned in an anime style by Mario F. Piedra. In addition, small, miniaturized versions of Cartoon Network characters called Nanos are collected along the way and travel with players, providing powers and abilities to assist during missions. A manga prequel, co-written by Matthew Schwartz and Megas XLR co-creator George Krstic, entitled FusionFall: Worlds Collide!!, was passed out during Comic Con '07. Due to the overwhelming success of the manga, George Krstic is in talks to write a script for a FusionFall feature based on the manga to accompany the game's launch.[2]

I... must admit that I am curious. Cartoon Network has always been something of a soft spot for me.

I would consider trying it based on how free it is to play.

If it's somewhat less than free, then screw this stupid game. The character designs look retarded.

If it's free (or more?) then sure, I'll give it a go, but MMOs really aren't my thing... still, cartoon network, right?

I ain't getting near any game that has a Mankaiba in it.

The character designs are freaking nuts.

I don't want to play it with anime'd designs. I'd be more interested if they kept the original designs.

Yeah, but look at it this way: he really does look like a "Susan" now. :D

I haven't seen anything about a monthly (or otherwise) fee yet though, so come Wednesday I'll log on and try it out. And I'm fairly certain I'll lose interest within a day or two.

...The character creation bugs me. Is there not a single "normal" haircut? Because all I saw were Dragonball Z haircuts, an EBA design and some Sonic The Hedgehog human spikes. And the clothes... ugh. I think CN was trying a little to hard to be EXTREEEEME.

Marelo 01-12-2009 04:12 PM

Well, commercials on CN itself mention that you can play for free for a limited time, so I assume a cost will be introduced fairly soon after the release.

I played it fo free, forizzle, and I saw that it was "meh."

Character customization is the biggest draw, but what you can wear is dependant on your level, and while some stuff is cool looking to wear and unimportant, everything else you want to wear has stat stuff. So you have to choose between looking cool and kicking ass...

and even then that's stupid stupid stupid.

Combat is simple. Really, really simple. You point at a enemy, and click. Sword and Gun. Even if you're at a distance, you can usually make the hit, and so can your enemies (so don't think that by having a gun, you can shoot at your opponent from a safe distance). There is no real "strategy" in basic combat, if you're a solo just run in and get smacking furiously with enough healing items and Nanos, if you're a mob just go for the HORDE and beat the everliving carp out of a strange fire hydrant dog thing.

Strategy comes only from nanos, these cutesy smaller version of classic CN chars, who look like their normal selves, not like the teenage ones who act as NPCs in this game (look similar that one Power Puff Girls webcomic, which this game totally stole from!).

Once you get a nano, it has three abilities to choose from, usually an attack, a support skill (like faster running) or a quick use skill (a multiuse healing ability).

Nanos are essentially the leveling system, as once you defeat enough enemies and collect enough plot coins, you get a message stating that you're ready to enter a dungeon and fight a boss (usually an evil dupe of whomever your getting the nano for) and get your Nano.

They tie into your quest system too, and you are only allowed to have one Nano mission, one plot mission, and five sidequest style missions at a time.

Your level is based on how many Nano's you have, and your role in any party that bothers with strategy depends on which Nanos you have and with which abilities they have equipped. You can only have 3 Nanos equipped at once.

The main problem I see with the game, is that there is an impressive amount of stuff to do, but exploration and even quest taking is hindered by the fact there's so much to do. You can just try and do all the quests of your current level, only to be railroaded into going to a distant spot you've never been to yet to get Nano, and in your fight to get back to where you were earlier, you kill enough things to get yet another Nano somewhere even further out!

A nice bit is that the game dabbles in platforming, with characters having jumping abilities, zip lines, and obstacle courses as a part of the dungeon system, meaning you aren't just running around killing mobs all the time, and there's even a race feature to see who has the fastest time.

Now, I only played the christmas Beta, and presumably when it goes full there will be a bit more balance in progression, and more to wear (Girls have MUCH MUCH more to wear than boys when it comes to customization) but don't come expecting warcraft or whatever.

Also, make sure you mess with the settings, as it's a heavy duty browser game, best done with no other tabs or other internets stuff going on.

I have also played Quake Live, and it is Quake 3. That's about it.
