My computer is slow

At first I thought it was viral. But even after wiping the entire system it still was slow. Odd thing is, this is usually temporary and after about half an hour it runs fine. But let me clearify slow, I mean sudden lag spikes. This is also rather recent, and I dont have anymore stuff running then I did before the problems.

Every part of my computer is pretty new, besides the HDD, RAM and ROM-drives not a single componet hasn't been upgraded in the past year, even the power supply. I dont know what could be causing it

Does your hard drive spin up hard when you spike? What triggers the spikes?

Aerozord 01-16-2009 11:43 PM

Thats just it, it seems to be triggered by very minor things. Like clicking to minimize the web browser. Even then I'm not sure that triggers it or if trying to do something simply makes me aware of the spike.

That is odd... hmm. Make sure your anti-malware is up-to-date and run it, same with antivirus, check to see whats running in the background and what starts up with the computer. Sounds like you probably know all that, though. If it doesn't help, check your RAM and make sure it's properly seated and check all internal connections. That's very strange.

Do you use firefox? Because I've been noticing random lag spikes when I do silly things too, but only when I'm messing with firefox.

nope, IE. Well there are strange things running in the background, no clue where they are from as I got them when all I had on my computer was my anti-virus and IMing programs. I doubt they are good things but they aren't the cause. I stop those programs when I first start things up and they never suck up CPU or memory usage. When I bring up the task manager I often see "system" as taking up massive CPU use, I have seen it reach 50% multiple times

Sort your processes in alphabetical order. Look for repeats.

There's some really clever viruses and malware that can disguise itself as "csmss" in your Processes despite the fact that you already have one of those running.

Double check to make sure you aren't starting anything up that you don't want to - 'msconfig' in Run and check the Startup menu to see if things that you don't want are starting up with windows.

First and foremost, and really, this should have been the first thing asked/stated: What Operating System are you running?

How much RAM do you have? How big is the Swap file? What programs do you run at start-up? What programs are always running? Do you have anything that runs in the background, such as a scheduled disk defragmentation? Are you running torrents? Have you checked to make sure it isn't a bad driver (ie, make sure they're all compatible with your OS)?

I'll probably think of more questions later.

I've seen the same thing happen with system and other processes.
