The human skull

What's it made out of? What's it's normal size? Is it the strongest part of the body? What's the usual amount of force required to crack it?

...What? Just curious is all.

DarthZeth 04-19-2004 10:29 PM

plastic, 4, no, 25 foot-pounds of force.

Forever Zero 04-19-2004 10:39 PM

Sounds like Atma is trying to pawn off his Biology homework on us...

But the only two I can answer is the human skull is made of bone, and it isn't the strongest part of the human body.

Illuminatus 04-19-2004 10:42 PM

How much force? Step over here and we'll find out...

Krylo 04-19-2004 10:43 PM

Well... parts of it are really strong, not sure if they're THE strongest, but close anyway (that's why a head butt, when done correctly, doesn't hurt the person doing it)... and it sounds to ME like atma wants us to help him kill someone.

Actually, it isn't. It just suddenly dawned on me that I knew very little about the human skull, and I decided that was just inexcusable. And who better to ask then my good buddies at Nuklear Power Forums?

Furthermore, if the skull isn't the hardest part of the body, then what is?

Forever Zero 04-19-2004 10:58 PM

Oh, looks like I was wrong. Not the whole skull, just one part of it is the strongest. Ge here for where I found it: http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...0917.An.r.html

Interesting question, David. After confirming my first choice with some experts in skeletal anatomy, the title "strongest" bone in the body goes to one of the bones that make up your skull, called the temporal bone. It's the very dense, hard bone on the side of your head that surrounds the inner part of your ear.

its made up of a number of bone plates, that dont normaly regenerate themselves; which is why people have plates in thier skulls. also, when you're born, the bones havn't settled yet, and so you have that "soft spot" on the back of a baby's head where the bone hasnt protected yet.

and as Krylo said, parts of it are stronger than others. i know what our skulls are much thiner than they were a couple thousand years ago, especialy the back of our skulls which is probably the most vunlerable part of our bodies.

i also know, that under the bone, are layers of this...rubbery...plasticy...membrane that absorbs shocks and protects the brain meats. and i've heard stories of people getting shot in the head (forhead) and bullets being redirected around the skull instead of going straight through. i assume the bullets in question were .22 short rounds or something however.

DID YOU KNOW THAT:

Skulls can be squicked.

NOW YOU KNOW!

Klyco 04-20-2004 12:31 AM

We have a membrane around the skull known as Homeritus. Its like a foot ball helmut
