The Two Most Famous Video Game Icons Return For Another Olympic Competition

TOKYO (February 12, 2009) – SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co., Ltd today announced that two of the biggest video game heroes, Mario™ and Sonic™, will be coming together again, this time taking their rivalry to the snow and ice in another officially licensed Olympic-themed smash hit Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games™. Heading to stores late in 2009 on the Wii™ home video game system and Nintendo DS™, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will take players to Vancouver, Canada, host city of the official 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This gaming experience invites players of all ages and skill sets to face-off in some of the most intense winter competitions available for the Nintendo platforms.

Developed by SEGA of Japan, under the guidance of Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will take players to lifelike Olympic venues where they can choose from a legendary cast of playable characters, including new faces to the series to be revealed later this year. Following the phenomenal worldwide popularity of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, this fresh gaming experience will feature completely new Olympic Winter Games events from the official competition schedule including Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating with more events announced throughout the year.

Tailored to the specific system controls, Nintendo DS and Wii gamers will enjoy completely unique experiences thanks to each platform having its own specific gameplay features and modes. Players of all skill levels will enjoy the intuitive controls of both the Wii and Nintendo DS systems, in both single and multiplayer gaming modes. The Wii game will offer an even richer multiplayer experience offering co-op and competitive gameplay where the Nintendo DS brings an intense competitive element using the Nintendo DS wireless capabilities. Additionally, one of the new features to be found in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is the inclusion of the Wii Balance Board™ which can be used in some events featured in the Wii version, allowing for a more interactive and realistic gaming experience.

Published by SEGA® across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is again licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“We are extremely happy to again team up with Nintendo and ISM on what promises to be another global success.” says Naoya Tsurumi, CEO, SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “Sonic will partner with Mario once more beneath the spotlight of the legendary Olympic Games. Together they will face new athletic challenges that will provide gamers with more of the exciting experiences unique to this series.”

”SEGA has been a valued publishing partner of Nintendo for many years and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is the ultimate representation of that relationship,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO, Nintendo of America. “We look for this game to continue the tradition its predecessor started by bringing new events, new characters, and new gameplay experiences to fans worldwide.”

“To once again have Mario and Sonic and friends compete in Olympic sports and events in a winter setting is tremendously exciting for the Olympic Movement and the millions of gamers worldwide who enjoyed the characters’ previous match up”, says Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman & CEO of ISM.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will be in stores late 2009. For more information about the game, please visit www.sega.com or www.olympicvideogames.com. For any assets, please visit the SEGA FTP site at http://segapr.segaamerica.com.

The first game sold like a zettajillion copies, by the way.

The logo is inspired.

Again? *sigh* Seriously? How deeply have the Sonic fanboys/girls invaded, that there's now a burning need to have him in every goddamn Nintendo game out there? It was bad enough that they had to inject his vile presence into a previously-glorious franchise known as Super Smash Bros., but then they did the first Olympics game. Fine. Now again with the Sonic/Mario team/rivalry in yet another Olympics game?

What the fuck?

It's only a matter of time before we'll start seeing Sonic and Toe Jam & Earl guest starring in Zelda games. Then we'll have the joy of watching Zelda being attended by Amy, while Ganondorf, Rouge, and Shadow form some sort of unholy video-game Axis-of-Evil/Chicken-And-Wafflehouse in their nefarious scheme to take control of the Triforce. Rings shall be an alternate currency, replacing rupees and hearts alike, so that our heroes can face not merely dying, but being hump-mugged by the redeads for all eternity.

Or we could finally just take Sonic and Co. off their damned life-support. It's not like the franchise has been showing any noteworthy success for the past several years.

Technically, it is Mario who is invading the Sonic franchise. The game is developed and published by Sega; Nintendo only gets royalties.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games sold almost ten million copies across DS and Wii as of July of last year.

Yes. Mario & Sonic. As opposed to, say, Sonic Riders. Or Sonic's Schoolhouse. Or Sonic & Garfield Pack. Sonic & Knuckles Collection. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Sonic Heroes. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Sonic Superstars Tennis. Sonic Unleashed. Sonic Rush. Sonic Rivals. Sonic and the Secret Rings. Sonic and the Black Knight.

Etcetera... ad nauseum.

I'm merely stating that perhaps Nintendo could find a more worthy rival for it's characters through the sheer ingenuity of it's own designers, rather than propping up a decidedly squished foe.

But it takes all kinds. Carry on.

This is an outrage. I am going to complain about it on my LiveJournal.

From the looks of that picture there will be snowboarding goodness. And gods know I'm going to need something to remind me of how awesome snow is supposed to be.

I'd just like to mention that Sonic Riders, Sonic Rush, Sonic Battle, Sonic Rush: Adventure and the other Sonic Riders game all have sold well - they're not crazy successful, but not something that screwed themselves.

Sonic may not be as successful as he was in the 90s but, with the exceptions of Sonic 2006, possibly Unleashed and probably Sonic and the Black Knight, he is far from dead. It's weird how the "side" games are so much more successful than the "main" ones. I blame Sonic Team.

And geez, stop the hating.

I'd like to wait and see if they incorporate the Balance Board into the game.

Personally the first game is a good party game. It's not the greatest game around but when people are over we always have some fun with it.

Loyal 02-12-2009 11:49 AM

Jesus, HK, you're taking this way out of proportion.

First, there was nothing wrong with putting Sonic in Smash Bros - furthermore, any of the numerous complaints about the game have absolutely nothing to do with his inclusion.

Second, the first Olympics game was successful, and now they're making a sequel to it. This is no different from what many other gaming companies do. Lay off the haterade, bro.

[edit] Also, TJ and Earl were awesome, go away.

I even bolded it.

That font is entirely too small for that kind of truth.
