No Earthbound on Virtual Console... EVER.

That, combined with legal worries on behalf of Nintendo of America about pop culture references—including song samples from popular, litigation-happy artists—and an unwillingness to alter the game on the side of Nintendo of Japan, make for an unlikely release.

Earthbound (nee Mother 2) "was, and will continue to be, withheld due to legal issues" according to folks at Starmen.net.
I think I need a hug. : (

If the story is true, it would fall in line with how Nintendo of America has been acting for the last year or so. Homage and Parody fall under Fair Use, and using the Beatles as an excuse for not releasing it reeks of paranoia by NoA's lawyers.

Even so, NCL (Nintendo of Japan) still is at some fault. They should allow NoA to make the changes if they want to.

It's especially silly considering the parody of the Beatles is tenuous unless some Mother fan explained it to you.

I don't know what it is about NoA (not even necessarily about Mother) but damn son they're scaredycats.

I just can't help but feel that Nintendo's been letting me down of late, and that third party developers have been doing a much better job of making the Wii a worthwhile system. If I recall correctly, 2008 was the first year in a decade without a Zelda game, and it's not looking like we'll get one this year either. I mean, Twilight Princess was pretty fun, and Super Mario Galaxy is amazing. SSBB and Metroid Prime 3 were good games as well, but other than that, and I do admit my memory is hazy, it doesn't look like the Wii has gotten any decent first party games, and I don't think we'll be seeing any new ones for a while.

Their best original property without Mario, Link, or Donkey Kong...

One of, if not THE most popular person to have only one game within the US.

A chance to use him more as a fourth character who has a great game and reintroduce a franchise and what does NoA do?

They go and F--K it up for everyone...

Great job... -_-;

Punch-Out!! comes out during the first half of the year and Sin and Punishment 2 launches some time in 2009.

My speculation is that the reason for the drought last year has to do with titles being pushed back for MotionPlus implementation. We already know Zelda, Mario and Pikmin titles are in development, for example.

Now that I got that out of the way, I will say it does suck that it won't be released on the VC and I would like to try it on a console, but with the sue happy mindset of the owners and labels, you have to understand the position that Nintendo is in.

Granted why it never happened back in '94 is unknown.

I think it's funny reading the "comments" on the page. Obviously, for the most part they didn't play Mother 3 otherwise they'd know why it won't be released in NA

Kim 02-16-2009 10:07 PM

Oh, okay, then I don't have to be mad at Nintendo for anything but this then. Good to know.

Mirai Gen 02-16-2009 10:08 PM

Oh yeah, MotionPlus. "We didn't do it right the first time."

There's also the fact that this doesn't have anything to do with Mother.

Regulus Tera 02-16-2009 10:13 PM

I'm sorry that I tried to bring up some sort of optimism to NonCon's immediate future, DMD.

In any case, it does tie in that Nintendo of America is slowly becoming one of the most retarded branches in the history of any entertainment company. This and other recent decisions of them befuddle me as to why they, with Wii and DS numbers so high, don't try to push their systems more.
