MKV Video/Sub problem
So, I'm trying to watch an MKV file, but when I use Zoom Player or Media Player Classic, I don't get any video. When I try and watch it with Windows Media Player I get video, but no subs. Audio works fine on both. I tried uninstalling the Combined Community Codek Pack that had the two players, and reinstalling it, but that didn't fix things. Any suggestions?

I use VLC to watch those kind of files. You should give that a try.

Tried, seems to be working, thanks a ton!

Yeah, the Matroska(sp?) video format is like the bane of my existance. I'm not sure when people started putting stuff out in that format but I really wish they never would have. Hell, I don't even know what makes it more popular than your standard AVI file.

I think it's popular because it's easier to put soft subs on or something. Also, something about how they're container formats, and mkv can hold more kinds of streams.
Which is funny, because VLC struggles with soft subs. In fact, there is a notably loud population on our fine internet that will scream at you like you've killed their wife, only child, mother, grandmother, their dad who was already dead somehow, and spit on their cat for the very notion of daring to suggest VLC. I'm not one of those people. Glad you got this worked out. |
Oh don't get me wrong, I hate VLC just as much as the next guy. It's just the first (and only) thing I was given when I bitched about not being able to play MKV files and since it technically worked, I didn't bother finding anything else.

MKV is DIRECT rippage from DVDs, if I'm not mistaken, and uses the subtitles that came with the disc. This is why often the subtitles on some anime you get will be absurd.
I have always been able to play it in everything since I got the K-Lite codec pack, I think. |
I have the K-Light pack and my Windows Media Player chokes and dies on MKV files.

CCCP is great.
I use CCCP with WMP and have yet to come across a file format or individual file that gives me issue.

For people who just cannot get .mkv to work, one solution is to convert them to .avi with AVC. For anyone who does do this, I remind you to make sure the resolution on the input and output modes match.
The quality is a little bit lower on the output, but at least you can figure out what the heck people are saying. |
