Dreams

I totally copped this from Mike's sig, but whatevs.

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible." - T. E. Lawrence

So, tell me. What are your dreams? What makes you dangerous?

I dream to make games, at least in my free time. Regardless, I'm following my new dream of becoming a computer programmer (old one was to be a research pharmacist, but programming has made me happy in ways pharmacy never even brushed upon).

To put it this way, you could say I'm dangerous because I'm driven to find out and understand how it all works, so I've dinked in ROM hacking utilities, hex editors, and have done my own research on how to program things that I wanted to do, even adding features onto assignments just for the experience. It's all been relevant, of course. But I've had teachers ask me how I did things on occasion. XD

But yeah, I figure the day I stop learning is the day I draw my last, hopefully aged, breath. Hopefully that means I produce many years of good work.

I don't want to be a downer, but would any of us be here if we were the kind of dangerous dreamer whose dreams change the world? Wouldn't we be too busy gaining power and influence to hang out on a message board for a sprite comic? I mean, maybe if this were a message board about, I dunno, some sort of ideology or enterprise or something, it would be more believable, but I'm pretty sure that the next MLK or Socrates isn't here.

Unless we're going with the letter of the quote and not the intention ("What makes you dangerous?" sorta implies that isn't what we're doing), in which case some of us are chasing a dream. Not me, but some of us. Some of us like bluestarultor.

All the great geniuses and heroes of the world start by growing up in it and being dissatisfied with what they find. Would you not agree, at the very least, that this forum has more than a few malcontents?

My understanding is that the "danger" is meant in an ironic sense. It's not really dangerous to change the world, but many people see change itself as danger.

In short, quit being a downer!

In all fairness, the staying population of NPF is like, what? Pretty equally divided between computer geeks and writers/artists/other creative types? I'd say NPF is actually a pretty good resource for the people who frequent it.

My dream is to come up with ideas and spread them around where they may influence people who can realize them and make the world better for everyone.

I'm sure MLK and Socrates weren't being hardcore about their world-changing ideals 24/7. :D I mean, just because I come here doesn't mean that I can't be active in some kind of cause otherwise, such as cancer research.

And dreaming doesn't necessarily have to be changing the whole world, it can be something as small as fighting for ones ideals and standing up for what you think is right, or making a difference to at least one person. Plus the quote wasn't about changing the world, it was about making your dreams come true. Which means taking chances and not giving into the easy or certain route, which all of us are certainly capable of.

To elaborate, writers, artists, and other creative types are often the kind of people that have dreams and/or hold dreams in high regard, which would make this the ideal place for a thread in which people could discuss their goals and their hopes for the future.

If being a malcontent is all it takes to be a savior hero, then Fifth might just be a sarcastic Jesus.

My dream is to make it into the game industry, make some of my game ideas come true, and hopfully repair the Sonic franchise by reducing the number of sonic games to 1-2 every 3-4 years and produce great quality sonic games using a formula that we all know will work. (3D side scroller)
