the old #380 comic where Nale targets Haley?

Mirai Gen 04-10-2009 08:19 PM

The fiends that tempted V are the same ones that got mentioned/cameos earlier in the comic back all the way in the Azure City arc.

Masaki-kun 04-10-2009 09:01 PM

Aren't they three different types of fiends that usually wouldn't be in the same place? I mean, a succubus is what? A demon? A devil? And they're three kinds? I know there's something odd about that but I don't know the damn rules well enough to finger it.

Jagos 04-10-2009 09:37 PM

They already mentioned how they're part of the IFCC or whatever.

Thing is they're parts of different planes. So one is Chaotic Evil, one is Neutral Evil, one is Lawful Evil. Usually, they would get in each other's way or try to fight for supremacy in some form in those planes. To have them team up is a huge thing.

Masaki-kun 04-10-2009 10:12 PM

Which is why it confused me that Sabine, who's what? Lawful evil.. I think... is reporting to all three of them.

Mirai Gen 04-10-2009 10:13 PM

Or they could all just be separate devils/demons who are all from one plane who spun the big story so that V would feel like they really weren't trying to tempt him to fall from grace when that's exactly what they were doing.

I mean they have been watching the scenario for a while. The whole reason they set this thing up is so that way they could tempt and seduce as many of the 'heroes' in the story to the dark side so that the Gates and Snarl can fall to the side of evil? That's what I read into it.

Aerozord 04-10-2009 10:44 PM

they mentioned before that she was working for one of them, but he himself was a member in the group. Basically an obvious example of an alliance. My informants are your informants. And now that I think about it each of the souls, what little we know, could be chaotic/lawful/neutral evil.

This might have bigger implications though. She didn't report V, she reported the Snarl, meaning V was just a means to an end and they are probably pulling off a xantos gambit, and ultimately couldn't care less about the elf's soul

I'd probably feel slightly more comfortable tagging along with the 'Burlew-is-Fucking-Lazy' crowd if most of his critics were, in fact, accomplished webcomic artists (or equally accomplished in alternative creative fields.) When his staunchest critics are the types who are too lazy to even create a webcomic concept, period, it's kind of like the pot calling the kettle black, only the pot in this case is in barely serviceable condition yet nonetheless feels it necessary to remind a state-of-the-art kettle of its bland color scheme.

No offense to Mirai, he's far from the first to criticize Burlew on those grounds. And frankly, I have good reason to suspect Mirai has the potential to ultimately be more successful in the writing business than most of Burlew's other critics.

Personally, though? I think one reason why I'm so touchy in regards to the "Burlew is lazy" criticisms is that I actually prefer Burlew's 'when I feel like it' updating style in comparison to the forced daily or semi-daily schedule of a Dominic Deegan or even an 8 Bit Theater. The schedule forces writers to peddle out a new chapter even when they're out of ideas or suffering through massive writer's block; the result often materializes in lackluster or mediocre updates. (Dominic Deegan is probably a poor example as I consider the webcomic as a whole a titular example of trite mediocrity, but I consider 8BT and Least I Could Do great webcomics, yet have found some of their regularly scheduled updates dull, there's even been a few entire month-long arcs I've found sorely lacking.)

The tradeoff with OOTS is you're waiting a longer, indeterminate amount of time for a product that is (in my opinion, at least) consistently phenomenal in quality. OOTS still has the occasional dud of an update, but the ratio of hits to misses is far more exceptional than most other webcomics. I attribute at least part of that to Burlew's "laziness." Only I don't think Burlew delays his comics because he's lazy, per se; I think I'd compare Burlew most to the writers of LOST. Like Damon and Carlton, he has a general concept of where the story is going, but he fills in the specifics and fleshes out his plot twists and character development along the way. And sometimes, I bet Burlew struggles with writer's block; he'll finish an update only to realize that he has absolutely no clue where to send the story next. That's not indicative of poor planning, as it happens to every writer, even those with elaborate guidebooks at their perusal.

At moments where Burlew is legitimately stumped with a severe case of writer's block, he can respond in two ways. He can shovel out crappy updates and bland filler until he finds his groove again, or he can delay the next update and take his time to compose his thoughts. Personally, I vastly prefer the latter approach, which ensures a longer-term posterity for his work. He can try to satiate the eternally-hungry masses now, or he can keep focused on crafting a higher-quality masterpiece that will remain relevant later, long after OOTS is finished.

It ain't like the guy's Dresden Codak, after all.

Masaki-kun 04-10-2009 10:57 PM

I'll agree with that whole statement except for your assurance that Dominic Deegan is worse than Least I Can Do. The latter plays out like a power fantasy... But in the vein of not derailing us into an argument about that, and please, if you -like- LICD more than DD then please don't call me out on that,
I'm working on a webcomic of my own. Right now, my partner insists we delay everything forever until it's all perfect before we take a first step, but after that would it be better to update regularly as not to leave fans disappointed or frustrated, or take my time and risk that in order to release a superior product. My biggest fear is that with a lack of momentum we'll fall flat, as unlike Burlew I don't have fans dedicated enough to wait.
