Americans
 

So here's the deal: In my Government class, we watched this old episode of Oprah (Yeah I know, shut up) and it was all about what other countries thought of Americans, and it got me thinking. Now I've always been aware that most Americans can't find Afghanistan on a map, nor identify ANY of our major allies and trading parters. The only thing we care about is us. What I didn't know is that the rest of the world knew that as well. So I pose a question for all, American or not:

Are we inconsiderate? Should we care more about the world around us, or are we justified in being completely clueless? What do those of you in other countries think of America as a whole, as far as foreign policy and our individual knowledge goes?

I still cant believe some of the results they get on those surveys. how can you not be able to find some of these major contries on a map? It seems rediculous.

is it just us though? i havent heard of any studies, but i wonder if someone from say, belguim could find afghanistan or venezuela on a map.

lets take our opposite (no not france the french aren't bad it's the parisians that are bad) china and compare us
my point is that the chineese are more spoiled than us but they dont have hicks and liveless "religious people" so who is better

chinese are more spoiled? how are citizens of a 3rd world country more spoiled than us?

We arn't so much inconsiderate as much as ill informed. The media in the country does always do its job when it comes to international news. Also a general uninterest in international politics could have something to do with it. I have seen studies like that, but like Viper said, "but i wonder if someone from say, belguim could find afghanistan or venezuela on a map." It of course ultimately spawns from our lack of educational funding in this country.

The child laws are called birth control. That's their way of doing it. As far "They get whatever they want" let me dispel the illusion that an only child is always spoiled. Second, how the hell would you know about what China is like? They're poor. I mean that. They are an extremely poor and unstable country.

No China is 3rd world. Trust me.

2nd refers to communism

I do think other countries think of America as spoiled, but most of that is media.. They don't see the poor people living in the ghetto or whatever.. All they see is britney spears and Paris Hilton.. They are the people that represent our country.. When people of other countries try to learn about American culture, they turn to the tv or magazines. This means they get a messed up view of what our culture is really like..

America does have its problems, as every country. There are many people who don't know geography and couldn't pick out a country on a map. I doubt this is just America though. I'm sure people in China or wherever would have trouble picking out the same country. It's just people's ignorance of paying attention to whats going on in the world. That goes on everywhere, not just in America.
